God/dess is not out there but IN HERE. However, I remember reading something in the Devi Mandir website where someone said something to the same effect to Shree Maa, i.e. God/dess is inside, so what's the point of worshipping a picture on the altar? Shree Maa simply asnwered: "To remind us of who we are." Indeed, one can always use some reminding! And besides, puja is so much fun! Bells, lights, flowers, incense, water, yantras... :-) I like to see the picture on the altar not as a picture, but rather a mirror. I've made made God so much of my world that doing puja to a diety on an alter sometimes can make God feel far away, like I'm affirming God is outside of me and that doesn't feel right to me. So, doing every action as though I'm doing it with God in me has brought me the most peace. It's simple and not as fancy, but I like it that way.
