Dear moderator: I am posting below a note for Srimati Vathsala Srinivasan.

Dear Srimati Vathsala:

The Alwars who initiated the Bhakti Movement took several genres from

ancient Tamil Sangham poetry and transformed what was essentially secular

into sacred instruments. The Thai Neeradal (or Amba Adal) you find in

Sangham texts like Paripadal becomes the Pavai Nonbu. However, unlike the

ancient Tamil girls who prayed for a good husband, the cowherdesses pray for

Krishna's Grace (kainkarya).

Again, the Kama worship was familiar to the ancient Tamils. For instance,

Jeevaka Chintamani has plenty to tell about a Kama temple and how a girl

went in to pray to Kama to grant her a good husband.

I guess Andal used this familiar idea but transformed the prayer into one

for gaining Krishna Himself.

Dear Bhagavatas:

What I have heard from Acharyas is that ANDAL was NOT praying to Kaama but

to "Saakshath Manmata Manmata:" who is none other than her KrishNa Himself!

She is unlike other girls who are after getting a good husband.

 

In fact, she says "maniDarkku PEchup paDil naan VaazhagillEn" -

"I will not live to marry a mere mortal man"

Dear Shri Swamin,

Please accept my pranams. That was an excellent way to interpret it. I was

taken aback a little wondering why would Shri Andal worship manmatan. Thanks

for the wonderful viewpoint. For those who are not familiar with that

reference, Shri Vyasa Bhagavan describes Shri Krishna Paramatma in

mahabharatha in the following verses:

 

Thaasamaashruda bhushourihi smayamaana mukhambhujaha

Peetambaratharashragvee saakshaath manmatha manmathaha

Dear Sir,

When we see those pasurams, she refers "Kamadeva" as a seperate entity othes

than Krishnaa as perumaaL himself and says "ennai (nee) vithikiRRiyE" to

kaamadeva. This does not seem to refer emperumaan as kamadeva.

apropos the mail from Smt.Vathsala Srinivasan and the note posted by Prema

Nandakumar, I am to draw their attention to my earlier posting on nacciyar

Dear Smt Prema,

Thanks for your answer.I agree that Kama worship has been there for decades and

all the poets from sangam times to kannadasan has sung about kama. But my

question is that why it is included in divya prabandam?Iam not questioning how

and why she sung on Kama but why nathamunigal has included those pasurams in

divyaprabandam?.
