About This File

A critical study of the work “Vaimanika Shastra” released by scientists from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 1974. First, the historical aspects and authenticity of the work are discussed. Subsequently, the work is critically reviewed in respect of its technical content. They conclude, "It appears that this work cannot be dated earlier than 1904 and contains details which, on the basis of our present knowledge, force us to conclude the non feasibility of heavier‐than-air craft of earlier times. Some peripheral questions concerning dimensions have also been touched upon."

Richard L. Thompson in his Alien Identities book mentions vimanas esp. in chapter 8. Its section 8.2 is devoted to Vimanika sastra. Although the autor lists critical arguments, he also mentions some vimana characteristics (10 out of 32 secrets to be known by a vimana pilot) which are known from later UFO reports (zig-zag flight, shape changes, etc.) but which according to him couldn't be known at the beginning of 20th century.
