Guest guest Report post Posted November 6, 1999 I agree 100% with what you have to say.

My experience with practicing astanga vinyasa off and on over the last 12 years is that there is NO practice (sooner or later) without practicing with others. In a way, getting together with others that are practicing the astanga series is at least 90% of the practice.

I have the basic knowledge of how to do the yoga. But, the work won't get done unless I'm sharing the room with others doing the same thing. I know that not everyone is like that, but that's how it is for me.

That being so for myself (and I suspect, for most of us) I think sharing of experiences on how to organize astanga clubs for practice would be extremely useful information, being that yoga shalas aren't quite as common as 7-11s.

How to get a yoga club/shala going? What kind of places make for the best practice areas? Anyone found places to practice for free? How did you attract members?
Guest guest Report post Posted December 21, 1999 Hey Trayam and everybody,

Just joined and reviewed previous messages so thanks for your contributions.
I've been practicing on and off for the last year but started a "yoga practice space" in the gymnasium of the Boys & Girls Club where I work here in Victoria. If you're having trouble committing to regular practice this is a great way to ensure you're there. It's only been going a couple of months but 5 of us are attending regularly. At this stage the practice space is only open Tuesdays from 6:30am to 8:30am but I hope to add more days as interest grows.
There is no instruction but there's tons of space in a gym. At first I thought it wouldn't be hot enough but they leave the heat on overnight which is nice up here in the Great White North.
If you can't find a space to practice (I get tired of having work around my bedroom furniture) then I would suggest checking out local community centres and organizations for available space. Early mornings can be very unusable time for an agency so you may get away with no charge for a while until you can build up a group. We've got a mix of Iyengar and Ashtanga and there's been no fights so far so approach different instructors (maybe even Tai Chi or other compatible practices) in your area to see if there's interest in an open space to practice.
You can email at teamadv or reply through the club for more info about it, otherwise good luck.

Thanks again for all the interesting discussion.
