Computer 'Crash' after 'Virus' attack!

Namaste,

For the first time in 8 years an attack by one (or more) virus

succeeded in infiltrating my computer, crippling and crashing it. It

is in hospital for diagnosis and treatment, I hope to recover soon.

Please bear with me for tardy responses/actions. I have limited

access at the local library, from where I am sending this message.

I wish to thank Madathilji for a glorious discussion of

pUrNamadaH .... mantra, and hope he will return with more of his

thoughts when he has some free time.

We now are ready to welcome Sri Ken Knight, to feast us on 'Maya

in the Vedas'. This topic is sure to extend beyond a month. Due to

some particular vulnerability in his health we shall need to give him

ample time to recuperate from periodic crises, and not tax him at all

with digressions.

Regards,

Sunder

Dear Sir,

I was passing by and felt compelled to reply. Advaita is tough to

understand, but, usual virus protection is not so.

You should consider yourself lucky that nothing happened during the

last eight years. Virus protection is pretty simple and

straightforward. Buy a 'Norton' kind of anti-virus software costing

may be US$50 (not sure the exact US$ amount) and install it on your

PC. Ensure that periodic updates are received from the vendor

(weekly basis usually). Make sure that automatic virus protection is

ON all the time. Once the software is installed, all these are

automatically taken care of, but it is good to be aware of them so

that we are in control.

The idea behind automatic protection is that, there is the vendor's

software that is continuouly running on the PC. It checks every data

going in and out and if there is a virus, it immediately sets an

alarm so that the user is aware.

Once a week, a full virus scan of the computer is to be performed

using the software, like periodic doctor checkups.

There is also the concept of 'Firewall', the home PC versions called

Personal-firewalls also are available at a reasonable cost US$50 or

so. This is also a good to have. Some versions have parental control

also.

On my PC, I have both of the above.

Part-2 : Prepare for such a thing happening for some reason or other

[virus attack, file coruption, physical damage, forgetting bootup

password (as it happened in my case) ]and keep backups etc in safe

place.

On my PC, I did not have this and lost all my data into the deep-

sleep of Maya.

Part-3: When PC is not in use, disconnect it from the network

(internet) and switch off as relevant.

My PC was switched off for more than a year :-)

Part-4: Do not open emails from people you do not know of.

Especially, do not open emails with ridiculous subject lines and/or

with large attachments.

Namaste to all /\

Raghava
