In worshipping shiva how can you forget his shakti and consort –ma

gouri? That reminds me of a conversation I had heard as a child

between my grand mother and a maid servant at our place when they

were discussing the significance of the shakti. Whenever you take the

name of a male deity his consort or shakti is remembered first.

Therefore we always say radhe shyam, sita ram and gouri shankar. Such

a simple way of putting across such a deep truth!

Unlike her other form Kali where she transcends all rules and

definitions and takes up the position of the mother of the entire

universe including shiva the moment she steps on him, mother Gouri

embodies the ideal of hindu womanhood. There are no rules for Kali

worship and no restrictions. Even if you are a murdering thug she

embraces you as her child. But when it comes to Gouri – the giver of

saubhagya, as Her own extension in Her eyes as a woman willingly

adopt some virtues. And believe me, Her expectations are not low.

Otherwise most of the initial mantra jaap will go in the direction

that the virtues are hammered into you. So in Gouri worship, chastity

is must even if your husband is a jerk! But then She blesses with all

you can seek. Relationships among the family members be it parents

and children, siblings and of course between man and woman. If you

are not married you will get the right match for you, and if you are

having difficulties with conceiving you will be blessed with a child.

Just as women, men can worship Her for similar boons.

Dhyaan:

Shwete vrishe sama roorah

Shwetambar dharah shuchih

Mahaagouri shubham

Dadyaanmahaa deva pramod da

So now the mantra

Aum Hreem Shreem Hreem Gloum Gam Gouri Geem Swaahaa

Chant with a rudraksha mala. And keep a maha gouri yantra before you.

Chant 5 or 11 mala on a regular basis. Starting from sraavan Monday

or even Tuesday (mangala gouri).

Direction east or north. Clothes etc yellow. Offering water mixed

with a small amount of milk on any shivling on a regular basis is a

good idea-preferably early morning. You can visit the webdunia

website for the details of mangala gouri or savan somvar vrat.

.. But please do not be bogged down by details or procedure. Worship

by thought word and deed is a lot more important than the details.

And never forget the golden mantra in Shiv parvati worship—aum namah

shivaaya.

The more the better

I am sending a favourite picture of hers according to the dhyaan

mantra I have with me. So, obeisance to the one who has kept the

piety in the Hindu woman alive since thousands of years. And,

obeisance to the one who was victorious in her missions.

In hindu mythology. Sita suffered despite being true to her husband,

radha despite being full of love could not even marry the man she

adored. It was only Gouri who had all the things on her terms and

conditions.

As a bhajan goes:

Ram na daal paye aisi mala siya ko shyaam bhi de na paye radha praan

priya ko

Gouri ko hai daali shiv ne aisi var maala.

(the var mala that ram gave to sita was incomplete, nor was shyam

able to give it to the one who was dearer to him than life, yet shiv

in marrying gouri made them both complete— poor translation)

.. Indeed as a girlfriend of mine chuckled when I was at the receiving

end of sermons quoting:

He gouri shankaraardhangi yatha twam shankar priya

Tatha maam kuru kalyaani kaant kaanta sudurlubhaam.

She said:

He gouri, yatha twam, tatha ham!

I am sorry I had forgotten to mention a few important points in gouri

worship.

1) keep water before you in a copper or silver tumbler (lota) while

chanting. After the chanting drink the water and pour the rest in a

holy plant. If there is none around pour it in a floral or a fruit

bearing plant. Avoid pouring it into cactus. This is because devi

especially relates to jal tatwa.

2) light a ghee lamp during entire chant. If possible burn incense.

3) in all sadhanas pertaining to drawing any kind of wealth be it in

form of saubhagya or love or becoming a multimillionaire using rich

things is an added advantage.

Therefore if possible wear silk, place your devi yantra too on silk.

(but if this is not possibly –just use bright colors like yellow or

red) Use a wool aasan, offer flowers –preferably roses which are next

best things to lotus (which are never available), if not any other

red flowers will do. Ashtagandha, itra kumkum haldi sindoor akshat,

henna, chandan, mouli can all be offered. ascan be jewellery, rich

clothes or mangalsutra etc if you can afford them (--mentally??) Just

offer whatever you have else offer these things mentally to her. If

any of your powders collect on the yantra with clean hand remove it

and make place for more.

4) washing a yantra after the chanting has started is not allowed.

This can be done only on the first day before starting to chant.

5) as I said before the rules are chastity ideally in thought word

and deed, otherwise to whatever extent you could assimilate it in

you. Gods have to understand that we live in kaliyug, so are trying

our best. If you like to go around criticizing your husband then pray

to shiva. he will not mind one bit. But this rule is not for me.

I am just informing you because I have heard it this way. I would

rather chant a few thousand times more than forego the pleasure of

making some wise remarks where they are due.

Just a minor note: in removing tantra badha too, say while using

bagalamukhi or mrityunjaya or whatever, keep a water tumbler(copper)

before you and after the chant session drink it with the feeling that

all evil forces are being driven out of your body and life. this can

also be used as ameans of inviting positive forces into your astral

and physical body.
