Yes, Mani is correct. These mantrams which included Dwayam, Ashtakshari and

Charama Slokam should only be received from one's own acharyan and a

mantra-siddha purusha. Swami Desikan has authored a book called

YajnOpaveethadharanam which sets the kramams for BrahmOpadesham/Upanayanam.

Mukkur Lakshminarasimhachar was a proponnet of the value of the

NarasimhAshtup Mantram which very few purushas have had the parama-bhagyam

of being initiated into. The other example is Adivan SatakOpar, the founder

of Ahobila Matham.

For many devotees who are not able to receive the mantram, chanting of

Hayagriiva Stotram and KaamasikAstakam is reccomended by Swami Desikan.

Swamin,

Although i personally have not been initiated with

this mantram, but as far my limited knowledge is

concerned i think u will have to be initiated into

this matram through your acharyas or the appropriate

adhikaris.

The other beautiful aspect of it is it preserves the

acharya-sishya parampara.

Sri:

My suggestion would be to approach the prAkritam Parakala Swamy and request

the

upadEsham of the very sacred Sri Hayagriva Manthram. Actually, there is a

Hayagriva

ekAkshara (one letter-ed) mantram and there is a hayagriva anushTup mantram.

When

you do and if and when Sri Parakala Swamy does the upadEsham of these above

mantrams,

please also ensure that you have the appropriate anganyAsa and karanyAsam

details also in

order to do the mantra pArAyanam.

The 33rd Pontiff of Sri Parakala Matham, Srimad Abhinava Ranganatha

Brahmatantra

Swatantra Parakala Swamy is believed to have "woven" the above mantrams (I

am not

sure which one, or even both) in his composition, Sri Hayagriva Panjaram,

which is available

at Sri Parakala Matham home pages at www.parakalamatham.org (Under

Scriptures/Stotrams).

Reading the panjaram and from my good fortune of receiving the upadEsham of

both these mantrams,

I can recognize those mantrams in the Panjaram. The panjaram itself is very

moving by its own accord,

so I really recommend that to anyone who is drawn towards the arAdhanam of

Sri Laxmi Hayagriva.

Hi Malolan,

I apologize if I was in error. This is the first I have

heard of this text being extant. Can you give me details

of the edition you have, etc.? I don't think either Sri

Uttamur Viraraghavacharyar or Sri P.B. Annangaracharya,

the two who published Swami Desika's works in the last

century, printed this text. I would like to know how to

obtain it.

Thanks,

Mani

Dear Mani,

A few years back, the Vedanta Desika Research Center in Madras was very

active. Sri Anand informs me that it is sadly, no longer functional anymore.

Many vidwans affiliated to that organisation had all the manuscripts of

Swami Desikan, excluding some luptam ones like Nigama Parimalam, Oosal,

Yesal etc.

I will try to locate this book. You might want to email Sri Parankusa

Ramanujan who is the Aasthana Vidwan of Ahobila Matham in Bangalore at

rama for some details. He is on the Heritage Project of CDAC

and is an advisor in Madurantakam Sanskrit College.
