Dear All,

Adiyen does not know { & would like to be enlightened} as to what is the pramanam for all these classifications & part permissions.

Saastras specify that One should do 96 Tharpanams every year. This number may vary by 1 02 if we interpolate an English Calender Period of 365 days into a Lunar Calender Year of 365 days.

But, adiyen would like an advice - how & since when the performance of only 4 Sankramana Tharpanams in a year was allowed.

An unintended offshoot is that some or many Karthas have assumed that it is enough to do 4 AMavaasyai Tharpanams also.

Again, adiyen would like to be enlightened of the Pramanams to say " if yo do so & so Sankramana Tharpanam, you need not do that month's Amavaasyai Tharpanam " .

As far as adiyen can see & study the Pramanams, there are NO Exceptions - Sankramana Tharpanam, Amavaasyai Tharpanam have to be done one after the other. There are occasions when we do 3 tharpanams on the same day - if Vaithruthi OR Vyaddeepaadam OR one of the Manwadhi Tharpanams also fall on the same day.

Swamins -   “Deva Pithru Karyaabyaam na Pramathithavyam” ordains the Taittriopanishath – the concluding parts of Krishna Yajur Vedam – in Sheekshavalli. Means that Deva Kaaryams & Pithru Kaaryams should be performed without break & that we must never waver from performing either Deva Kaaryams & Pithru Kaaryams. "

Please spare 16-18 minutes per day at least on those 24 {Amaavaasyai & Sankramana Tharpanams} +16 Mahalaya Paksham days - barest minimum.

September 16 - was such an auspicious day! October 16 will be one more such super auspicious day.

MAY ACHARYAS BLESS ALL SEVARTHIS

This is applicable for other three sankaraman srarthams also, if amavasai coincide then

2 ) For those who perform sankaramana srardham for all 12 months of the tamil year, they will also as usual do only thula sankaramam and will skip amavasai tharpanam on Thula Ravi

3 ) When amavasai coincide with other Tamil Months ( apart from the above four ) also like Vrichika Ravi and Amavasai happen on same day etc , then

First category people will perform Amavasai tharpanam on Vrichika Ravi day etc

Second category will perform Vrichika masa tharpanam, since they perform this for all months ( they need not do amavasai tharpanam on that day ) and etc

Swamins,I would like to add a small note to this. While 96 shrAdhams are specified by shAshtrAs, the shrAdhams fall into 3 broad categories:1. Nityam2. Naimittikam3. KaamyamOut of these Nitya and Naimittika shrAdhAs are mandated by shAshtrAs and if one skips them they accrue sin. Whereas, kAmya shrAdhams such as yugadi, manvadi, arthodaya, mahodaya shrAdhams are performed with some result in mind and hence they become optional for people who are not interested in those fruits. The references for this can be found in multiple texts including pitrumedhasaaram, srivaishnava sadaachaara nirnayam etc...

Since sankramana, uparAgAs, ashtakas, mahAlaya fall under naimittika/ nitya shrAdhams they are not really optional. Some people traditionally do sankramana only for vishuva punya kaalams (4 in a year) and this seems more of a practice having a wide followership and acceptance, rather than having a support of pramaanaas (at least I haven't come across texts which state that people need to at least do only vishuva punya kAla shrAdhams).

Dear Swamins & Ms Jayashree,

All postings are carefully noted.

Adiyen totally regrets his inability to engage in a free wheeling discussion about the efficacy OR correctness OR advisability of performing more than ONE Tharpanam in a given day.

This is NOT a Sadas to decide which system is correct. Let each Kartha follow what he thinks {or is advised} as the best.

Adiyen has been attempting Shannavathi for the past 8 years - without 100% success - at least, 2-3 miss out due to circumstances beyond adiyen's control.

Last year was the peak of inability - both the elder Brother & the Matha passed away - six tharpanams got cut.

Adiyen notes Sri Sudarsanam's quotes - again no arguments. Adiyen got his Niyamanam from HH, then the Srikaryam Swami & consulted the various books by Sarva Shri Rajagopala Ganapatigal, consulted Ganapati Govindachariar - Principal - Srimath Andavan Veda Patasala at Vaduvur before embarking on this Himalayan attempt. ADiyen stands by his views formed after talikg & getting advised by the abovesaid Gnaanis.

Both Vaideeka Sri & Asthika Seva Samaj publish the calendars/ panchangams listing all the Shannavathi Tharpanams - date, Sankalapams etc.,

Those who want to believe the Periyavaals they consulted may follow their advice & perform 4 or 12 or whatever number of Tharpanams as they are advised. No issue at all!!

17-10-2009 is another huge opportunity for adiyen:

Ayippasi Maasa Pirappu, Amavaasyai & Vaithruthi - in that order -

Adiyen is fully aware of the Gnaanis & well read Scholars advising against performing 2 or 3 per day.

With all humility, adiyen does NOT accept this inference - those who want to follow that advice may follow & perform as many Tharpanams as they are advised.

RR Maama,

You are perfectly right in your advice about tarpanams as all sastras and puranas also dictates the same. If our generation people start performing 4, then you can imagine next generation people will zeroin on it. There is still no unity in our Srivaishnavas itself... 1000 people set rules and regulations... There should be one person to unite all Srivaishnavas together. Our sampradayams are truly under threat...
