Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

 

We saw in the previous post, how sage vaalmeeki sang pallaaNdu to the lord through his slokam maa nishaadha. Now see another point -

maa nishaadha prathishThaam thvam agamaH saasvatheeh samaah |

yath krouNcha mithunaath Ekam avadheeh kaama mOhitham || 1-2-15

 

krouncha midhunaath = the couple of demons, namely RaavaNa and Mandhodhari; kaama mohitam = that impassioned one raavaNa stole Seethaa;

Ekam = that one, RaavaNa;

Avadhee = you killed oh lord raama - maa nishaadha;

 

[This interpretation is also there].

 

"that matter of desiring seethaa is bad for you, oh raavaNa, and may cost you your life" this kind of advise, was it not given to raavaNa by any one, whom raavaNa will listen earlier before abducting seethaa?

 

That doubt may come who are a bit not conversant with minute details in raamaayaNam.

You turn more pages. Yes, this was given by his own kith and kin. See maareecha talks on that to raavaNa when raavaNa came to maareecha for first time secretly and on way remembering garudan – he also adds this advice [with a sort of message or 'information' for all ages to come], while addressing raavaNa--

 

sulabhaah purushaa raajan sathatham priya vaadhinah |

apriyasya cha pathyasya vakthaa srothaa cha dhurlabhah || 3-37-2

 

meaning: maareecha to raavaNa says, "It is always be easy to get people who talk pleasantly, oh, king, but it is impossible to get such who talk with judgment and give suggestions that may be apparently insipid, but that are recuperative. More so, it is impossible to get listeners of such advises. [3-37-2]

 

Is this not a great truth even today? It is very rare to see people of courage to give such strong advises to the boss or king, and rarer is that breed who listen to such advises. Is it not applicable to corporate or government or even individual families today also?

 

That is what is raamaayaNam – a source to learn life's hard points.

 

Maareecha also adds or says further

api thE jeevitha anthaaya na uthpannaa janakaathmajaa |

api seethaa nimiththam cha na bhavEth vyasanam mahath || 3-37-5

 

meaning: Has this Seethaa, the daughter of Janaka, taken birth to end your life, or what! And because of this Seethaa will there be a great disaster, so to speak! [3-37-5]

 

Dear bhakthaas, now you understand why I took that sree vijayam – vijaya sree – sree has taken birth seethaa to kill raavaNa, more than naaraayaNa as raama – or just they are inseparable – both came together. You all tell me is it raamaayaNam or sree vijayam – what vara naaradha is talking about raama, and vaalmeeki giving 'maa nishaadha' the pallaaNdu to raama.

 

On the eve of sree raama navami I am quite happy to deal the topic of sree vijayam. May that sree seethaa and jaya raama, the 'sarva dhhaari', one who bears all, shower all grace to all bhakthaas on this tamil new year 'sarva dhaari'.

 

Then vaalmeeki continued the reciting as blessed by brahma, and gave the proper introduction, the arrangement of 'kaaNdam – sections', chapters etc. he also taught to kusa and lava. The young boys kusa and lava sang in raama's durbar. All know those stories.

 

Another point here is – raama had the desire to listen his own story thru his sons. Since he heard thru his brothers and others that 2 boys sing raama's story so nicely, and developed desire to listen to it.

 

That itself is the 'ERRam' – 'glory' for raamaayaNam – raama himself heard his own story. Perhaps, this paved the way to another. Raama, having fulfilled that desire of listening his own story, liked to listen that long 'sthOthram' – 'praising' of himself - in next avathaaram of krishNa – sree vishNu sahasra naamam SVSN by bheeshma, - in maha bhaaratham, for already a precedence is set.

 

One small difference – is that raamaayaNam is more a running story, but, praises are there in parts. But later in SVSN, it is an 'out and out' praising only.

 

Here just a cross thought – if there is something wrong in the story, would raama not stop lava and kusa, saying 'hey – this portion is not correct, this is what it should be' – since such correction is NOT there apparently, then what vaalmeeki stated should be correct 100 % - just forget or ignore for a minute about brahma's varam to vaalmeeki - or some such.

 

While hearing his own story - apparently not knowing the two were his own sons. Is it really? Again, here comes that desire to keep himself un-announced - 'aathmaanam manusham manyE' in ample measure.
