Guest guest Posted November 4, 2003 Report Share Posted November 4, 2003 The sanskrit definition of puja is that which gives birth to merit.When we engage in puja we give birth to awareness within us.We invite divine vibrations to take birth within us as well as within the creation. In the highest sense consciousness worships consciousness. SHE worships HERSELF. When Shree Maa does puja she worships the consciousness which exists within each and every atom of existence. On a more practical level in the beginning of the puja we prepare to meet our beloved. In the same way we would prepare our home for a guest we prepare our home,our body,our temple. We set the mood by filling our senses with light and incense. We place flowers around the house because SATYAM, SHIVAM, SUNDARAM. Truth, consciousness and beauty. When we see beauty it reflects true consciousness.We ring bells to chase away any enimical energies which might keep us from our beloved. We purify our mouth, hands, and seat, so that everything we touch and say will be filled divine vibrations in anticipation of serving our beloved with the highest respect. (We will keep this vibration within when we serve the world in our daily interactions.) After we have prepared and purified our home we invite our beloved to take a seat within the temple of our heart and we sit together in blissful silence for as long as our merit will allow. How much did we give? How much do we love? How much attention did we pay to our beloved? to our actions? This is the merit.The more we give the more we get. As you sow so shall you reap. The more attention and love we give the longer we can sit in this divine union. (In the Chandi, Verse 8 page 82 The Praise That Removes the Pin it says,"As one gives, so in return does one receive, and by no other means is SHE pleased. This is the form of the pin by which it has been bound by the Great God.) After some time when we come out of this union, all we want to do is sing and offer love to our beloved guest. This love takes on the form of various articles, each has a specific meaning and purpose. We wash our beloved's feet and offer food as well. When our puja is complete and we get up from our seat we continue to carry the awareness and love of this blissful union with us through out our daily activites. So that all of our actions are puja.
