Assuming that the article had come from the Vedabase or a similar archive, we didn't look-up a specific source citation. We were pleased to learn that there is, in fact, a very interesting story behind the 'Ambassador' article. On September 22, 1965, just five days after arriving in the U.S., Srila Prabhupada gave a lecture at the YMCA in Butler, Pennsylvania. The local newspaper, the Butler Eagle, printed an article and picture of the event. check it out! this article was a Protectacow "Exclusive" but now it is all over the place! Jaya Srila Prabhupada! Given their dedicated service to cow protection, the devotees were very pleased to discover that Srila Prabhupada had made mention of the cows in his very first article from the West: ...... "Life and Milk of Cow" is all-important to the Swamiji's way of life; all else is artificial, he claims.

Yesterday New Talavan and New Orleans were hit by Hurricane Katrina, a devastating Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 175 MPH. The eye of the storm came ashore near Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi, and passed within 10 miles of New Talavan. By Krsna's grace and Lord Nrsimhadeva's mercy, everyone here at New Talavan is OK. There were no casualties or injuries. However, we have had no contact with New Orleans temple since the storm. The situation in New Orleans is critical: extensive wind damage and flooding, highways into the city are devastated, and many casualties. We advised the New Orleans devotees on Sunday to evacuate to the farm before the storm hit, but they could not be convinced to leave. We are very concerned about the devotees there. Here are the details: the storm hit yesterday early morning. By dawn the winds were over 60 MPH. The hurricane peaked about 11 AM. There was a short lull and then the winds picked up again in the reverse direction. Many trees are down-up to 50% of trees in some wind-exposed areas. The roads are completely blocked, electricity and phones are down, even cell phones because the towers rely on electricity to function. We had no significant damage to the Temple and kitchen. There was some slight damage to the men's ashram, temple office and *sannyasi *quarters. There was heavy wind and rain damage to the Gurukula building, and our workshop building was devastated. One devotee's trailer was destroyed by falling trees, and another devotee's cottage lost part of the roof. There may be other damage in remote parts of the farm that we have not yet seen. Extensive cleanup and repairs will be required before we are back to anything near normal status. Krsna's cows are fine; as far as we know none were injured by falling trees. They were seen placidly grazing in 120 MPH winds! Cows are something else. We do have a lot of fence damage, however, and will have to manage our herds carefully to keep them on the property and out of danger until the fences are repaired. We do not expect to have electricity for a few weeks. Roads everywhere are blocked by fallen trees until county bulldozers can get around to clearing them. So no one is going anywhere for awhile. Fortunately, we have plenty of food, gasoline and diesel fuel. Our water system has a propane-powered generator. As soon as we can clear some roads, we will have a diesel generator for the temple and kitchen. The devotee community is pulling together to repair the damage, and we expect that things will turn out well. We are thankful for Krsna's merciful protection. I really appreciate your reaction to my critisim, with a "thanks" no less! /images/graemlins/grin.gif=real devotee, you are! /images/graemlins/grin.gif But again i must come back with my retort, no matter please if i can't spell all words corectly. I do not see all our farms as dismal failures. My work with other's put together has now saved over 200 cows due to Prabhupada's great desire to do so. Perhaps those farms where so many cows were saved were not perfect ideal examples of Brahminical Culture. But looking from the hoofs of so many cows, oxen, calfs and retired animals, it was a great success. Along with the chanting of us, perhaps the world is more peacefull than what it would have been if Prabhupada had not set this into motion. I would argue that my life since my teen years, all engaged in Srila Prabhupada's Cow Protection work, and now approaching 30 years, is not a "dismal failure". The only "dismal failure" is the lack of full following of Prabhupada's words. He gave us instructions and we did not all listen, THAT IS THE DISMAL FAILURE. Not saving hundreds of Krishna's Surabhi Representatives! So Krsna consciousness means to follow the instruction of Krsna. Our life has a certain aim in this material world, sometimes we forget. Material world means forgetting our aim of life; that is natural. The basic principle of material life is forgetting Krsna: krsna- bahirmukha jiva bhoga-vancha kare nikata-stha maya tare japatiya dhare [From Jagadananda Pandita, Prema-vivarta: "Turning his face away from Krsna, the jiva develops the desire to enjoy. Standing nearby, Maya slaps him and seizes hold of him." {Translation by Gopiparanadhana dasa.}] Forgetfulness is our nature, we are not as perfect as God, therefore, there are so many inefficiencies. So forgetfulness is also another material quality. So material life means forgetting Krsna. Maya means when one has forgotten his relationship with Krsna, that is called maya. So Krsna is very kind. When we forget too much, this material world is forgetfulness, but still, according to the Vedic system, Krsna consciousness is maintained to some extent if you follow the Vedic principles, then we revive our consciousness, our relationship. That is explained by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu when he was talking with Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya, that the Vedic principle is to revive or to remind our relationship with Krsna. In the Bhagavad-gita also Krsna says, vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyah [bg. 15.15], the real purpose of Vedic knowledge is to come to the understanding of Krsna consciousness. So this Krsna consciousness movement is trying to revive the original, constitutional position. So one of them, in Krsna consciousness movement, is village organization, as you are trying here. Krsna, in His natural life, is a village boy in Vrndavana. Vrndavana is a village. There is no factory, there is no motor-car, there are no big, big sky-scraper buildings; it is village. That Krsna likes. In the sastra it is said, vrndavanam parityajya, sa kvacin naiva gacchati [From Srila Rupa Gosvami, Laghu-bhagavatamrta 1.5.461: "...Krsna manifests His pastimes in the cities of Mathura and Dvaraka, but Krsna the son of Nanda Maharaja never at any time leaves Vrndavana."] Krsna is so fond of that Vrndavana village life, with His cowherd boys and cowherd girls, His gopis, Mother Yasoda, Father Nanda, and Upananda, uncles, and big family, the cows and the calves, the trees, the Yamuna River. He is satisfied in that life. So at least those who are Krsna conscious, they should be satisfied with simple life in the village. That is part of Krsna consciousness. But it does not mean that we shall avoid city life or town life, not. Everything, every place is Krsna's place. Everywhere there should be Krsna consciousness. But if we keep ourself within the village and properly organize as Krsna personally showed us the example, He was personally taking care of cows, calves. When He was a child, He was taking care of the calves. When He was grown up, He was taking care of the cows, although He was a very rich man's son; Nanda Maharaj was the village king. But still, He was working hard the whole day, going in the morning to the pasturing ground and coming back in the evening. Then He used to take His bath, change dress, and immediately go to sleep. This was Krsna's pastime. So we should follow His footprints. What is that verse? asraddadhanah purusa dharmasyasya parantapa aprapya mam nivartante mrtyu-samsara-vartmani [bg. 9.3: "Those who are not faithful in this devotional service cannot attain Me, O conqueror of enemies. Therefore they return to the path of birth and death in this material world."] So whatever Krsna has taught by His personal life, by His teaching, to follow that is Krsna consciousness. Everything is there in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. His personal life is there, and Bhagavad-gita, His teaching are there, and He comes for this purpose: paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam dharma-samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge [bg. 4.8: "To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after millennium."] Those who are naturally God-conscious, to deliver them, to make their life perfect, in this life. This life should be the last material life and next life they should go directly to Krsna. janma karma ca me divyam evam yo vetti tattvatah tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti so 'rjuna [bg. 4.9: "One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna."] If we become fully Krsna conscious, simply try to under stand what is Krsna, there is no difficulty: Krsna is the Supreme Controller, that's all. There is a supreme controller -- that we have to accept, as we were discussing in the bus this morning. There is no way out, there is not way out that you will deny the Supreme Controller, that is not possible. So there is a Supreme Controller. If you are a sane man you'll understand very easily, and that Supreme Controller is Krsna. He comes personally and says: mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya mayi sarvam idam protam sutre mani-gana iva [bg. 7.7: "O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread."] There is no other controller above Krsna, therefore, He is the Supreme Controller: isvarah paramah krsnah [bs. 5.1], the Supreme Controller. The Supreme Controller, He is giving us instruction. If we follow His instruction, very simple, and remain in this village, satisfied with simple life, agricultural produce, milk, how many nice things you have produced, where is the difficulty? There is no economic problem. You are getting so much milk that it is becoming a problem how to utilize it. In India we are in scarcity of milk. So, krsi-go-raksya-vanijyam. [bg. 18.44]: "Farming, cow protection and trade are the natural work for the vaisyas..."] If you have got enough milk you can make trade. Vanijyam, that is Krsna's instruction. It is not that we hate the modern system. No, we do not hate anything. Nirbandhah krsna-sambandhe. [From Bhakti -rasamrta- sindhu 2.255: "When one is not attached to anything, but at the same time accepts everything in relation to Krsna, one is rightly situated above possessiveness. On the other hand, one who rejects everything without knowledge of its relationship to Krsna is not as complete in his renunciation."] we want to try to engage everything in Krsna's service. If modern machine is there, we don't hate it. We must find out the means how this machine can be utilized for Krsna's service. So if you have got excess milk, you can make it powdered milk and you can send to India in any amount. It will be consumed. At least we can use it in out different centers, we can distribute. So there is no question. Besides that, you can prepare ghee from milk. From milk first of all drink as much as you like. then convert it into yogurt, next day, next day, next day. And then, when that is also enough, then churn it, take out butter...buttermilk and butter...and drink butter milk with capati. It is very palatable, very nutritious. Then butter...if you have got excess butter, then turn into ghee, and ghee can be preserved for years. There's no question of preservation. You send it to cities and towns. And we are now encouraging to open prasad distribution restaurant. They can utilize the ghee. Then where is the problem? There is no problem. Each drop of milk you can utilize to the perfect utility point. And if there are excess cows, you have got some woods, so you cut out the trees and make an encirclement and keep them there. They will live there. So there is no problem. Krsna was maintaining 900,000 cows. There is no problem. But give protection to the cows. That is the order of Krsna. We cannot be so ungrateful that we kill our mother. Milk is so important. We are drinking the milk of the cow, and in exchange, if we cut the throat of our mother, that is not civilization. That is barbarism, less than animal. Animals also, they have respect for mother. So try to give protection to the cow, that is a pious activity, and you'll not be in scarcity. Live village life, simple life, and be satisfied with the bare necessities. There is no need of luxury. And save time and chant Hare Krsna. This is ideal life. So I am very pleased that you are doing that, and do it more nicely so that others may be attracted. This town life, industrial life, factory life, is asuric life. It is killing human ambition. It is killing civilization. So there are many other businesses for a Krsna conscious person, because in the Bhagavad-gita, Krsna speaks all around: sociology, politics, philosophy, religion, culture, economics, everything is there. If you simply follow Krsna's instructions, then you get cultural life all around. So this is an ideal village. Develop it more and more. Our Paramananda is there. He is very experienced, and others are there. Do it very nicely. I am very happy to see that things are going nicely. Thank you very much

Govindram Prabhu pointed out the down load to computer type "complete works of ACBS" and it has given me much Brahminical Culture, but could not find the talk that i have read transcripts of at Sri Gita Nagari as you say. It may be like the words said about going to Sri Gita Nagari to fullfill his and His "Varnashrama" or Simple Living/High Thinking idea. Saying from what i have read also in transcripts "Now i must go and finish the other 50% of my mission". But even if i do not find those exact words in a folio disk, i "know".

Our experience and Prabhupada's word is that a good Cow Protector CAN milk a cow for years. But the Cow HAS to trust the Protector to do so. It does not surprise me too much though to read someone who signs his post as "varnashrama" being one of the main people to doubt Prabhupada and a Succesfull devotee's words on a certain subject. "varnashrama" can NOT work untill the COW is there first. Always Prabhupada says that Vedic Culture=Cow and Brahmana. To allow some retired cows to graze on one's property is not much experience, with cows, i think. And to be so doubtfull that a PROPERLY Protected Cow, who is Cared for and has Trust in her Protector, can give more milk than what a commercial dairy farmer gets. And put so many stumbling blocks in the way of another directive given by our Founder/Acharya, namely the Dried Milk Program. Makes me wonder why does someone use the words "varnashrama" in their signature? Why doubt others experience and Founder's words? And why try to talk others out of trying to fullfill those words? Varnashrama the dif. between aryan and barbarian! Who is the barbarian? Now, me thinks i know! barbarian 2 DISAPPROVING a person with little education who has no interest in art and culture: - How can you call those barbarians your friends? 1 a member of a group of people from a very different country or culture that is considered to be less socially advanced and more violent than your own: - The walled city was attacked by barbarian hordes.

Very nice to donate to a goshala in India. But remember that in most places in India, the Cow is still our Mother and Protected. Just think of a place that Protects Cows but is in the land of Cow Slaughter Houses, if you donate and help that . you are helping make Vrndavana in a foreign land. We Protect Cows in the Land where the Cow is seen as not Mother but "dinner". So our place has become Vrndavana, but is surrounded by Hell. Prabhupada: Yes. That I want. I... Everywhere I go and say, how these rascals...? So much land is lying, and these rascals are not developing. And they are making... What is that? Coal stone. Coal. They are interested with these bricks and stones, not green vegetables. Such a rascal government. Give them facility. We know how to do it. Annad bhavanti bhutani parjanyad anna-sambhavah, yajnad bhavati parjanyah. Let them engage in kirtana. There will be more water for gardening, and it will be moist, and then produce fodder for the animals and food for you. And animal gives you milk. That is Vrndavana life. And they are absorbed in this so-called opulence. Krsna has taken birth. They are bringing so many nice, pleasant foodstuff, very well-dressed and ornamented. These are description. In the morning we were reading. How they were happy, the inhabitants of Vrndavana with Krsna and living and cows. That I want to introduce. At any cost do it and... Don't bother about big, big buildings. It is not required. Useless waste of time. Produce. Make the whole field green. See that. Then whole economic question solved. Then you eat sumptuous. Eat sumptuously. The animal is happy. The animal even does not give milk; let them eat and pass stool and urine. That is welcome. After all, eating, they will pass stool. So that is beneficial, not that simple milk is beneficial. Even the stool is beneficial. Therefore I am asking so much here and..., "Farm, farm, farm, farm..." That is not my program--Krsna's program. Annad bhavanti bhutani. Produce greenness everywhere, everywhere. Vrndavana. It is not this motorcar civilization. If it has taken in his brain, then it is to be understood that he can do this plan.

excerpt from the text purport: Therefore the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, directly advocates go-raksya, the protection of cows. Civilized men who follow the system of varnasrama, especially those of the vaisya class, who engage in agriculture and trade, must give protection to the cows. Unfortunately, because people in Kali-yuga are mandah, all bad, and sumanda-matayah, misled by false conceptions of life, they are killing cows in the thousands. Therefore they are unfortunate in spiritual consciousness, and nature disturbs them in so many ways, especially through incurable diseases like cancer and through frequent wars and among nations. As long as human society continues to allow cows to be regularly killed in slaughterhouses, there cannot be any question of peace and prosperity.

A cow will go dry if you do not milk her, but usually only after getting Mastitis from the milk left over. What i am saying (and feel like i am talking to someone who does not want to hear) is that you can milk a cow for her entire lifetime after only one calf IF! if you care for her, appreciate her, feed her as a milker, and milk her still daily, respect her, keep her clean and happy, see her as your own Mother, more or less treat her like the Deity that she is! Our experience is that a cow will give about 1 gallon for the Brown Swiss type cow year after year per day. (if the above rules are followed) By the way, no Iskcon farm had "hundreds" of milk cows, Gita Nagari and New Vrndavana had hundreds of "cows" but they were broken into these different catagories........ young cows and oxen, retired animals (which includes birth defected types,unbreed cows, untrained oxen) oxen, and then milk cows. Gita Nagari had at one time almost 30 milk cows, and they were forced into a dry period by changing their diet a month or two before their next Calfing. Now we know that at Gita Nagari, so many cows did not have to be breed to maintain milk production, but our leaders were looking to commercial dairy for their systems, instead of listening and following Srila Prabhupada. (the first cow that i saw giving milk for over a decade was at Gita Nagari, and her name was Vishaka, ask Mother Kaulini Prabhu)

Prabhu you say that your experience is that cows "dry up" after a while, but do not say how long that while is, and do not clearify the words "dry up". I do know that commercial dairys in USA use the words "dry up" for cows that just do not give as much as the beginning of their Lactation. But they NEVER actually go dry and give nothing. (they have to put the cows on special diets to get them to completely dry up, before the cow can give birth again.) Cows do give less after the first year or so of Lactation, but NEVER completely go dry. Our cows that give milk for years and years give much less than their first year of lactation, but never go dry. But still the amount that they give is still enough to satisfy our small family. So i want to stress that if you care for your cows and give them plenty of good pasture and feed, you will be able to get some milk for years. It might not be the same as when she is "fresh" but there will be some. Most of the time the amount given is enough for a small family. I also want to stress that this is NOT any kind of Secret and that Prabhupada is not misstaken in his statement, that is our experience. We have to have faith in Prabhupada and Krishna not commercial dairys and their experiences, or products. I have not only experience with Cow Protection under Srila Prabhupada's earliest Cow Herds, but with Commercial Dairys from my younger years.

TRANSLATION Being puffed up by material power, Kartaviryarjuna encouraged his men to steal Jamadagni's kamadhenu. Thus the men forcibly took away the crying kamadhenu, along with her calf, to Mahismati, Kartaviryarjuna's capital. PURPORT The word havirdhanim is significant in this verse. Havirdhanim refers to a cow required for supplying havis, or ghee, for the performance of ritualistic ceremonies in sacrifices. In human life, one should be trained to perform yajnas. As we are informed in Bhagavad-gita (3.9), yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah: if we do not perform yajna, we shall simply work very hard for sense gratification like dogs and hogs. This is not civilization. A human being should be trained to perform yajna. Yajnad bhavati parjanyah. If yajnas are regularly performed, there will be proper rain from the sky, and when there is regular rainfall, the land will be fertile and suitable for producing all the necessities of life. Yajna, therefore, is essential. For performing yajna, clarified butter is essential, and for clarified butter, . cow protection is essential. Therefore, if we neglect the Vedic way of civilization, we shall certainly suffer. So-called scholars and philosophers do not know the secret of success in life, and therefore they suffer in the hands of prakrti, nature (prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah). Nonetheless, although they are forced to suffer, they think they are advancing in civilization (ahankara-vimudhatma kartaham iti manyate). The Krsna consciousness movement is therefore meant to revive a mode of civilization in which everyone will be happy. This is the motive of our Krsna consciousness movement. Yajne sukhena bhavantu. Simple living, high thinking and high practice. That's the cornerstone of our philosophies . Bhagavan: It seems they are struggling so hard for existence they do not have time to contemplate these simple things, working so hard. Prabhupada: So show the simple example that how by simple living and thinking of Krsna, one can become perfect and happy. Prabhupada: Everything business. "Bring money. Bring money." Because money is the medium of sense gratification. They have been accustomed to sense gratification. Money is required. So bring money some way or other. And here, the civilization was plain living, simple living. Minimize the expenditure and develop Krsna consciousness. Then you will be happy. What is the difficulty? But if you want brothel and night dancing and wine and meat-eating, then it is spoiled. It becomes impure. To become pure is not at all difficult. Rather, to become impure, it is difficult. But people, with all difficulties, they are becoming impure. Otherwise the idea which I am giving, you can start anywhere, anywhere, any part of the world. It doesn't matter. Locally you produce your own food. You get your own cloth. Have sufficient milk, vegetables. Then what you want more? And chant Hare Krsna. This is Vedic civilization: plain living, high thinking. And poor thinking, poor in thought, poor in behavior, and living with motorcar and this, that, nonsense. It is all nonsense civilization. Another feature of the devotee is nirihaya, simple living. Niriha means "gentle,meek" or "simple." A devotee should not live very gorgeously and imitate a materialistic person. Plain living and high thinking are recommended for a devotee. It is by ignorance that people think that by opening factories they will be happy. Why should they open factories? There is no need. There is so much land, and one can produce one's own food grains and eat sumptuously without any factory. Milk is also available without a factory. The factory cannot produce milk or grains. The present scarcity of food in the world is largely due to such factories. When everyone is working in the city to produce nuts and bolts, who will produce food grains? Simple living and high thinking is the solution to economic problems. Therefore the Krsna consciousness movement in engaging devotees in producing their own food and living self-sufficiently so that rascals may see how one can live very peacefully, eat the food grains one has grown oneself, drink milk, and chant Hare Krsna. If one lives a simple life--plain living and high thinking--he can progress and can cultivate the same Krsna consciousness even within the family. satya sama saucam arjavam, simplicity. Not to encourage artificial necessities of life. Simple life, plain living, high thinking, simplicity. And titiksa, tolerance. Because this world is miserable. Simply increasing artificial life, even for shaving, a big machine is required. What is this? Simply wasting time. Devil's workshop. Make life very simple. And simple living, high thinking, and always conscious to go back to home, back to Krsna. That is life. Not this life, that simply machine, machine, machine, machine. So if you show practical example that how you are living simple life and how you are advanced in Krsna consciousness, then people will learn from you. But certainly we can start reducing this greed. Reduce and reduce. And then that's the only way to purify the mind. And then ought show such a society where greed has been reduced will be relatively a peaceful society. The transcendentalist is specifically warned herewith to be fixed in mind, so that even if there is difficulty in plain living and high thinking he will not budge even an inch from his stark determination. For a transcendentalist, it is a suicidal policy to be intimately in touch with the sense gratifiers of the world, because such a policy will frustrate the ultimate gain of life. The sufferings of human society are due to a polluted aim of life, namely lording it over the material resources. The more human society engages in the exploitation of undeveloped material resources for sense gratification, the more it will be entrapped by the illusory, material energy of the Lord, and thus the distress of the world will be intensified instead of diminished. The human necessities of life are fully supplied by the Lord in the shape of food grains, milk, fruit, wood, stone, sugar, silk, jewels, cotton, salt, water, vegetables, etc., in sufficient quantity to feed and care for the human race of the world as well as the living beings on each and every planet within the universe. The supply source is complete, and only a little energy by the human being is required to get his necessities into the proper channel. There is no need of machines and tools or huge steel plants for artificially creating comforts of life. Life is never made comfortable by artificial needs, but by plain living and high thinking. Everyone must understand Krsna's activities (janma karma ca me divyam). If one understands the purpose of Krsna's coming to this earth and performing His activities, one is immediately liberated. This liberation is the purpose of the creation and Krsna's descent upon the surface of the earth. Demons are very much interested in advancing a plan by which people will labor hard like cats, dogs and hogs, but Krsna's devotees want to teach Krsna consciousness so that people will be satisfied with plain living and Krsna conscious advancement. Although demons have created many plans for industry and hard labor so that people will work day and night like animals, this is not the purpose of civilization. Such endeavors are jagato'hitah; that is, they are meant for the misfortune of the people in general. Ksayaya: such activities lead to annihilation. One who understands the purpose of Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, should seriously understand the importance of the Krsna consciousness movement and seriously take part in it. One should not endeavor for ugra-karma, or unnecessary work for sense gratification. But the poor materialist makes plans to live comfortably here and thus wastes his valuable human energy in something which is doomed to frustration. Instead of wasting his time with business speculations, he might have sought the life of plain living and high spiritual thinking and thus saved himself from perpetual materialistic unrest. The net result is scarcity all over the world, so much so that even the bare necessities of life, namely food and clothing, become objects of contention and control. And so arise all sorts of obstacles to the traditional, God-given life of plain living and high thinking. Human life is meant for plain living and high thinking. Since all conditioned living beings are under the control of the Lord's third energy, this material world is designed so that one is obliged to work. If people are advised not to collect too many goods, eat too much or work unnecessarily to possess artificial amenities, they think they are being advised to return to a primitive way of life. Generally people do not like to accept plain living and high thinking. That is their unfortunate position. That is the Krsna philosophy. Be satisfied, plain living and high thinking. That is required. And that is the best type of civilization. Plain living, high thinking So many things, materialistic persons they possess. But we try to simplify matters, plain living. Surabhi is the name of the cows which exist in the spiritual planets and are especially reared by Lord Sri Krsna Himself. As men are made after the form and features of the Supreme Lord, so also the cows are made after the form and features of the surabhi cows in the spiritual kingdom. In the material world the human society gives all protection to the human being, but there is no law to protect the descendants of Surabhi, who can give all protection to men by supplying the miracle food, milk. But Maharaja Pariksit and the Pandavas were fully conscious of the importance of the cow and bull, and they were prepared to punish the cow-killer with all chastisement, including death. There has sometimes been agitation for the protection of the cow, but for want of pious executive heads and suitable laws, the cow and the bull are not given protection. The human society should recognize the importance of the cow and the bull and thus give all protection to these important animals, following in the footsteps of Maharaja Pariksit. For protecting the cows and brahminical culture, the Lord, who is very kind to the cow and the brahmanas (go-brahmana-hitaya), will be pleased with us and will bestow upon us real peace. Every woman especially must get married. If the women outnumber the men, some men can accept more than one wife. In that way there will be no prostitution in society. If men can marry more than one wife, illicit sex life will be stopped. One can also produce many nice preparations to offer Krsna--grain, fruit, flowers and milk. Why should one indulge in unnecessary meat-eating and maintain horrible slaughterhouses? What is the use of smoking and drinking tea and coffee? people are already intoxicated by material enjoyment, and if they indulge in further intoxication, what chance is there for self-realization? Similarly, one should not partake in gambling and unnecessarily agitate the mind. The real purpose of human life is to attain the spiritual platform and return to Godhead. That is the summum bonum of spiritual realization. The Krsna consciousness movement is trying to elevate human society to the perfection of life by pursuing the method described by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in His advice to the brahmana Kurma. That is, one should stay at home, chant the Hare Krsna mantra and preach the instructions of Krsna as they are given in Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam.

I did not say that one can milk a cow for years without breeding, i said that our experience with a few cows now is that after the breeding and gestation a cow can Lactate for the rest of her lifetime for that ONE Calf! This is something that recent devotees or devotees without as much experience with cows often argue as being "impossible" saying that you have to breed the cow every year to have her milk for year after year. If yajnas are regularly performed, there will be proper rain from the sky, and when there is regular rainfall, the land will be fertile and suitable for producing all the necessities of life. Yajna, therefore, is essential. For performing yajna, clarified butter is essential, and for clarified butter, . cow protection is essential. Therefore, if we neglect the Vedic way of civilization, we shall certainly suffer. So-called scholars and philosophers do not know the secret of success in life, and therefore they suffer in the hands of prakrti, nature (prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah). Nonetheless, although they are forced to suffer, they think they are advancing in civilization (ahankara-vimudhatma kartaham iti manyate). The Krsna consciousness movement is therefore meant to revive a mode of civilization in which everyone will be happy. This is the motive of our Krsna consciousness movement. Yajne sukhena bhavantu. Simple living, high thinking and high practice. That's the cornerstone of our philosophies . Bhagavan: It seems they are struggling so hard for existence they do not have time to contemplate these simple things, working so hard. Prabhupada: So show the simple example that how by simple living and thinking of Krsna, one can become perfect and happy. Prabhupada: Everything business. "Bring money. Bring money." Because money is the medium of sense gratification. They have been accustomed to sense gratification. Money is required. So bring money some way or other. And here, the civilization was plain living, simple living. Minimize the expenditure and develop Krsna consciousness. Then you will be happy. What is the difficulty? But if you want brothel and night dancing and wine and meat-eating, then it is spoiled. It becomes impure. To become pure is not at all difficult. Rather, to become impure, it is difficult. But people, with all difficulties, they are becoming impure. Otherwise the idea which I am giving, you can start anywhere, anywhere, any part of the world. It doesn't matter. Locally you produce your own food. You get your own cloth. Have sufficient milk, vegetables. Then what you want more? And chant Hare Krsna. This is Vedic civilization: plain living, high thinking. And poor thinking, poor in thought, poor in behavior, and living with motorcar and this, that, nonsense. It is all nonsense civilization. Another feature of the devotee is nirihaya, simple living. Niriha means "gentle,meek" or "simple." A devotee should not live very gorgeously and imitate a materialistic person. Plain living and high thinking are recommended for a devotee. It is by ignorance that people think that by opening factories they will be happy. Why should they open factories? There is no need. There is so much land, and one can produce one's own food grains and eat sumptuously without any factory. Milk is also available without a factory. The factory cannot produce milk or grains. The present scarcity of food in the world is largely due to such factories. When everyone is working in the city to produce nuts and bolts, who will produce food grains? Simple living and high thinking is the solution to economic problems. Therefore the Krsna consciousness movement in engaging devotees in producing their own food and living self-sufficiently so that rascals may see how one can live very peacefully, eat the food grains one has grown oneself, drink milk, and chant Hare Krsna. If one lives a simple life--plain living and high thinking--he can progress and can cultivate the same Krsna consciousness even within the family. satya sama saucam arjavam, simplicity. Not to encourage artificial necessities of life. Simple life, plain living, high thinking, simplicity. And titiksa, tolerance. Because this world is miserable. Simply increasing artificial life, even for shaving, a big machine is required. What is this? Simply wasting time. Devil's workshop. Make life very simple. And simple living, high thinking, and always conscious to go back to home, back to Krsna. That is life. Not this life, that simply machine, machine, machine, machine. So if you show practical example that how you are living simple life and how you are advanced in Krsna consciousness, then people will learn from you. But certainly we can start reducing this greed. Reduce and reduce. And then that's the only way to purify the mind. And then ought show such a society where greed has been reduced will be relatively a peaceful society. The transcendentalist is specifically warned herewith to be fixed in mind, so that even if there is difficulty in plain living and high thinking he will not budge even an inch from his stark determination. For a transcendentalist, it is a suicidal policy to be intimately in touch with the sense gratifiers of the world, because such a policy will frustrate the ultimate gain of life. The sufferings of human society are due to a polluted aim of life, namely lording it over the material resources. The more human society engages in the exploitation of undeveloped material resources for sense gratification, the more it will be entrapped by the illusory, material energy of the Lord, and thus the distress of the world will be intensified instead of diminished. The human necessities of life are fully supplied by the Lord in the shape of food grains, milk, fruit, wood, stone, sugar, silk, jewels, cotton, salt, water, vegetables, etc., in sufficient quantity to feed and care for the human race of the world as well as the living beings on each and every planet within the universe. The supply source is complete, and only a little energy by the human being is required to get his necessities into the proper channel. There is no need of machines and tools or huge steel plants for artificially creating comforts of life. Life is never made comfortable by artificial needs, but by plain living and high thinking. Everyone must understand Krsna's activities (janma karma ca me divyam). If one understands the purpose of Krsna's coming to this earth and performing His activities, one is immediately liberated. This liberation is the purpose of the creation and Krsna's descent upon the surface of the earth. Demons are very much interested in advancing a plan by which people will labor hard like cats, dogs and hogs, but Krsna's devotees want to teach Krsna consciousness so that people will be satisfied with plain living and Krsna conscious advancement. Although demons have created many plans for industry and hard labor so that people will work day and night like animals, this is not the purpose of civilization. Such endeavors are jagato'hitah; that is, they are meant for the misfortune of the people in general. Ksayaya: such activities lead to annihilation. One who understands the purpose of Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, should seriously understand the importance of the Krsna consciousness movement and seriously take part in it. One should not endeavor for ugra-karma, or unnecessary work for sense gratification. But the poor materialist makes plans to live comfortably here and thus wastes his valuable human energy in something which is doomed to frustration. Instead of wasting his time with business speculations, he might have sought the life of plain living and high spiritual thinking and thus saved himself from perpetual materialistic unrest. The net result is scarcity all over the world, so much so that even the bare necessities of life, namely food and clothing, become objects of contention and control. And so arise all sorts of obstacles to the traditional, God-given life of plain living and high thinking. Human life is meant for plain living and high thinking. Since all conditioned living beings are under the control of the Lord's third energy, this material world is designed so that one is obliged to work. If people are advised not to collect too many goods, eat too much or work unnecessarily to possess artificial amenities, they think they are being advised to return to a primitive way of life. Generally people do not like to accept plain living and high thinking. That is their unfortunate position. That is the Krsna philosophy. Be satisfied, plain living and high thinking. That is required. And that is the best type of civilization. Plain living, high thinking So many things, materialistic persons they possess. But we try to simplify matters, plain living. You'll be pleased to learn that along with the Hare Krishna Movement in the foreign countries, we are taking care of cow protection very vigorously. There are already dozens of such centres and farms where we are protecting cows like our New Vrindaban community in West Virginia, Bhaktivedanta Manor in London, altogether over 14 such projects have been started throughout the world to date. We are giving protection to the cows with great profit. We are getting huge amounts of milk from which we are preparing lovely yogurt, dahi, sandesh, rasagully, gulabjamon, etc. We have sufficient quantity of ghee for preparing kachori, samosa, and other very palatable confectionaries. The people of this country are gradually taking this idea very seriously for vegetarian diet and stopping cow killing in a practical way. We have got more than 100 temples all over the world and attached to every temple we are opening farms and in many cities restaurants, and all of them are going on very successfully. In India the difference is that no enthusiastic young men with education are joining this movement wholeheartedly whereas in the foreign countries hundreds and thousands of qualified respectable men are joining us. It is the duty of the Vaisyas to take to agriculture and cow protection. That is mentioned in the Bhagavad-gita: Krsi goraksya vanijyam, vaisya karma svabhava jam (18.44). Unfortunately in India, the Vaisyas are not very much interested in agriculture and cow protection. They are more interested in opening factories. So how things can be done if the Vaisyas give us free advice for cow protection and then they themselves are more interested in opening factories, then how can cow protection be properly done? They say that according to their scientific way, they have discovered that milk is dangerous and that the beef obtained by killing cows is very nutritious. This difference of opinion will always continue. Indeed, it has existed since days of yore. Millions of years ago, there was the same competition. The demons, as a result of their so-called Vedic study, Generally people do not like to accept plain living and high thinking. That is their unfortunate position. Get them married. Live peacefully and culture God consciousness, Krsna consciousness. That arrangement is there. Why don't you do it? Why do you want more and more, more and more, more and more? This is foolishness. You want sex? Can you manufacture sex in the factory? No. Then? It is supplied by God. So everything, whatever you require, that is supplied by God. You take advantage of it and be God conscious or Krsna conscious. That is your business. So God has given us all facilities to come to Him, but we are unfortunate. Surabhi is the name of the cows which exist in the spiritual planets and are especially reared by Lord Sri Krsna Himself. As men are made after the form and features of the Supreme Lord, so also the cows are made after the form and features of the surabhi cows in the spiritual kingdom. In the material world the human society gives all protection to the human being, but there is no law to protect the descendants of Surabhi, who can give all protection to men by supplying the miracle food, milk. But Maharaja Pariksit and the Pandavas were fully conscious of the importance of the cow and bull, and they were prepared to punish the cow-killer with all chastisement, including death. There has sometimes been agitation for the protection of the cow, but for want of pious executive heads and suitable laws, the cow and the bull are not given protection. The human society should recognize the importance of the cow and the bull and thus give all protection to these important animals, following in the footsteps of Maharaja Pariksit. For protecting the cows and brahminical culture, the Lord, who is very kind to the cow and the brahmanas (go-brahmana-hitaya), will be pleased with us and will bestow upon us real peace. Many people come and inquire whether they have to give up family life to join the Society, but that is not our mission. One can remain comfortably in his residence. Every woman especially must get married. If the women outnumber the men, some men can accept more than one wife. In that way there will be no prostitution in society. If men can marry more than one wife, illicit sex life will be stopped. One can also produce many nice preparations to offer Krsna--grain, fruit, flowers and milk. Why should one indulge in unnecessary meat-eating and maintain horrible slaughterhouses? What is the use of smoking and drinking tea and coffee? people are already intoxicated by material enjoyment, and if they indulge in further intoxication, what chance is there for self-realization? Similarly, one should not partake in gambling and unnecessarily agitate the mind. The real purpose of human life is to attain the spiritual platform and return to Godhead. That is the summum bonum of spiritual realization. The Krsna consciousness movement is trying to elevate human society to the perfection of life by pursuing the method described by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in His advice to the brahmana Kurma. That is, one should stay at home, chant the Hare Krsna mantra and preach the instructions of Krsna as they are given in Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam.

I only mentioned the "satelite" farms for temples to be support for the local temples, and agree that powdered milk is the system for that.(especially since ACBS asked for it to be so) But really the way i see the world as Prabhupada gave us would be........ that the remaining temples be still maintained, and with Protected Cows doing it. And more importantly that the "lifestyle" of a Hare Krishna devotee is as Krishna demonstrated. With your own cow and temple at home with family. Chanting Hare Krishna in community of familys and homes all with cows and oxen or directly supporting Milk,Grains production. HOME TEMPLE! HOME TEMPLE! FAMILY TEMPLE FAMILY TEMPLE and family=wife,kids,father,mother, Krishna in the center, living as He showed us, and Prabhupada always recommended Simple Living/High Thinking. I am not new to this place, i know how the admin kicks those who don't carry the old iskcon line. my answer is that i agree with you, and we promote Cow Protection just as Prabhupada did. And that taking milk from commercial dairys is supporting them and therefore cow slaughter. I talked about how we would always rush fresh milk from the local protected herd of cows to the city temples where Prabhupada would be visiting. And Prabhupada's idea of having a "satelite" farm with fresh milk near ALL city temples. Here are some things that are not exactly "new ideas" or soulutions. Since Prabhupada explained that a Cow can give milk for her entire life on one lactation...... Yes the old system of Cow Protection had the flaw of Over Breeding. We now know that a cow can be milked on one lactation for many many years. we have witnessed a cow giving a fair amount for over 15 years, and a cow usually only has a life span of 20 tops. If a family has a cow and one calf from her, that family can have milk for many years to come. Protected milk, with NO support for cow slaughter.Plus along with that comes the lifestyle that also supports Krishna Consciousness, and possibly save the world by moving back to the Vedic Ideal of Civilization with the Mother and Father back in their proper respected place, instead of where they are going now, with the help of devotees. Going Vegan sometimes is the best choice for those who just do not have enough faith in Krishna and Prabhupada, who by example and words both advised to Protect Cows. And sometimes going Vegan is for those who are allergic to Cow Milk. Which type Vegan are you?
