Self-realization is the process of identifying (attaching to) our true

nature, and therby discarding (detaching from) our false identification

(s).

Will there be a final answer from Swamiji? :).

If it can be described in words it could only be "neti neti". How can

one describe something endless and infinite?

My understanding is that Self-realization is God-realization. When the

little i falls away and we recognize the big I that is in fact one with

God and all creation. It is that state of experiential understanding of

the truth of Oneness, not just intellectual understanding.

Thank you for asking. Begging your tolerane to read a long answer.

As spiritual warriors we pierce the ever-moving heart and mind

directly. Our word-arrows must be true. They are not a shield to hide

behind. We are naked.

Realization is our arrow of truth to engage this never-ending battle

you referred to. The arrow is the same one you use to mark the sand

and say "what then, is beyond this line?"

As a young man I walked across a long field on a narrow road. "How is

it I appear here as a being with 2 legs, standing here? Existence in

this way seems impossible, yet I appear to experience being here."

Later, after he studies a bit, he has the destination of North, and

now all readings on his compass point away from where he actually

is. He can't go anywhere. He did set out to the pole, he is not

wandering around on the equator. Is realization the effort, or the grace?

The biggest fiasco in spiritual life is the concept of a permanent

state of realization. We fall asleep at the wheel again, we lay

down our arms. We forget it is a constant battle and think we won, or

thought we were on vacation.

Nothing works, over and over again, nothing is true. Perhaps our own

desire, that which seemed ar first to be untrue, is what is true.

I have an idea, or read something about realization. Some guru says he

knows what it is. The mind then, projects this concept into the

complete unknown. Like the mars probe, we have to wait for an answer.

I cannot define it, despite a lifetime of contemplation and study. I

can talk about it, but cannot reach into the mind of anyone and pull

it out, like mining a gem in the sand.

This self-limitation, this constant relativity, this cannot be the

end, we think. A-U-M. Realization and Suffering weave in and out like

some infinite cloth.

Pranams.

Swamiji/Mataji, in my humble opinion; Self Realization:

Towards [self-actualizing] in the spiritual life personality comes to

a point to realize that the, "I" in lesser ego as self comes to

fruition in and with the action of the greater "Self". After

realizing this Self, the lesser ego in affect dies to this Self

(Atman), and subsequently becomes the play, the drama, in that the I

in "Self" Realizes that the celestial life is the projection of never

ending state of Pure Intelligence as Self witnessing Self in all

things. Therefore, in the spontaneity of soul interaction, the Higher

nature then simply unfolds its true identity in the life course. And

what the little (self), having the opportunity to "Actualize" into

the purity of true soul and as witness of (Atman) the lesser self

identity comes to Realize its true nature. The Self is Realized as it

recognizes and becomes aware of Self in all things, as Sat Chit

Ananda; Truth, Intelligence and Bliss Absolute.

Swamiji:

No, I cannot define self-realization.

Definitions are mind-stuff used to bolster our ego.

Otherwise, at best; definitions may serve as guideposts in giving

directions.

Beloved Swamiji,

Pranams.

I do not think that self-realization can really be defined but they

are a few songs sung by Beloved ShreeMaa, which to me give a very

good idea of that reality. Songs like - I am That (not This not

That) , Krishna's flute , My Lord and Divine Mother of Bliss.

Thanks for this opportunity Swamiji.

I agree with my sister Kaliananda that it cannot be defined. I was

just recently speaking to another sister about "absolute ideas" that

are shot down the minute we have them. What I mean is that we so

often try to hold on to an idea of what something is or what "right"

is and when we do we have deformed it with our little minds.

if they get shot down the minute you have them, you are doing pretty

good! pity the disciplined fool who holds on to them for year after year.

Revered Maharaj,

To define Self realization, I would turn to Sri Ramakrishna, who,

quoting from a song, sang, "When shall I be free? When 'I' shall

cease to be".

To me, it is the naked Truth---Digambara---left standing eternally

when all of the all-to-human has been stripped away.

With eternal pranams,

Tanmaya

"Can you define Self-Realization?"

Jai Maa, beloved Swamiji and all,

i have struggled and struggled to begin to answer this question...but

everytime i start to type, i freeze. But here is a very feeble

attempt: "Self" Realization is waking up..to be completely dissolved

in the Unity of Wisdom..."Isness"..Pure Consciousness.

This description is still very weak, i know, and is but a mere

reflection at best. i love the story Thakur Ramakrishna tells about

the "Salt Doll" who went to measure the depth of the Ocean. Who was

there left to describe the experience? :<) i bow to those who are

Realized and those who are striving to realize.

Your sister slowly dissolving,

Namaste' Swamiji...

I believe Self-Realization to be when the illusion of separation

dissolves and One is all there is.

Namaste Swamiji,

It is a simple expression and not the ramified nature that we experience.
