    Why Nine Nights & Days?

Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore different aspects of the supreme goddess. On the first three days, the Mother is invoked as powerful force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects. The next three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees the inexhaustible wealth. The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the mother as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order have all-round success in life, we need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine mother; hence, the worship for nine nights.

  2. Lagna is something else

Gothram is the rishi (Such as Vasistha, Vishvamithra, etc.) to which your family traces its lineage

The priest will ask your gothram, rashi, nakshatra, etc. If you don't know your gothram people will usually say "Vishnu gothram"

In other words, if you know your gothram then you know something about the deep roots of family history. If you don't know, then it doesn't matter because we have all come from the supreme Lord Vishnu/Krishna. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

  3. There is some opinion in India today that the more "fair" the better. People in the US want to be darker (going to tanning booths to bake themselves) and people in India want to be lighter (not all people- but you *will* find "fairness creams" on the market).

In both cases I think there is a bit of status involved. Favoring "fairness"- it means you probably have a job inside rather than working in the fields. Favoring "darkness" you have all the time in the world to lay out in the sun like the stars do. At any rate...

The truly beautiful people are those from whom the sun of the inner Self- Lord Sri Krishna- is shining through the eyes, through the smile, through the voice, through the attitude, etc. And as for the Lord HIMSELF, who is the source of all beauty... my GOD, if you prefer the look of "fair" skin now, you will change your mind when you see that lovely black-bodied SRI KRISHNA!

  4. Don't start with the vedas.

Might I suggest purchasing a copy of the Bhagavad Gita to start? There are a lot of good translations out there; all of them with some idiosyncracies. I'm pretty sure that the majority of people in this forum would reccomend the Swami Prabhupada translation.

Yatra yogeshwara Krishno yatra partho dhanur-dharah

Tatra sriir vijayo bhutihi dhruvaaneetir mathir mama.

  5. Radha was Lord Krishna's beloved in Vrindavana. He never married Her, because He was of a royal birth and later went to live with His birth parents, and kill Kamsa who had kept them in prison all those years. He later married Rukmini and Satyabhama (Sridevi and Bhudevi) and 16,106 other queens.

However, Krishna never *really* left Vrindavana. He is *really* still in Vrindavana to this day. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

  6. ""The empty promises again and again by medical science that will one day soon there will be a 'cure' for old age, disease and death . It's the underlying assumption in all the 'news' of the modern world. Modernity sucks.""

My question is: what's so great about this world that you would want to stay in it for eternity? Yikes! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

  7. I am NOT suggesting that "Hare" in the mahamantra is referring to Hara (Siva)! I'm just saying that it's grammatically possible! /images/graemlins/tongue.gif Doesn't mean it's at all proper! /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I will go on thinking of "Hare" as Sri Hari and Raama as Raamacandra. If you don't mind. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
