I have one basic question on Calculation of Gandanta.

I have come across 2 school of thoughts.

FIRST

While reckoning the gandanta in terms of the arc of the zodiac, we must take last 66.67 arc min of the last Nakshatra of the watery signs and the first 40 arc mins of the first Nakshatra of the fiery signs.

SECOND

Gandanta means planet between last 3 deg of jalatatwa rasi and first 3 deg of agnitatva rasi

For example – If the Birth takes place when lagna is between ‘Aslesha (Cancer) – Magha (Leo) junction’, then which of the following is correct

As per first school of thought –

Lagna Gandanta Dosha exists only when the Lagna is between 0 Le 40’00.00" and 29 Cn 33’40.20"

As per first school of thought –

Lagna Gandanta Dosha exists only when the Lagna is between 3 Le 00’00.00" and 27 Cn 00’00.00"

It is factually incorrect to predict the phala purely based on the planet position in lagna kundali without referring to the devisional chart.

Here afflicted ketu makes native tale-bearer, he always resorts to speak untruth and will be afflicted by windy dieses (afflicted Jupiter) or by rheumatism (afflicted saturn)

If heavily afflicted, then suffers from mouth dieses, faces opposition from family members, gets responsibility as care taker of large family, always speak hastily without thinking of the consequences and hurting others.

If this krtu is afflicted by moon, then native invites troubles due to his speech.

If this ketu receives devine aspects from strong guru and shukra then native gets recognition in the family, feeds many peoples (anna dharma), laways performs punyacharan beneficial to family members, non materialistic attitude.

Respected Shri. Sandhuji, you are absolutely phenomenal as usual.

Please allow me add some important rules while predicting the results of Gulika placed in different houses that I have learnt from BPHS.

As per saga Parashara, before declaring these results, the effects of Surya and other Grahas should be wisely conceived by their positions, relations and Drishtis apart from their strength, or weakness Sign depositors of these aprakashgrahas and upgrahas should be scutinised first to know the extent of effects.

For example, Gulika is suppose to give bad effects but it's depositor is well placed, well aspected then these bad effects will get minimised.

Example - Jataka born with simha lagna and Gulika in first house

Now since gulika is in lagna, he shall have weak constitution and body prone to diseases, but if the lagnesh Surya is placed in 9<SUP>th</SUP>, exalted and not receiving any affliction, will give a sound body constitution (Jeevanshakti). If the Shani is also well placed alongwith Guru then it will give good built (masculine). Hence, the bad effect of placement of Gulika in lagna are minimized to the maximum extent since it’s sign depositor is very well placed in the chart.

Another example - if Gulika is placed in 11th, hence good results are due but the graha (navgrahas) placed in 11th is afflicted, then the relative strength of the gulika compared with that graha will decide the extent of the results.

Effects of Gulika in Various Houses (Reference BPHS)

First House: the native will be afflicted by diseases, be lustful, sinful, crafty, wicked and very miserable.

Second House: the native will be unsightly in appearance, miserable, mean, given to vices, shameless and penniless.

Third House: the native will be charming in appearance, will head a village, be fond of virtuous men and be honoured by the king.

Fourth House: the native will be sickly, devoid of happiness, sinful and afflicted due to windy and billious excesses.

Fifth House: the native will not be praise-worthy, be poor, short-lived, spiteful, mean, be a eunuch, be subdued by his wife and be a heterodox.

Sixth House: the native will be devoid of enemies, be strong-bodied, splendourous, liked by his wife, enthusiastic, very friendly and helpful in disposition.

Seventh House: the native will subdue to his spouse, be sinful, will go to others’ females, be emaciated, devoid of friendship and will live on his wife’s wealth.

Eighth House: the native will be troubled by hunger, be miserable, cruel, very much short-tempered, very unkind, poor and bereft of good qualities.

Ninth House: the native will undergo many ordeals, be emaciated, will perform evil acts, be very unkind, sluggish and be a talebearer.

Tenth House: the native will be endowed with sons, be happy, will enjoy many things, be fond of worshipping gods and fire and will practice meditation and

religion.

Eleventh House: the native will enjoy women of class, be a leader of men, be helpful to his relatives, be short stature and be an emperor.

Twelfth House: the native will indulge in base deeds, be sinful, defective-limbed, unfortunate, indolent and will join mean people.

As per BPHS, Primary ingredients (or Sapth Dhatus) - Bones, blood, marrow, skin, fat, semen and muscles are, respectively, denoted by the Grahas: Sūrya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Śukr and Śani.

As per Brihat Jataka, Saturn governs nerves, the Sun rules bones, the Moon controls the blood, Mercury the skin, Venus the sperm, Jupiter the brain, and Mars the marrow.

As per most of the ancient texts, the planet Budh (Mercury) governs the Skin.

y Moon, Venus located in watery sign and afflicted by malefic OR Saturn, Mars, Moon, Venus in watery sign under the affliction of malefic may indicate skin afflictions.

y Association / aspect of rahu in sign other than his exhalted or mooltrikona sign on 6<SUP>th</SUP> house may also result in the skin problems.

White patches are formed in this birth when a oath taken before the lord or a temple in previous birth is not fulfilled in that birth knowingly. It is also formed if one performs pooja in an inebriated conditions.

The best remedy here is to pray to one’s family deity to induce one for a punya karma which will automatically fulfill the unfulfilled oath from previous births.

Apart from Kal Sarpa Dosha in your Lagna Kundali, there is Nag Dosha appearing in your Navmansa Kundali {Jupiter with Rahu in Navamansa lagna and fifth lord Moon trapped in Rahu / Ketu Axis}.

Also aspect of Saturn, Mars and Gulika on the fifth house in lagna kundali is not favourable.

What is ‘Sarpa Dosha’

I will elaborate further on ‘Sarpa Dosha’ which is also referred as ‘Nag Dosha’ or ‘Sarpa Shap Yoga’ (Curse of a Serpant). I have observed that there are a lot of forums giving valuable insight on ‘Kaalsarpa Yoga / Dosha’ but the information on ‘Nag Dosha’ is not commonly available, and hence I am writing this elaborate response.

Sarpa dosha appears in a kundali as a result of killing of snakes in previous life or from killing of snakes by fore fathers/father or self in previous births and not performing the rites (samskaras) to give the sadgati to the soul of killed snake.

This dosha may lead to the truncation of the family tree. Whenever such couple is expecting a child, either miscarriage happens or some circumstances may get developed leading to abortion. In some cases, even if the birth takes place, there is a strong likely hood of the child developing some minor / major health related issues keeping his parents constantly worried about his / her health.

One distinct indication that confirms this dosha is – a lady or her husband expecting a child either gets frequent dreams or actually happen to see a Serpent sitting or appearing in any position with his tale wound around an object.

Distinct combination in Kundali which may indicate ‘Sarpa Dosha’ –

1. Rahu in fifth house receiving aspect from mars

2. Rahu in fifth house either in mesha rashi or in vrishchik rashi

3. Fifth lord or Moon in fifth house aspected by or associated with Sani – Rahu

4. Jupiter in first house (lagna) with mars and rahu and lord of fifth house is afflicted

5. Mesha or Vrishchik rasi in fifth house either with afflicted mercury or aspected by afflicted mercury

6. Jupiter – Rahu in the first house (lagna) with lord of fifth house placed in dusthana

7. Fifth house or lord of fifth house or Jupiter linked with rahu either by association or by aspect

Views from Bhrigu Sutras, Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani on Rahu / Ketu in Fifth House

Bhrigu Sutras >> Sutras 11-13: The native will have no children or suffer loss of children due to wrath of the Serpent God. He will have children after conducting Pooja of Naga Pratima. The native will suffer from windy diseases and indulge in sinful deeds. He will suffer from wrath of the king and will live in undesirable places.

Phaladeepika: Rahu-The native will be childless, hard hearted and will suffer from stomach ailments. Ketu-The native will suffer from loss of children. He will be of evil nature and unwise. He may also suffer from 'Pishacha Badha'.

Chamatkar Chintamani: Rahu-The native will get a son. He will always be worried on account -of his wife. He will suffer from stomach ailments. Ketu-The native will suffer from stomach ailments. He will not get many children. In spite of being courageous he will remain dependent on others.

Remedial Measures

Following remedial measures are considered to be very effective in minimizing the impact of this dosha and making it from severe to moderate/negligible. A proper medical diagnosis and a suitable treatment coupled with these supportive measures always give a very positive reasults on progeny related issues.

Sarpa samskara or Ashlesha Bali at Srikshetra Kukke Subrahmanya, Karnataka

Persons who are afflicted with this dosha are advised to perform remedial measures like Sarpa samskara or Ashlesha Bali for the well being of self and the future generations. Ahlesha , Vishakha, Bharani, Krittika and some other constellations are considered in auspicious as per the traditional school of thought.

Remedial Measures can be done either by the person afflicted if he is a male and married, or through a priest. This is because the pooja involves rituals similar to the ones done in performing shraadh (death rites).

Kukke Subrahmanya is a temple located in the small, rural village of Subramanya in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India, about 105 km from Mangalore. This temple is one of the famous pilgrimage sites in India. Here the God Subrahmanya is worshipped for his divine power as a snake as the epics relate that the divine serpent Vasuki and other snakes found safety under God Subrahmanya.

Nag Bali at Shrikshetra Trayambakeshwar in Nashik, Maharashtra

This ritual is exactly similar to Sarpa samskara or Ashlesha Bali. Both these holy places have their own Sthalamahatmya mentioned in Vedas and Upnishdas.

Trimbakeshwar is a religious center having one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The extraordinary feature of the Jyotirlinga located here is its three faces embodying Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Rudra.

In this ritual the funeral is performed on the body of snake made with wheat dough. An artificial body mostly made of wheat flour is used. The references relating to this age-old tradition are found in Skandh Puran, Padma Puran and Dharma Sindhu.

Any one of these places can be chosen depending upon the convenience or the proximity to these places.

Nag Chaturthi Vrat

I am sharing the details for this, which I have received from one of the learned and esteemed astrologer

Nag chaturthi is done in shravan masa. Upavasa [fast on chaturthi] is kept. Rosting or cooking activities are not permitted on that day in the house. Lighting fire, grinding and cutting activities are strictly disallowed on the day of fast.

One shall offer milk , raw rice floor mixed with jaggery, sesame and jaggery mix , rice floor with pepper, dry coconut cup to Shesha [nag murthy-idol] . The same should be offered to the main door frame entrance of the house by the upasak (one who has undertaken this vrat) or the lady of the house.

Shloka to be chanted -

|| sheshantargat bharathi ramana mukhyapranantargata Laxmisahit anantpadnabhaya namaha || srikrishnarpana.

Upasak should repeat the same in the evening , repeat next day morning the offering [ perform aarti], offer dakshina and vastra to the bramhins ,and take meals with the family . If the upasak can afford then he shall donate silver naga kept in vessel full of ghee to the bramhin.

This vrat should be performed every year.

Vishnu Sahasranama

Chanting Vishnu Sahasranama or devotionally listening to it brings amazing benefits including avoiding evil, succeeding in battle, removing fear, avoiding calamity, and being cured of disease.

Bhishma pitamaha quote on Vishnu Sahasranama - That man who hears the names every day or who recites them every day, never meets with any evil either here or hereafter.

Remedial Measures for Kala Sarpa Dosha :

Kala Sarpa dosha plays an important role in the native's life. If a native is under the influence of Kala Sarpa dosha, the native may face sudden rise and fall in the life.

This dosha may cause the native to be separated from his family life, loss of huge wealth and fame, sudden danger to life, and even the native may also indulge in unlawful and unethical activities.

Kala Sarpa dosha is generally believed that one of the karmic dosha that may run across the generations.

A combination of remedies and ethical, simple living on the part of natives can overcome the dosha.

Regular performance of santi pooja on Shahsti Thithi and chanting the 108 names of Lord Nataraj and occasional visits to temples like Sri Kalahasti in Andhra Pradesh and Tirunageswaam may help the native.

A holy dip in river in Rameswaram and offer oblations to ancestors will help in removing the curses of piturs if that is the reason for the dosha running in the family.

Other Remedies:

1. Japam has to be performed separately for Kuja, Rahu and Ketu.

2. Those who are not financially sound may perform pooja to Lord Subramaneswara Swami temple for a minimum of seven Tuesdays.

3. Visit Rahu Temple situated In Tamilnadu Tirunageswram and perform milk abishekam in Rahukalam after performing this, visit Vaideeswaran koyal (Kuja Temple) and then Ketu temple in Peroambare and perform pooja.

4. It is advisable to visit Srikalahasthi, Andhra Pradesh, India and perform pooja for Kalasarpa Dosha Nivarana and perform Pooja to Goddess Gyana Prasunamba with kumkum.

Srikalahastheeswara Swamy Temple :

Srikalahastheeswara Swamy Temple is reputed as the Rahu–Kethu Kshetra.If the people who have Rahu Kethu Doshas, Graha Doshas and Serpa Doshas the unmarried and People who don't have Children and those who are facing various problems for a long period perform the most effective Rahu -Kethu Sarpa Dosha Nivarana Pooja in this temple all the Doshas get removed and desired results occur.

Thousands of devotees from the country and abroad perform this poojas and fulfill their vows again after receiving good results.

Rahu-Kethu Serpa Dosha Nivarana Puja can be performed daily between 6.30 am. And 9.00 p.m. on payment of As. 250/-, 500/-, 1000/(The Davasthanam will arrange all Pooja materials)

5. Wear a ring made of silver in the form of Sarpa. The same should be worn to the point finger. Purohits at Triambkeswar near Nasik are renowned for remedies to Kala Sarpa Dosha.

6. Wear Gomedika or Vaiduryam (cats eye) made of silver and wear the same in Middle finger.

7. Naga padaga made of silver and donate it to a Brahmin in Lord Siva Temple after performing Ekadasa Rudrabhishekam to reduce negative effects.

Perform Naga pooja :

The following mantras have to be chanted for 21 days regularly

Om Aaathishesha naagaayanamaha

Om Avantha nagaaya namaha

Om Vaasugiye Namaha

Om Thatcha naagaaya namaha

Om Kaarkodaka naagaaya namaha

Om Padma naagaaya namaha

Om Mahaa Padma Naagaaaya Namaha

Om Sanka naagaya namaha

Om Kuiga nagaaya namaha

The idol of snake may be gifted with new clothes, betel leaves and other auspicious items to a Vedic Brahmin at the sixth consecutive Shahsti Thithi pooja will overcome all curses due to the Naga dosha or Kala Sarpa dosha.

When learned astrologers recommend to worship ‘Lord Narayana’, it goes without saying that upasana of godess Laxmi should also be practiced simultaneously.

Laxmi upasana is a must, if you want to please lord Narayana.

Most of the stotras for Vishnu upasana written by Vaishnava scholars always start with the name of goddess laxmi. In fact, lord narsimha is always called by name Laxmi narsimha.

Following are the some of the important stotras used to please goddess laxmi –

Highly recommended – if you know Sanskrit (anvaya) then you can chant otherwise listen to it devotionally

Many thanks for your detailed explaination and your insight for micro level details. His stressed parents always ask me one question - when will he get settled. Since last 8 months, they are observing some change in his behavior towards positivity, he is at least trying now to secure some work.

He is also suggested to perform Katyayani Pooja by one of his well wisher. I have suggested him in past to visit shiva temple daily and chant the holy 'panchakshari mantra' maximum number of times possible sitting in the temple and concentrating on shivlinga.

On and off, he is following my suggesstions and now your kind suggesstions for him almost confimrs the authenticity of my remedial measures suggested.

He is very well verse in sanskit and hence i have also suggested him to recite Siddha Kunjika Stotra.

I sincerely wish and pray for the parents.
