  1. Since a no. of rs have answered the first part of your question. Here is the answer to the second part - The verses that you see that are from other parts of vedic text are chanted because they are considered "Phala-sruti" for the Rudram. The same thing is done for Srisuktam as well (the phala-sruti for sri-suktam is longer than the sukta itself).

Also, the verse Namastestu Bhagavan Vishveshvaraya.. is only chanted during Rudra Abhisheka not during Rudra homa or any other Rudra rituals. It has a ritualistic significance in Abhisheka (you need to see this done in person to find out what it is).

    Dear list members,

I was unable to get answers to these questions about the Rudram on the old

Indology list so I thought I'd try once more on the new list.

    1) All the chanting books and recordings of the Rudram litany I've come

across are the version from the Taittiriya Samhita. Is the Rudram chanted

today in Saivite temples (or anywhere else) in the versions from the other

    Yajur veda samhitas?

    2) All the chanting books and recordings of the Rudram litany I've come

across are Taittiriya Samhita chapters 4.5 and 4.7 but always include the

    following interpolated verses.

In the Rudram chant TS 4.5.1 is always followed by the following line (which

is not from the vedic corpus as far as I can see):

namaste astu bhagavanvizvezvarAya mahAdevAya tryambakAya tripurAntakAya

    trikAlAgnikAlAya kAlAgnirudrAya nIlakanThAya mRtyunjayAya sarvezvarAya

    sadAzivAya zrIman mahAdevAya namaH |

TS 4.5.11 is always followed by the following verse which consists of lines

from various different parts of the vedic texts including the Rg veda):

tryAmbakaM yajAmahe sugandhim puSTivardhanaM | urvArukamiva

bandhanAnmRtyormukSIya mAmRtAt | Yo rudro agnau yo apsu ya oSadhISu yo rudro

vizvA bhuvanA viveza tasmai rudrAya namo astu | tamuSTuhi yaH sviSuH

sudhanvA yo vizvasya kSayati bheSajasya | yakSvAmahe saumanasAya rudram

namobhirdevamasuraM duvasya | ayaM me hasto bhagavAnayaM me bhagavattaraH |

ayaM me vizvabheSajoya& zivAbhimarzanaH | Ye te sahasramayutaM pAzA mRtyo

martyAya hantave | tAnyajnasyamAyayA sarvAnava yajAmahe | mRtyave svAhA

mRtyave svAha | Om namo bhagavate rudrAya viSNave mRtyurme pAhi | prANAnAM

granthirasi rudro mA vizAntakaH | tenAnnenApyAyasva | Namo rudrAya viSNave

    mRtyurme pAhi |

    TS 4.7.11 is followed by:

    iDA devahUrmanuryajnanIrbRhaspati rukthAmadAni za&siSadvizvedevaH sUktavAcaH

pRthivi mAtarmA mA hi&sIrmadhu maniSye madhu janiSye madhu vakSyAmi madhu

vadiSyAmi madhmatIm devebhyovAcamudyAsa& zuzrUSeNyAM manuSyebhyastaM mA devA

    avantu zobhAyai pitaronumadantu |

Does anyone know if there are any references in the religious literature

about these interpolated verses and why they were included into the Rudram

litany? Do we know when these were included? Do these interpolationed

verses appear as complete verses anywhere else?

    Many thanks,

  2. Don't belive this, the fact is it doesn't matter. It is said in Mahabharata how can you insult something which is the truth. It will always shine through..the person who does this is agyani. In sum total of all things that is his biggest punishment.

  3. Excellent example - there are many verses in Arunam (Taittiriya Aranyaka prathama kandam) which will have you thinking - what did they know and how much did they know.

For example, the 'Nasadeeya Sukta'. In this 21st Century, there is no way I can think of an improvement of the verses which were perhaps written some 5000 year ago.

    Jai Sri Krishna

  4. Can you quote the verse from Purusha sukta..I don't recall it.

    Aupmanyav

I agree with you and I am not aware that Sayana states the speed of light. However I have come across a sloka in Purushasuktha, which states that 75% of the universe is Unknowable. Modern Astronomy is also says this and they call it as Dark matter and Dark energy. Do you think this also a mere chance or they (the aryans of the ice-age) might have used some mental plane which has a capacity of some kind of intuition like this ?

  5. The verse is not in Rigveda. Sayana said that it's known that sun travels 249 yojans in 1/2 nimesha. The computation to actual speed of light is pretty accurate.

    Hare Krishna!

I am hoping someone who is well versed in the Vedas (or any Veda) will answer this question. Though all comments are ofcourse wolcome.

Sayana, in his commentary on one of the verses in the Rig Veda, states the speed of light. How does he arrive at this?

Also, slightly away from this topic - How did archeologists put a date on the Rig Veda?

    Thank you

    Hare Krishna!

  6. Sivaramakrishnanji - I have a small suggestion, even after obtaining the veda in pdf files, please try to buy the books. This would go a long way to encourage the publishers to keep on publishing the books.

    Friends,

I am looking for Krishna Yajur Veda Taitriya Samhita text (in sanskrit) in pdf form so that I can download it. Please let me know any URL's where I can find it. sanskrit.org gives the same but does not have anything but kanda 1.

    Thanks in advance,

    Siva

  7. There is an organization called Veda prasara samiti they have the entire KYV & RV recited by real knowledgeable pandits. You can buy it from them.

    Namaskaram,

Great to see so may people dsicussing about Vedas, agamas and Sanskrit.

I have been looking for vedam being rendered in the traditional way. Though musicindiaonline has rudram, purusha suktham etc I am looking for more sukthams.

Is there any site which has vedam in the audio format with out any music. Please suggest me a good site. In partucular I am looking for hymns from Krishna Yajurveda and Rigvedam. Please e-mail me at varaprasad27@hotmail.com

  8. I would be very interested in the answers that you gave him. The only question I would ask him is: "Who does he think is a Brahmin" ?

Is son of a Brahmin a Brahmin ?

    or

Is it somebody who devotes his life to investigate the nature of the Brahmin.

If he/she answers this question then I can answer and explain his issue with Taittiriya Samhita, Sathapatha Brahmana etc. Also to answer shvu - No Veda is not an obsolete religion, first off it's not a religion. It's pramanam or proof all things that we know. The Sanatana dharam has been built on top of these pramanams. This is the reason all the scriptures be it Itihas, Dharam Shastra etc, sing the praises of Veda.

Actually I already got my answer from another site. Thanks. And your response is way off, and doesn't seem to have too much thought in Vedic Philosophy, nor Aryan religion, nor modern Hinduism.

  9. This is the beauty of veda that even if people don't understand the meaning of the sutras, they still feel it. This sutras occur in a section called "Dahara Vidya" of the MahaNarayano Upanishad.

The first line says: Neither by actions, nor through progeny and wealth, but by renunciation alone is immortality attained

The second line says: This State is far beyond the highest heaven, and the sages perceive it,hidden in the cave of the heart, shining brilliantly therein.

The third line says: Those, who have a clear understanding of the principles of science of Vedanta, who have purified themselves by means of the yoga of renunciation, and who are (thus) established in the state of supreme are totally liberated in the Brahman.

Read Gita, where Bhagawan talks about karma sanyas and he shows the path of mukti.

What is the meaning of the Sanyasa Suktam? 'Who is entitled to read the Sanyasa Suktam ?

'om na karmana na prajaya dhanena tyagenaike amrtatvam anasuh

parena nakam nihitam guhayam vibhrajate yad yatayo visanti

    vedanta-vijnana suniscatartha sannyasa yogad-yataya-suddha-sattvah '

These lines give me goose-bumps, I am sure there is a meaning for each of these 'Beejas'. I was wondering if Sannyasa Yogam is the highest tattvam? So what happens to people who are leading a materialistic life? Is liberation ever possible for these people?

  10. Yes it is OK for ladies to chant Suktas provided they have learnt with the proper intonations from a Guru. People who disuade you are short sighted and have zero understanding of there own scriptures. Vedas tell us about learned women like Maitrayi..who have made contributions to veda itself. To verify what I am saying, look at sections of Brihadaranyaka Upanishad where the great Maitrayi poses questions about "nature of Brahmin", to the great sage Yagyavalkya.

Is it ok for ladies to chant or play the Sri Suktham / Durga Suktham on a musical instrument? I've recently learned Durga Suktham but a few people were advising me against chanting it without proper initiation.

  11. Understand the meaning of the mantra and focus on the divine. This mantra is chanted for desire to have a beautiful and good wife.

I am chanting this mantra for the past 4-5 months

Patnim Manoramam Dehi Manovritanusarineem, Tareneem Durgasamsar Sagarasye Kulodbhavam.

While chanting this mantra do I need to bring any changes in my way of living. Are there any do's and dont's?

I don't smoke, drink or eat non veg. Anything else I need to do?

Can someone please guide me in this regard?

  12. Durgasansara - There is an inherent a sound and 'n' is correct. Also why do you have an 'e' at the end it's Sagarasya. Hope this helps.

Can someone please tell me if the following mantra is correctly written. I want to check whether I am pronouncing it correctly or not

Patnim Manoramam Dehi Manovritanusarineem, Tareneem Durgasansar Sagarasye Kulodbhavam.

It'll be great if someone can point be to the Sanskrit version of this mantra.

The confusion I have is that, at some places it is written Durgasansar while at some other places it is written Durgasamsar

    Please guide me. Thank You.

  13. No whatever you do, don't alter the mula mantra:

Add swaha after the Namah . To pronounce use the rule of sandhi and pronounce it as:

NamasSwaha. (Replace the (h) by half (s)). Hope this helps.

I amnt really sure about the Laxmi Mula Mantram. Looks you have got that right. And if you want to perform the Havanam then .....yes as you rightly said add that Swaha instaed of Namah. But I think you also need to do the chandassu before the mulamantra. It says about the Rishi and chandassu. Please cosult learned people for this. Wrongly doing Mulamantram or Veda swahakaram isnt acceptable.

  14. The gayatri mantra chant is wrong, also it's not meant to be chanted this way:

First rule is one needs to chant Gayatri mantra dependent on the shakha that you belong to. For instance Gayatri is chanted differently in Yajurveda Taittiirya shakha compared with Gayatri in Samaveda Kauthuma shakha. Also, chant should not be set to any external music because Gayatri being a vedic mantra the swara (Udatta, Anuddata and Swarita) are specified in the mantra itself. Finally, Gayatri is a sacred mantra which the Guru will always advice the disciple to chant silently. Hope this helps.

  15. Ghana patha or vikruti patha is chanted at the end of some long(er) mantra patha or a stotra. The mantra patha or what you refer to as simple patha should be always chanted (if you are offering a prayer), you can follow it up with the ghanapatha. For example, if you are doing Shiva Abhisheka

Assuming sankalpa, prokshana etc has already been done..you will start with:

    Laghu Nyasa

    Nyasa

    Dhyanam

    one paragraph of Chamakam

    Rudram

    Chamakam

    Purusha Suktam

    Durga Suktam

    Pancha mukha Shiva mantram

    Ghana patha

    Shanti Mantras (Atleast 5)

then you are done. Notice the Ghana patha is before the shanti mantra and after all other suktas which are chanted in mantra patha style.

    Hi,

I have been chanting vedic mantras (like- Gayatri, Maha-Mritunjaya etc.) daily for the last few years and I feel a positive effect on me. Recently, I learned how to do Ghanapatha (1-2-2-1, 1-2-3-3-2-1, 1-2-3 and so on...). Now I feel confused-

(1.) if I should continue my simple chanting style

OR (2.) I should chant those vedic matras in GHANPATHA style

OR (3.) I should do both a little.

Please suggest me what will be most benefiacial for my sprititual growth. Tell me more about GHANPATHA and its effect if you please.

  16. Varuna is the devta for water and there are many verses in Rig veda devoted to Varuna e.g. mandala: 1 sukta: 24 Richa: 6-15 . Rig veda is written in a manner so that it identifies the devta or devta(s) for the verses.

BTW, the most common mantra is the prokshana mantra:

    Aapo Hishtha Mayah Bhuvasta ...

thanks a lot for the reply sir

what kind of mantra is this?

"Om bhuur bhuvaha swaha, tat savitur varenyam,

Bhargo devasya dheemahi, dheeyo yo naha prachodayaat."

and what are mantras for worship water?

  17. Vedic chants are dependent on swaras than chandas. The sthula definition of chanda is that they tell you the no. of syllables in a pada. Also, not all vedic anuvakas are set to a chanda, it depends on the shakha (Shakalya shakha of Rigveda - all verses are set to some or other chanda). However for Taittiriya shakha in samhita only mantras are set to chanda, the Brahmana portions are chanda free. Like I wrote earlier this is very sthula or gross definition of Chanda. They have very deeper meaning and in yajurveda there are verses describing the nature of chandas and there releation to God and/or the yaga. Hope this helps.

    Respected All,

    Namaskar

Can anyone guide me and teach me the different chhandas (like gayatri, tristup etc. etc. ) to chant vedic mantrs. I will remain ever grateful.
