Guest guest
I have a question I have often wondered about reincarnation, and would like to know if there are any sanskrit writings which discuss this. In reincarnation, we normally think of time as linear. That our past lives are just that - in past history - and when/if we incarnate again it will be in the future history. But I have wondered if it's possible to reincarnate in the past? Of course this would involve something of entering into an alternate timeline I suppose. Are there any Vedic writings that speak about this possibility? or is reincarnation always in the linear time model?
nekozuki
Well, it's a possibility but I don't know of any Vedic writings that say it happens. After all, what happens in the past happened in the past. So it's difficult to say.
Guest guest
No, reincarnation is in the future only. The closest I have seen to your idea is from a work called navadwipa dham mahatmya written sometime in the 19th century, I think. In this work, there are stories of how chaitanya [~15th century], the bengali saint went back in time and talked to people from many centuries ago [12th century], told them about his future plans and also told them to keep the meeting a secret. But this is not exactly in line with your question. Cheers
Guest guest
Hahahaha, I have also thought of this idea, but I think the soul can only incarnate in the past only in alternate timelines.

Yes, it would definitely have to be in an alternate timeline, or else history would be changed. Which brings up the question of parallel universes and time continuums? Some quantum physicists have theorized this. Hmmm?

Yeah, and this correlates with the idea of many universes in Hinduism to some extent at least.
