    Cn you kindly explain about this.Though i have got little bit clarity about it

    but i would love if someone can express this more explicitly.... and make us understand..

    What is the difference between Arudha of 6th house and 6th house fomr Arudha lagna.... Infact for any house how to use it....like A5 and 5th house from AL.....

    How to use and understand them separately...

    I mentioned about considering planet from previous house in case of when planet is retro....coz being retro it does tend to give result from previous house....that is why retro is so crucial coz it ends up effetcing around 8 houses in case it has got 3 aspects like jupiter, sat or mars...

    I will try to give a general idea about awastha...

    Bala(infant), Kumara(youthful), Yuva(adoloscent),vridha(advanced or old) and mrita(deceased)....

     

    Now further these awasthas are divided into sub-awasthas...

    Their results as per their awastha .. you can compare them to human himself and you will understand how to apply them in astrology.....

    Like mrita.....wont be of much use even if in high exhaltation......

    Very well said . It is true and infact if you take in that case ashtakavarga also it wont be sensible to apply that straight away without considering its palcement anf aspect...Like a vridh awastha of planet with with strong shadbala and strong BAV will not give as good as result as well aspected , well placed ,strong shadbala and good BAV will give..

     

    As it is said all this go hand in hand...

  5. Please swpnil..I have mentioned this many times this in other forum and here also that please dont do astrology of bits and pisces.....

    If you wanna ask something ask that with what you u suffering and if you want technical detaisl.. ask for technical details.....this especially goes when chart belongs to the person like you in this case..what happens is you tend to get biased when u looking at your own chart...and you actually going from one end to another... why u asked about sade satti when it is not there and how come you think vargottam of 0 degree will make a difference... Kindly explain...

    I have not seen this chart in detail but will mention about few things you have mentioned about. I this chart sat is yogakarka and placed in 6th house exhalted.. and deb in D-9 and placed with jup in D-9 and with mars in D-1... sat is AK nd so on....

     

    Sade satti wont be so bad BUT it will coz a type of frustration coz of useless obstacles which will coz delay though NOT stopping WORK but will DELAY...the work..

     

    I think last phase of sade satti shud be something this native shud take care of though many will say that about 2nd phase but i will conern 3rd phase to be more full of tension will coz him/trouble.....

     

    But this native wont have much of trouble opther than frustration and this will get elevate coz of his moon.....

    I will try to put few points here.

     

    First of all saturn is placed in 7th house and is retro of very low degree thus we can consider it to effect its previous house more... and one of the best thing is rahu in less than 2 degree with 7th lord and both of them represent quick or things in shoprt duration but been placed with sun this also shows something better...

    thus was thins something like "CHAT MANGANI PAT VIVAH"......i mean very less duration between settlling of marriage and things start getting worked out.... and early mariage also as per their belief coz of mercury but again palvcement of sun should also be considered thus we can cum down to somewhere things got quite sure before geting into mariage...this also gets confirmation in D-9.....

    Rahu-mercury aspect does give a surety of quick thing...Also aspect of rahu on 5th lord again gives surety of an affair and may be with some one of rather lower caste/background...

     

    If this is girls chart than there r quite a chance of having intercaste affair...Please mention the gender of native too

     

    Presense of saturn in 7th house of both D-1 and D-9 will give settlement in marriage litle bit late(with this idea of getting married)...Though later on marriage will get more settled and definetely much better but initial stage will be tough and would have required lot of effort....

    kindly view my horoscope and u may find saturn is in the 4th pada of vishaka(jup) sar and is it beneficial being in pushkar navamsa. It is within 2.20 degree in scorpio. I have read somewhere if any planet is in pushkar navamsa it is very strong and should behave favourably. What is ur opinion.

    You r asking all personal questions in form of technical question.The opinion u r talking about is general idea about venus bhukti in sat or whatever it is ..If it would have been so easy we all goto uttarakalamitra and BPHSn and according to different positions of planter read what it meand and what is going to happen....I think rather than asking what this mean and what that mean .. ask question or query which is concerning you.. it will make task of person who is answering you easier...Now if you gonna ask what is meaning of so and so lagna and wat makes difference if raashi is so and so.. and then end up concluding urself what will happen.......

     

    So i will advise you .. you better think of question which is concerning you and trait of urs which is important or irritating to you and then ask question....

  9. Rightly said by webyogi ji, I will say that specially about jupiter's aspect.eve if it is not so strong its aspect on 7th house (or 7th lord) wil coz marriage in its own caste.... Its aspect counteract all other combinations almost....

     

    It is mentioned by BV Raman ji and i hav found thi strue in many cases that 2-12 of rahu/Venus does result in marriage to other aste and if this has anything to do with 5th house or lord it will result in an affair with other caste.......

    5-9 of mars and Venus also can add on to this....this also is a strong indication....

    Thank and its very well explained deepa ji..One thing i would like to ask.. When to time that native is gonna come back home or gona leave the foreign land.

     

    Generally it is said that end of that dasa in which he has gone like dasa of 3rd lord or 12th lord will end native shud come back home but this generally never happens.

     

    So can everyone of you put when we suppose to come back from foreign land....

    You are right this view ALSO exists that fixed raashi will lead to 3rd house as badhak.. But since coolgimmy was willing to know about difference and how to differentiate in particular lagna or situation it is better idea to clarify how to approach..when same planet is giving both results and playing part of 2 important roles.....then how to understand.....

    Which badhak is to be considered is bit controversial....

    I hope you would not mind me jumping in between you and webyogi ji :-) I wwill try to explain about this......

    Badhakesh is more about badha or obastacle since badhkesh originates from badhaka raashi thus for leo lagna it will be aries not scorpio....

    Then badhakesh is placed in its own house that also in kendra making it further strong and thus positive becoming part of pillars of life...Though if you look from raashi dasa point of view(generally chara raashi dasa) you shud be more cautious of aries dasa rather than scorpio also coz mars is placed in scorpio....

    Jupiter is retro and of not very high degree thus it will giv effect of being placed in 4th house also making 4th house mroe stronger though not very coz of being retro....

    One of the major FACT is placement of saturn in 12th house to badhakesh this could have been drastic.... but again it is placed in it exhalted house thus reducing its negativity and adding further force......

     

    Now secondly mars is yogakaraka.....which is means "coz of materializing of yoga"... Its purity is repeatedly mentioned by many in modern as well as ancient times....

     

    Even if a planet is badhak and yogakarka placed in its own house and having little effect of natural benefic of first degre its basic quality of manifesting of yoga will get enhanced though being badhak it will not loose its whole proprty of being badhak thus it will coz some type of OBSTACLE while work related to religion or performing any sankalp or construction of temple and so on...... and in other fields also but obstacle will be more just less duration and less intensity as compare to its force which native will get to get the task complete.....

    this is indeed a very interesting topic to make a discussion coz people do make it soud more horrible then it is ....

     

    I generally i found this yoga to effetc more of native's mind and make him biased about his decision and his thought process. which actually is quite faulty as per general point of view..

    they dont realise that what they r thinking to do or planning to do is MORALLY not right and thus they shud reconsider it ..

     

    As it is mentioned by few that what actually happens coz of this yoga is that people do immoralistic things and they end up paying for it GENERALLY directly of indirectly and end up blaming word for this.......

    So basically it does makes native's ind quite narrow and biased...

  14. It seems that you give more importance to Arudha Lagnas(Special Jaimini Lagnas) in

     

    vargas than the usual Asc. for that particular varga. Going by this, can i say that A7 &

     

    AL in D9 are to be given importance for marriage/relationship issues. A4 & AL in D4

     

    for House Matters, i.e planets in dusthanas to A4 in D4 and badly placed wrt AL in D4

     

    can cause change of residence.

    Each lagna has a specific purpose. I give importance to arudha lagna and special lagnas

     

    of Parasara, but I give importance to normal lagna also.

     

    For example, if I were to guess your career (assuming the D-10 you gave to be

     

    accurate), I would look at 10th from *lagna* and noting that 10th lord Mercury is in 8th in

     

    Aries, I would predict an uneasy and dynamic career in high-tech software, logic and

     

    analysis.

     

    Lagna is satya peetha (Truth) and arudha lagna is maayaa peetha (illusion). Your status

     

    (e.g. powerful, weak, boss, servant) is an illusion, but your nature (nice, dominating,

     

    scholarly) is the truth. Influences on lagna in D-10 show your nature and influences on

     

    AL in D-10 show your status.

     

    The 10th house from lagna shows the karma (action, i.e. work done in career). If you do

     

    logical and analytical work (because 10th is in Gemini), it is the truth. But workplace and

     

    its status are an illusion and they are seen from the arudha pada (maya/illusion) of 10th

     

    house.

     

    If one understands what houses and their arudha padas stand for, one will realize that

     

    the two are not mutually exclusive and that they are equally important.

     

    DaraPada

     

    Can you please brief about Darapada?

    A7: Arudhapada of the seventh house is also called the DARAPADA and is used to

     

    determine the sexuality of the individual. It is the place from where the native comes

     

    across members of the opposite sex and is physically attracted towards them.

     

    Upapada

     

     

     

    I have a continuing interest in Sanjay's explanation of the Upapada. Some time ago,

     

    Sanjay explained that the Upapada and its second were actually opposites, with the

     

    Upapada being the beginning of married life, and the second being the end of it. I also

     

    recall Sanjay's advise that one should look at where Ketu is located relative to the

     

    Upapada, since it is a first rate benefic. Sanjay, in addition to Frank's questions, I have

     

    another one that's related. If Ketu behaves in this manner (i.e. as a benefic), what is the

     

    significance of Ketu when it's placed within the Upapada?

    Fortunate is the man who is to be guided in the Divine path by his spouse. That is the

     

    meaning of Ketu in Upapada. Ketu gives Kulasya Unnatim in Upapada and the family

     

    rises. Spouse is very spiritual, especially after 43 years, but can be whimsical and will

     

    also have other characteristics seen in Sadhu's. Unless Darapada aspects Upapada, the

     

    sexuality will not be the focus of marriage.

     

    Darapada and Upapada

     

    REPLY BY PT.SANJAY RATH FOR A QUESTION ON DARAPADA AND

     

    UPAPADA

     

    This difference between the darapada and the Upapada is to be examined in the

     

    Divisions as well. For example, the Darapada indicates all PARTNERS. The first is

     

    spouse your spouse for life and the second is Your bed partner (s) depending on the

     

    level of promiscuity in the chart. The third is the Business and partners. Thus, the first

     

    two are seen from the Navamsa whereas the last is seen from the Dasamsa in addition

     

    to the Rasi chart. If the readings of the rasi and Navamsa/ dasamsa as the case maybe

     

    are the same, then the event will surely happen. If there is a doubt, then the reading of

     

    the divisional chart shall prevail.

    Along the same lines, one can say that darapada (arudha pada of 7th house) in

     

    D-24 (chart of learning and intellect) shows one's partners in intellectual activities

     

    and darapada in D-20 (chart of religious and spiritual activities) shows one's

     

    partners in religious activities.

     

    You have darapada in Pisces in D-24 and D-20. It is occupied by Jupiter in D-24.

     

    These may be the reasons for your association with ISKCON swamis and other

     

    religious people in the matter of intellectual and religious activities. Darapada in

     

    Pisces with Jupiter in it, in D-24, can show intellectual association with religious

     

    people or people learned in traditional sastras or people with Pisces lagna or

     

    people with a strong Jupiter. (We two havelagna and 3 planets in same rasis in

     

    D-24 and I also have the same combination in D-24. So I may also have

     

    intellectual association with similar people.)

     

    To give another example, Nehru had Venus (with 5 bindus in a sign with 35

     

    bindus!!) in darapada in D-24 and hence he had intellectual association with

     

    refined, diplomatic and cultured people represented by Venus.

     

    A client who is a journalist by profession - he was nominated for the Pulitzer once

     

    - has Sun with 6 bindus in Cancer in darapada in D-24! This shows intellectual

     

    association with art loving politicians and people in the high society.

    That is truly brilliant. I thought that none would ever get that about the D-20 Chart

     

    of mine. You have again proved your mettle. Do you recall that once i mentioned

     

    that Jupiter in my chart represents Sri Jagannath Mahaprabhu. During Leo Dasa

     

    Pisces antardasa, I traveled to Puri and had many beautiful days at Puri.

     

    The problem is that most people take Jupiter to mean Lord Siva or Indra blindly.

     

    This is not correct. Jupiter represents the Kula and Ista devata first. I am a

     

    Brahmin from Puri and Jupiter will represent My Guru's, Sri Jagannatha (Ista

     

    Devata) and Sri Somanath (Shiva) (Kula devata) when considered with the

     

    Devata karaka, Atmakaraka and Amatyakaraka respectively.

     

    Darapada

     

     

     

    Could you please clarify this fine point. Do you find Darapada in the Rashi chart (in my

     

    case it would be my 10th House with Saturn, Rahu in Gemini) and look at where Gemini

     

    is in Divisional charts or do I find the Darapada in each Divisional charts individually

     

    and judge them?

    You find darapada in EACH divisional chart treating it as a rasi chart. Darapada shows

     

    partners in general. In rasi/navamsa, it can show bed partners. In dasamsa, it can show

     

    business partners and colleagues in career. When Sanjay mentioned these points, I was

     

    saying that darapada in D-24 shows partners in the pursuit of knowledge and darapada

     

    in D-20 shows partners in spiritual progress.

     

    10th house from Arudha Lagna

     

     

     

    I know that any planet in the 10th from Lagna is good for the native in giving material

     

    success. Isn't this true with their placement in the 10th from Arudha lagna. This is with

     

    reference to your mail saying that retrograde Saturn in the 10th from AL cause

     

    hindrances to material success.

    Not with a malefic, even if he is the lord of Arudha Lagna. In the case of a minister of the

     

    Delhi Government having Kanya (Virgo) lagna with Saturn in exaltation in the second,

     

    and the AL in Capricorn, with the advent of Saturn dasa he was accused of having illicit

     

    relations and a child from a servant. He also broke his leg. I advised Rudrabhishek and

     

    pacification with the Mritunjaya mantra (Parasara) and he came out of the mess.

     

    In the case of Dr. Murli manohar Joshi present Minister (Cabinet-HRD) in GOI, Jupiter is

     

    in the 8th house in Virgo (Lagna is Aquarius). Everybody said that bad days were ahead,

     

    whereas I predicted that he will become a senior minister and will also have an excellent

     

    reputation due to Jupiter being in the 10th house from Arudha lagna (in Sagittarius).

     

    These predictions have become true and the reasons are also clear.

     

    3rd from Arudha lagna

     

     

     

    What is the reasoning behind 3rd from AL showing the place of death, in my chart 3rd

     

    from AL is Sagittarius which is the lagna itself with Mercury, which is a maraka and also

     

    Maheshwara for the chart, so does that make Sagittarius and Mercury killers in my chart.

    The 3rd sign from AL shows place of death. The planets in it or aspecting it by Rasi

     

    Drsihti show the cause of death. What is the logic behind this? Arudha Lagna represents

     

    the body. The 3rd from it is the 8th from the 8th, thus showing the end of life or the

     

    causes thereof. The 3rd from Jupiter is indicative of the spouse's death circumstances.

     

    The 3rd from the stronger of Sun and Venus shows the same for father, the 3rd from the

     

    stronger of Moon and Mars for mother. So the Sthira Karakas have to be used.

     

    Jaimini also explains more rules:

     

    Look at the 3rd and 8th from AL as well. Usually the 3rd will determine death, but if the

     

    8th is stronger then 8th one. Look at the Navamshas ocuppied by the planets conjoining

     

    these houses. These are called death inflicting Navamshaas, and they or the 2nd or 6th

     

    from them may give a clue to the cause and circumstances of death. this is all given in

     

    the Upadesha Sutras.

     

    I just looked the chart of a Tuberculosis patient, who has Moon, Mars and Jupiter in

     

    Pisces in the 3rd from AL. This is a sure combination for death due to Tuberculosis and

     

    Pneumonia. Moon points to pulmonary diseases, Mars to operations and Jupiter to

     

    vomiting or throat choking. But Pisces is a benefic sign showing a nice place for death

     

    (maybe a holy place as the person is a devotee of Krishna), and Jupiter shows

     

    awareness at the time of death. Besides that Jupiter in Pisces is conducive to Moksha.

     

    3rd from Arudha lagna

     

     

     

    I follow the logic about the 8th house (transformation death) but not sure if you explained

     

    the reason for 3rd house. How does Parashara explain?

    3rd is the Pada for the 8th i.e. 8th from the 8th and will give the place of death. This is

     

    seen from Audha Lagna. Jaimini gives a lot of details about this. For example the AL of

     

    Mahatma Gandhi was in Cancer and the third from this is Virgo (Garden) with the Sun

     

    (Small firearms etc.) in it. He was assassinated while strolling in the garden with a bullet

     

    from a gun. Thus the teachings of Parasara and Jaimini are right.

     

    Upapada compatibility

     

     

     

    Regarding upaPada matching, I suppose matching means both upaPada lords have to be

     

    friends. Do SamaSaptama upaPadas fine?? Can we consider temporary friendship also

     

    (planets with four rasi's on either side).

    Upapada compatibility means that the Upapada in one chart should be in

     

    trines/opposition to the LAGNA of the other chart and Vice versa, meaning the Lagna of

     

    one chart should be in trine/opp. to the UPAPADA in other chart. If they are in trines/opp

     

    to each other, then an arranged marriage may be suspected, but if the real Upapada

     

    matching is not there, it won't work in the log run. If the Upapada in one chart is in

     

    trines/opp/ to the ARUDHA LAGNA of the other chart, then the marriage is based only

     

    on external things, like the groom is old but rich, and the bride wants his money, etc.

  15. 6. Analyze the different houses from it (i.e take the house as Lagna).For example he 2nd

     

    from it will show the Phala, the 3rd the relations, the 4th the place, the 5th the

     

    consequences, the 6th the enemies, the 7th the partners, the 8th the longevity, the 9th

     

    the dharma, the 10th the karma, the 11th the gains, the 12th the losses connected to the

     

    significations of that house. E.g. lord of any house in the 12th from it may bring the

     

    decrease of the results of that house. Please also take into consideration that 3rd and

     

    8th give life to it, whether 2nd and 7th give death.

     

    This way of analysis may be extended to any house, Arudha, etc.

     

    QUESTION 7.Do you look for yogas taking the arudha lagna in question

     

    as a lagna?

     

    ANSWER 7.Yes, there's a possibility to do this, same as from Surya Lagna,

     

    Chandra Lagna, Varnada etc. and other special Lagnas, taking into consideration the

     

    properties of that type of Lagna.

     

    QUESTION 8. Say looking at arudha lagna in D12 chart, do you take it as

     

    lagna and look at the whole chart as such?

     

    ANSWER 8.Yes, you may do that, and this will show how others perceive of you

     

    in relation to your parents.

     

    QUESTION 9. The same for A9? take it as lagna and analyse the chart as

     

    such?

     

    ANSWER 9. Same. Please also consider Narasimha's mail on Residence on the

     

    VA list.

     

    I have one more question to ask regarding the aruda and its interpretation.

     

    If a Planet is a functional malefic with respect to lagna but is owning a quadrant/trine

     

    wrt AL. How do you interpret the effects of the said planet. wrt lagna the effects can be

     

    bad or mixed , however wrt AL it is supposed to be a RY. Does it mean that the said

     

    planet will be a good benefactor in the eyes of the world while in reality it may not be so?

    Correct. You're on the right path.

     

     

     

    What does the arudha mean? I'm aware of the Arudha padas, being used to determine

     

    the Maya and illusion of the world, but in simple terms this does confuse me.

    Lagna shows the true self and arudha lagna shows the perceived self. It shows how the

     

    world perceives a person.

     

    Let us take the 5th house, for example, which rules intelligence and success in

     

    competition. Whether you are intelligent or not relates to your true self and the 5th house

     

    from lagna shows it. But success in competition is a measure of your intelligence in the

     

    view of this world. These measures are simply an illusion. A person considered by the

     

    world as smart may not be that smart and the world may not realize the

     

    intelligence of a really smart person. This world is constantly under illusion and we form

     

    impressions about people that need not be correct. Arudha lagna shows this. If you want

     

    to judge a person's success in competition, you should prefer arudha lagna to lagna, as

     

    it is related to the illusion of the world.

     

    Now the issue is: what is reality and what is an illusion? I do not think I can teach that to

     

    you. This realization should come to you on its own.

     

    I can teach this hundred times, but one will correctly understand this only when it is in

     

    one's destiny. But I will try again. Try to think about it after reading.

     

    Lagna shows the true self. Houses from lagna qualify it. Arudha lagna shows perceived

     

    self (the image of the self in this world) and houses from it qualify it.

     

    Arudha pada of nth house shows the things based on which the world forms an

     

    impression about the matters of nth house. We form an impression about one's

     

    happiness from vehicles based on the vehicle he owns. If one owns a BMW, we think he

     

    is happy. If one owns a Toyota Tercel, we may think that he is unhappy. Based on how

     

    good (supposedly) a car one owns, we conclude how happy one is. That is simply an

     

    illusion.

     

    One's true happiness from vehicles is shown by the 4th house from lagna (in D-16, the

     

    chart of vehicles and comforts). One's car is shown by A4 (arudha pada of 4th) in D-16,

     

    as one's car is the thing based on which the world forms an impression about one's

     

    happiness from vehicles. If A4 is strong and 4th is weak, one has a supposedly good car

     

    but unhappy. If A4 is weak and 4th is strong, one has a supposedly bad car, but happy.

     

    When you take a divisional chart and a house, understand its true meaning. Understand

     

    which matter it shows. Then try to come up with the thing based on which the world

     

    forms an impression about that matter. That thing will be what the arudha pada of that

     

    house shows!

     

     

     

    With regard to lagna and Arudha lagna, I'm a little unclear on the following written by

     

    Sanjay and mentioned by you also:

     

    Lagna is the seat of truth and exposes the physical layer, while arudha lagna is the seat

     

    of illusion and shows the materialistic layer of life and perceptions.

     

    To me, there is little difference between the physical layer, and the materialistic layer.

     

    Can you explain how to differentiate?

    The word "physical" that I used doesn't exactly describe it. Lagna shows true self and

     

    arudha lagna shows perceived self. Arudha lagna (AL) has to do with "maya" or illusions

     

    of this world. I have already given a couple of examples.

     

    Whether one is intelligent and sharp has to do with true self (lagna), whereas AL is the

     

    best to see whether one is perceived as a sharp person or not. Success in competitions

     

    and fame are things that measure inherent abilities (of true self) with the yardsticks of

     

    this world. So they have to do with perceived self and AL is better. This is why I suggest

     

    5th from lagna for intelligence and 5th from arudha lagna for fame and success in

     

    competitions.

     

    The 9th house shows foreign residence and also fortune. Foreign residence is not a

     

    matter of illusion or perception. If one lives far away from his birthplace, it is the truth and

     

    it has to do with true self. On the other hand, whether one is fortunate or not is based on

     

    the illusions and perception yardsticks of material world and AL is more important.

     

    Material prosperity (like money) may have to do with both true self and perceived self,

     

    but perceptions are perhaps more important. I have seen 1st, 2nd and 11th from AL to

     

    be more useful when judging Sudasa (dasa used for money), for example. If 8th from

     

    lagna contains 11th from AL, one may work hard (physical self under strain) and

     

    increase bank balance (material gains) during the Sudasa of that sign.

     

    Whether one has the happiness of a vehicle or not has to do with true self. But whether

     

    one owns an expensive car or a cheap car is a matter of perceptions and illusions of

     

    material world and so arudha is important.

     

    In essence, arudhas deal with perceptions. They deal with things and concepts that have

     

    to do with perceptions and that come into being because of the many illusions of this

     

    material world. On the contrary, lagna deals with what is real, true and intrinsic.

     

    Narayan's summary is one apt way of saying it. A better way of saying it is: one deals

     

    with what is true and one with illusions. But it is really tough to teach this concept clearly.

     

    One has to 'feel' it and realize it by oneself.

     

    If you are under strong Venusian influence and are too swayed by the "maya" of

     

    materialistic Venus, you may not understand this concept or understand it incorrectly.

     

    What is 'real' and what is 'illusive' can differ from person to person, based on one's natal

     

    and dasa influences.

    Arudha Padas: This terminology refers to how one is “perceived” by others. This is about illusions and maya associations, versus the actual “reality” of a situation - or how we distinguish between what is actually “real”, and what is actually an “illusion” of our material world.

     

    How we judge people is very often guided by our illusions – or the maya of our material world – whereas in reality, the situation may actually be much different than that of our maya perception. So we need to understand how to actually distinguish between the illusions present in our material world versus the actual reality.

    Below is detailed information on Arudha’s and their manner of calculation. Better information I have not found in any book or online. The contributions below were written years back by Sanjay Rath and Narasimha Rao – two very strong advocates for the usage of Arudhas – along with a variety of other very interesting Parashara and Jaimini techniques. Their contributions to the world of Astrology are quite remarkable.

     

     

    EXPLANATION OF ARUDAPADA BY PT.SANJAY RATH

     

     

     

    The term Arudha Pada is also commonly called PADA. Arudha means "MOUNT" and

     

    refers to the IMAGE of a sign falling on another due to "reflection of the rays emanating

     

    from it and being reflected by its lord.

     

    Keeping the reflection in view, the Karaka (Significator) can be taken to be the Moon.

     

    Count from a sign to its lord. Then count as many signs from the lord to arrive at the

     

    ARUDHA PADA. For example, if the Lagna Lord is in the fifth house, then count five

     

    signs from the Lagna lord to arrive at the ninth house. This ninth house becomes the

     

    arudha Pada for the Lagna.

     

    Exception: The Arudha Pada cannot be in the same sign or the seventh from it. In case

     

    this happens, then choose the tenth house therefrom. For example, if the Lagna Lord is

     

    in the 4th house, then the Arudha lagna should be in the 4th from the 4th house i.e. the

     

    7th house. But since this is not allowed, the tenth therefrom should be chosen. The tenth

     

    from the 7th house is the 4th house and the 4th house becomes the Arudha Lagna.

     

    This is also called PADA LAGNA or ARUDHA LAGNA. In this manner we can compute

     

    the Arudha Pada for all the houses and these are called Dhana Pada (2nd), Bhratripada

     

    (3rd), Matri Pada (4th), Mantrapada (5th), Satrupada (6th), Dara Pada (7th), Roga pada

     

    (8th), Bhagyapada (9th), Rajyapada (10th), Labhapada (11th) and Upapada (12th).

    World is swayed by maya

     

    A gentleman I know owns a scooter, with which he is very happy. He owned it for 15

     

    years and he is very fond and proud of it. He rides it to work everyday. I know another

     

    gentleman who owns three fine cars, but not happy with any of them and always hoping

     

    to buy something better.

     

    If you ask someone, "which of these two gentlemen is more blessed with happiness from

     

    vehicles – the one with a scooter or the one with three cars", the answer you are likely to

     

    get is "the one with three cars".

     

    The world has its own perceptions. The material world is swayed by maya or illusion.

     

    The same thing is true for most aspects of life.

     

    If I tell you when you come to me that a central minister just left my home after

     

    astrological consultations, you will probably think that I am a good astrologer. If I tell you

     

    in our first meeting that I don't demand a fixed fee for my astrological consultations and

     

    take whatever clients happily give, you will probably think that I am not a good

     

    astrologer. Is every astrologer consulted by central ministers necessarily good? Can't an

     

    astrologer who does not demand a large fee be good?

     

    If I tell you I did my B.Tech at IIT, you will probably think that I am a smart person. If I tell

     

    you I did my B.Tech at "Varala Venkata Subbayya Engineering College", you will

     

    probably not get the same impression. Is everyone at IIT necessarily smarter than

     

    everyone at the latter college? Probably not. However, we always jump to conclusions

     

    and form ideas and perceptions that are possibly wrong, because we are swayed by the

     

    maya of this material world. Outer trappings matter more than the inner truth.

     

    How people perceive and judge a native is guided by the maya of this material world.

     

    Those perceptions are merely illusions and the reality can be different from them.

     

    The question in front of astrologers is: "How do we distinguish between the illusions of

     

    the material world and the reality?"

     

    The answer to this important question lies in the use of arudha padas, defined by

     

    Parasara and Jaimini.

     

    Computing arudha padas

     

    Arudha pada of a house is computed using the following method:

     

    (1) Rule: Measure the number of signs from the house of interest to its lord. Measure the

     

    same number of signs from the lord. The resultant sign contains the arudha pada of the

     

    house.

     

    Example 1: Lagna is in Gemini and Mercury is in Aries. Let us say we need to find (a)

     

    arudha lagna (arudha pada of the 1st house) and (b) matri pada (arudha pada of 4th

     

    house).

     

    Solution: (a) Lagna is in Gemini. Its lord Mercury is in Aries, i.e., 11th from Gemini.

     

    Count the 11th house from Mercury. It is Aquarius. So arudha lagna is in Aquarius.

     

    (b) The 4th house is in Virgo. Its lord Mercury is in 8th from it. Counting the 8th from

     

    Mercury, we get Scorpio. So matri pada is in Scorpio.

     

    (2) Exception: Arudha pada of a house cannot be in the 1st or 7th from the house. If the

     

    arudha pada computed above falls in the 1st or 7th from the original house for which we

     

    are finding arudha pada, then the 10th house from what was found above becomes the

     

    arudha pada.

     

    NOTE: It may be noticed that arudha pada of a house can only be in the 3rd, 4th, 5th,

     

    9th, 10th and 11th from the house. This is because the illusion is always separated from

     

    the reality.

     

    Example 2: Lagna is in Aries and Sun is in Aquarius. Let us say we need to find mantra

     

    pada (arudha pada of 5th house).

     

    Solution: From Aries lagna, the 5th house is in Leo. From Leo, its lord Sun is in 7th.

     

    Counting the 7th from Sun, we get Leo itself. But arudha pada of a house cannot be in

     

    the house itself or the 7th from it. So we find the 10th from what we found above, i.e.

     

    Leo, and get Taurus.

     

    Example 3: Lagna is in Taurus and Moon is in Libra. Let us say we need to find bhratri

     

    pada (arudha pada of 3rd house).

     

    Solution: From Taurus lagna, the 3rd house is in Cancer. From Cancer, its lord Moon is

     

    in 4th. Counting the 4th from Moon, we get Capricorn (7th from Cancer!). But arudha

     

    pada of a house cannot be in the house itself or the 7th from it. So we find the 10th from

     

    what we found above, i.e. Capricorn, and get Libra.

     

    (3) Caution: Parasara said that Aquarius is owned by Saturn and Rahu both and Scorpio

     

    is owned by Mars and Ketu both. When finding arudha padas of houses falling in these

     

    two signs, we have to consider both the lords. If one of the lords occupies the sign (e.g.

     

    Saturn in Aquarius), the other lord (e.g. Rahu) should be used. Otherwise, we have to

     

    take the stronger lord. Usually a planet in conjunction with more planets is stronger. A

     

    more elaborate set of rules can be found in standard references.

     

    Some scholars (e.g. Sri K.N. Rao) prefer to ignore the exception in (2) above, but both

     

    Parasara and Jaimini mentioned it and it cannot be ignored. Moreover, the following

     

    point may be considered by learned men: Some results are attributed in literature to the

     

    mutual shashthashtaka (6th/8th) positions of arudha lagna and dara pada (arudha pada

     

    of 7th). If this exception is ignored, it can be mathematically proved that arudha lagna

     

    and dara pada will always be in mutually odd houses and mutual shashthashtaka

     

    position of these two padas can never occur! Why did maharshis talk about a

     

    combination that never occurs? The readers are urged not to ignore these exceptions.

     

    There is another thing to remember: Though many scholars find arudha padas only in

     

    rasi chart, they are equally valid in divisional charts.

     

    Use of arudha lagna

     

    Lagna is satya peetha or the seat of truth. Arudha lagna is maya peetha or the seat of

     

    illusion. Both stand for self, but they stand for different shades of self. Lagna stands for

     

    true self and arudha lagna stands for perceived self. Arudha lagna stands for "self, as

     

    peceived by this maya world".

     

    Classics attribute many matters to each house. By using divisional charts, we can

     

    resolve many clashes. For example, 5th house stands for son, mantra, judgment, fame

     

    etc. Using divisional charts, we can see that 5th house in saptamsa stands for son and

     

    5th house in vimsamsa stands for mantra. However, we sometimes have a clash even

     

    after going to the correct divisional chart. For example, intelligence and academic

     

    success are both to be seen in chaturvimsamsa (chart of learning) and the 5th house

     

    shows both.

     

    In such cases, we have to see which matter is seen from lagna and which from arudha

     

    lagna.

     

    We said that Parasara prescribed chaturvimsamsa chart for learning and knowledge and

     

    the 5th house is supposed to show success in competition and fame, as well as

     

    intelligence. An intelligent person usually succeeds in competition, but it is not necessary

     

    always! How do we resolve this clash? We do it by using lagna for one and arudha lagna

     

    for the other.

     

    Lagna shows true self. Whether one is intelligent or not, is related to true self. But

     

    whether one is successful in a competitive examination or not, is related to perceived

     

    self. An intelligent person may fail and one of average intelligence may succeed. It is

     

    related to perceptions. So use lagna as a reference when judging one's intelligence and

     

    use arudha lagna when judging success in competition and fame.

     

    In dasamsa – the chart of achievements in society, i.e. career – the 5th house can show

     

    one's judgment, balance and discretion in career and also professional reputation. Which

     

    should be seen from lagna and which from arudha lagna?

     

    Judgment, balance and discretion are related to true self and they are seen from the 5th

     

    from lagna. Reputation is seen from the 5th from arudha lagna, because it is a part of

     

    maya and related to perceived self.

     

    In this manner, we can choose the correct divisional chart and the correct reference

     

    (lagna or arudha lagna), based on the nature of the matter of interest.

     

    Money is related more to arudha lagna than lagna. This is why Jaimini talked about

     

    planets in the 11th and 12th houses from arudha lagna when talking about savings and

     

    expenditures. We find that Sudasa (rasi dasa) of the 11th house from arudha lagna

     

    invariably improves finances.

     

    If someone has lagna in Aries, arudha lagna in Cancer and Sun in Scorpio, Sun dasa

     

    may bring reputation and worries at the same time. Reputation is given by Sun in the 5th

     

    from arudha lagna and worries are given by Sun in the 8th from lagna.

     

    Thus arudha lagna basically shows the perceptions and illusions of the world about the

     

    native and it is useful for many materialistic aspects of life.

     

    Use of other arudha padas

     

    Just as arudha lagna shows the manifestation of the native (lagna) in this maya world,

     

    arudha padas of individual houses show the manifestation of the house matters in this

     

    maya world. Arudha pada of a house show the maya associated with the matters

     

    signified by that house. Let us denote the arudha pada of nth house by An (e.g. A4 for

     

    matri pada and A5 for mantra pada).

     

    In chaturvimsamsa, the 4th house shows one's learning. A4 shows the maya associated

     

    with one's learning. What can that be?

     

    Well, this maya world places a lot of value on the place and environment in which one

     

    learns. Depending on whether one studied at IIT or "Varala Venkata Subbayya

     

    Engineering College", we jump to different conclusions about one's knowledge. So the

     

    place of study is the illusion associated with learning and it is seen from A4. A very

     

    intelligent and learned friend of mine has extremely strong 4th and 5th houses in

     

    chaturvimsamsa. He wondered why he always studied at mediocre (his word) colleges

     

    and universities, despite such a strong chaturvimsamsa chart. I found A4 in his

     

    chaturvimsamsa chart and it was afflicted by Saturn!

     

    The 4th house in shodasamsa chart shows one's happiness from vehicle. It doesn't

     

    show how expensive the vehicle is. One can be very happy with a Bajaj Chetak and

     

    someone else can be very unhappy with a Mercedes Benz. The 4th house only shows

     

    how happy one is with one's vehicle. It doesn't show whether one owns a scooter or a

     

    Mercedes Benz. That is shown by A4, the maya associated with vehicle. We can see a

     

    lot of details about one's vehicle (physical vehicle!) from A4 in shodasamsa.

     

    Similarly A10 in dasamsa shows the maya associated with karma (action), i.e. one's

     

    workplace! Dusthanas from A10 show bad time for the company one works for or a

     

    change of workplace.

     

    In dwadasamsa, 9th house shows father. It actually shows happiness from father and

     

    relations with him. A9 stands for the maya associated with the concept of father, i.e. the

     

    material existence of father and his status. So A9 can be used as a reference in

     

    dwadasamsa and some inferences can be drawn about father. The 8th house from A9

     

    shows material setbacks to father and the 5th house from A9 shows father's fame.

     

    Understand maya

     

    Illusions of the world about a native are just one side of the maya of this world. There is

     

    another side – illusions of the native about the world and himself. These are shown by

     

    the arudha padas of planets and let us leave them for now.

     

    A mature astrologer can distinguish between reality and illusion and use the correct tools

     

    in his astrological analysis.

     

    One can deduce the meanings of various arudha padas in various divisional charts,

     

    keeping in mind that arudha padas basically show maya associated with various

     

    matters.

    QUESTION 1.I am having trouble understanding how to interpret arudha lagnas

     

    of various houses and charts.

     

    ANSWER 1. 1st principle. Arudha of a house represents the maya (reflection or

     

    illusion) connected to it. Arudhas of the houses will represent others' illusions about your

     

    affairs. Arudhas of the planets, on the other side will represent your illusions about

     

    others (moving entities signified by the planets).

     

    QUESTION 2.What is the difference of arudha lagna in rasi chart and the

     

    other divisional charts?

     

    ANSWER 2. Arudha Lagna is the reflection of the self (how others perceive it). In

     

    D-1 it is the general perception about you, in the other D-charts it is always the

     

    perception in connection with that D-chart. Like AL in D-9 will show what kind of a

     

    husband you will be thought of. AL in D-10 will show how others perceive you in your

     

    career etc.

     

    QUESTION 3.What about Arudha lagna of various houses in rasi, and then

     

    arudha lagna of various houses in divisional charts?

     

    ANSWER 3. Each house has an arudha, which is called Pada as well. To say

     

    that Arudha Lagna of a house is improper. See BPHS and Jaimini Sutram for the names

     

    of the Padas. Arudhas in Rasi chart will represent the Maya connected to the affairs of

     

    the given houses in general terms. Like you can see Upapada (A12) for marriage and

     

    spouse in rasi. This will show how others perceive her as your wife, and this may include

     

    you. However, the real connection will be seen from the 7th house. Going to D-9, this will

     

    more explicitly show how she is perceived in the married relationship. Seeing the UP in

     

    D-10 will show how your colleagues in work will perceive her. In D-20 it will show how

     

    she will be perceived in your religious life, etc.

     

    QUESTION 4. What is the significance of houses from Arudha lagna

     

    compared to arudha lagna of those houses themselves? I.e. difference between

     

    A4 and fourth from arudha lagna in say a navamsa chart?

     

    ANSWER 4. Start with A4 in Rasi, this shows how others will perceive of your

     

    home. 4th from AL will show how others will perceive of your relationship to your home.

     

    In Navamsha A4 will show how others perceive of the home of you and your wife. 4th

     

    from AL in Navamsha will show how others will perceive your and your wife's relation to

     

    your home etc. QUESTION 5.If we are talking about illusions, surely all you need is the

     

    illusion of that house and the house in question, i.e. 4th house, and A4 for its

     

    illusion? Where does 4th from arudha lagna come into the picture?

     

    ANSWER 5.It will indicate how the significations of that house are perceived IN
