  1. With the United Nations already under fire for the Oil-for-Food mega-scandal and other corruption, sensational allegations of rampant sexual exploitation and rape of young girls and women by the U.N.'s so-called "peacekeepers" and civilian staffers in the Congo is dragging the global body's reputation to an all-time low.

    </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

In a new report referring to the widespread sex scandal as "the U.N.'s Abu Ghraib," the London Times provides some specific examples, including:

    • A French U.N. logistics expert in the Congo shot pornographic videos in his home, in which he had converted his bedroom into a photo studio for videotaping his sexual abuse of young girls. When police raided his home, the man was allegedly about to rape a 12-year-old girl sent to him in a law enforcement sting operation. As the Times reported, a senior Congolese police officer confirmed the bed was surrounded by large mirrors on three sides, with a remote control camera on the fourth side.
    • U.N. officials are worried that the scandal, which already has netted 150 allegations of sex crimes by U.N. staffers, will explode if the pornographic videos and photos, now on sale in Congo, becoming public
"It would be a pretty big problem for the U.N. if these pictures come out," one senior official told the Times.
    • Two Russian pilots paid young girls with jars of mayonnaise and jam to have sex with them, the report adds.
    • U.N. "peacekeepers" from Morocco based in Kisangani – a secluded town on the Congo River – are notorious for impregnating local women and girls. In March, an international group probing the scandal found 82 women and girls had been made pregnant by Moroccan U.N. staffers and 59 others by Uruguayan staffers. One U.N. soldier accused of rape was apparently hidden in the barracks for a year.
Congo's Minister of Defense Maj.-Gen. Jean Pierre Ondekane told a top U.N. official that all U.N. "peacekeepers" in Kisangani would be remember for would be "for running after little girls," the Times reported.
    • And at least two U.N. officials – a Ukrainian and a Canadian – have been forced to leave the African nation after getting local women pregnant.

Most of the sexual abuse and exploitation, says the report, involves trading sex for money, food or jobs. However, some victims say they were raped, but later given food or money to make the incident appear to have been consensual – "rape disguised as prostitution."

Like I am going to place value on ANYTHING the UN says

Wow cutting and pasting can be fun

Please could we have a discussion about socialism. I am a socialist and an aspirant Vaishnav and have no Guru to mediate between these two positions. I know I cannot rely on my own conclusions in this regard but I've never met anyone who can convince me of any contradictions between these two apparently opposing doctrines.

Sounds to me like you don`t want to change your thinking.

  3. Wow take a few days of travel and miss this ?

I find it amazing how " socialism " is the cure to all Ills yet every time it has taken root the number of deaths is staggering. Then like all good socialists they use their greatist tool, revisionism and claim " That wasn`t real socialism "

No form of governing offers sanctuary to the world. So I would really quit focusing on the " workers Utopia " which will never happen and focus on god.

Type out their opinion? Whats to type? - 154 Israelias killed are 154 too many. Did those 154 souls go back to the spiritual world? They of course have to take birth again. What's the nonsense to present opinions?

This forum 'world review' is about facts and this activist with Gush Shalom has the facts

Whoa! calm down there  .

This forum is for discussion of world events,

    discussion :smash:

n 1: an extended communication (often interactive) dealing with some particular topic; "the book contains an excellent discussion of modal logic"; "his treatment of the race question is badly biased"

2: an exchange of views on some topic; "we had a good discussion"; "we had a word or two about it"

There is no point in responding to cut-and-pastes because they require no thought. Want to post a news story and your feelings about the story, you would get a response then.

Again you post an opinion piece, I could cut and paste several opinion pieces that state the direct opposite, instead I prefer to excersise my mind and discuss the events with my own words :eek3:

You claim that these Soldiers face rebirth and state it as a fact ? Do you know each one personally ?

Anyway, feel free to have an opinion, it is kind of nice to think for and express yourself

That is nice and all but I can't blame people for questioning why God allows people to die violently at a temple while worshipping Him . Seems like a natural question to come up especially when the Bhagavatam says over and over that Krsna always protects his devotees.

But they are protected, should I be so lucky as to leave at a time when I am joyfully celebrating the lord, when my mind is only on the lord.

For he is a part of My flock, and will forever be. Here, in My flock, he will feel no pain, and will be comforted as you cannot imagine.

That is my sort of protection ;)

It is not that I dont understand what your question is, but for me personally this shell I inhabit is just a shell. The protection I seek is the protection of my Soul. It is upsetting to read these things I do agree and I myself have asked why at times. At those times though I need to realize that my concern is being placed on an illusion of a material nature. Fell the pain, feel the sadness, but realize that those who died and were injured are part of a plan we simply can never comprehend.

  6.

Here's a question I have: Why didn't God protect them? Why does God let such things happen, especially when the people involved were celebrating Him?

It is not our place to question the actions of Krishna.

Here is a Christian parable I was mailed that after changing a few words may just answer your question.

"Tomorrow morning," the surgeon began, "I'll open up your heart..."

"You'll find Jesus there," the boy interrupted.

The surgeon looked up, annoyed "I'll cut your heart open," he continued, to see how much damage has been done..."

"But when you open up my heart, you'll find Jesus in there," said the boy.

The surgeon looked to the parents, who Sat quietly."When I see how much damage has been done, I'll sew your heart and chest back up, and I'll plan what to do next."

"But you'll find Jesus in my heart. The Bible says He lives there. The hymns all say He lives there. You'll find Him in my heart."

The surgeon had had enough. "I'll tell you what I'll find in your heart. I'll find damaged muscle, low blood supply, and weakened vessels. And I'll find out if I can make you well."

"You'll find Jesus there too. He lives there."

    The surgeon left.

The surgeon sat in his office, recording his notes from the surgery, "...damaged aorta, damaged pulmonary vein, widespread muscle degeneration. No hope for transplant, no hope for cure. Therapy: painkillers and bed rest. Prognosis:" here he paused, "death within one year." He stopped the recorder, but there was more to be said. "Why?" he asked aloud. "Why did You do this? You've put him here; You've put him in this pain; and You've cursed him to an early death. Why?"

The Lord answered and said, "The boy, My lamb, was not meant for your flock for long, for he is a part of My flock, and will forever be. Here, in My flock, he will feel no pain, and will be comforted as you cannot imagine. His parents will one day join him here, and they will know peace, and My flock will continue to grow."

The surgeon's tears were hot, but his anger was hotter. "You created that boy, and You created that heart. He'll be dead in months. Why?"

The Lord answered, "The boy, My lamb, shall return to My flock, for He has Done his duty: I did not put My lamb with your flock to lose him, but to retrieve another lost lamb."

The surgeon wept.. The surgeon sat beside the boy's bed; the boy's parents sat across from him. The boy awoke and whispered, "Did you cut open my heart?"

    "Yes," said the surgeon.

"What did you find?" asked the boy.

"I found Jesus there," said the surgeon.

    May the families find peace.

That article will have BDM and his clones yakking for 10 pages minimum...

Do you have an opinion or do you just accept any written word ? I would be interested to hear what you have seen for yourself, not just read someone elses pasted opinion. :smash:

As the 6am ceasefire takes effect... the real war begins

    Robert Fisk

The world will be forced to chose a side sooner or later. Hezbolla will continue to strike from population centers and Israel will continue to eat casualties. One thing I hate more than war itself is the notion in the world today of a feel good war. The reason Israel has been succesful in the past is they struck back without pause. Now they have to deal with all the phoney outrage every step they take.

People seem to easily forget intent and let guilty parties get away with evil.

Sure Israel killed some civilians, that happens in war.

Hezbolla however is givin a pass though because they were unsucessful in their attempts. The only thing that stopped Hezbolla from killing possibly thousands was their technology, not a lack of trying.

Oh well, I guess this little step makes some people feel good about themselves despite the lack of any real resolution.

    :outta:

  9.

Why a delay in ceasefire, Bhakta Don? Is it because you want Israel to kill more people? Israel started the war to get bacl their soldiers, to dismantle terrorist camps etc., but it seems as if they've suffered a defeat at the hands of hezbulah. A ceasefire is a dignified exit for them.

The ceasefire is the only defeat Israel has suffered, once again they will leave their security to the UN. The same UN that promised them Hezbolla would be disarmed years ago.

Bhakta Don you ask about global resolve ? Has there EVER been such a thing ? Rwanda ? Sudan ? Heck, Africa Period. The world could cure starvation in a few short years if the people in the towers really cared. If they lack the heart and will to feed they most definatly lack the heart for what needs to be done in this situation. :(

  10. Some people choose the strangest ways to hear about Krishna

Rather than pretend to protest the should just drop the ego and share a meal and conversation, its not like we bite

"If one loves Krishna, he must love Lord Jesus also. And if one perfectly loves Jesus he must love Krishna too. If he says, "Why shall I love Krishna? I shall love Jesus," then he has no knowledge. And if one says, "Why shall I love Jesus? I shall love Krishna", then he has no knowledge either. If one understands Krishna, then he will understand Jesus. If one understands Jesus, you'll understand Krishna too"

(Srila Prabhupada - Room conversation with Allen Ginsberg, May 12, 1969 / Columbus - Ohio)

  11. Grabbed these from the web they make sense :)

Since dry mouth can increase bacterial buildup and cause or worsen bad breath, chewing sugarless gum can help with the production of Saliva , and thereby help to reduce bad breath.

Adding lemon juice to your water is refreshing and also beneficial.

Parsley is a natural breath freshener when chewed slowly, and is easy to grow at home.
