Pamban Swamigal, a great mystic and spiritualist

CHENNAI, MAY 11. The sufferings which people experience can be

due to various causes, common among them being the tendency to

tenaciously pursue the evil qualities like selfishness, greed,

passion, feud, anxiety to grab power and disobeying the rules of

conduct. Such persons are easily drawn in different directions by

worldly attractions, and they should try to gain peace by tracing

the source of real pleasure and taking efforts to follow the

scriptural commands and reaching the goal by reposing their total

faith in the Almighty.

In order to guide the ignorant and erring people and teach them

moral values and make them adhere to the Law of Virtue, now and

then spiritual leaders are born in this world. By their personal

conduct and expositions about the cultural traditions and

religion, they have explained to all how to face problems and get

their sufferings mitigated. Their emphasis was that heaven that

is described as far away can be brought near humanity by all

treading the path of justice, honesty and truth.

A great saint who passed away about 70 years ago has sung that

just as differences exist between the ocean and a pond, a

mountain and a molehill, an elephant and a swine, there is a big

gap between he behaviour of saintly men and intolerant and

ignoble human beings. But even the latter can be saved from the

rut and lifted up if they adopt the path of devotion, pleading

with God to shower His grace and excuse them. Pamban Swamigal, a

great mystic and spiritualist, by his mission of reformation,

taught men to cling to God's feet.

Explaining how the saint himself has contributed a work of six

songs containing the epitome of all his hymns, bringing out the

philosophy of Saivism and enabling devotees and disciples to make

an indepth study of at least these summaries, Sri C. V.

Sadanandam said in a lecture, that the first poem made it clear

that a devotee, along with his efforts and carrying out his

ordained duties should also crave for God's grace. In the second,

the Swami refers to the need for giving some form to Lord to

enable men to meditate on it.

Thirdly he should submit himself totally at His feet urging Him

to relieve him from rebirths. The fourth points out God's

readiness to come to his rescue when he regrets his mistake. The

last two mention the efficacy of chanting prayers to give him

strength to withstand tests. Men of sincerity should not fail to

take guidance from such God-men appearing in our midst at the

Lord's behest.
