Tomorrow will be the first day of the fall Navaratri. For those who

fast the last food will be Thursday Sep, 25 and we will fast through

Oct, 2. Today was the Mahaloya or the great dissolution where we

dissolve everything outside of our spiritual perception. We also

performed the Shraddha ceremony where we honored all of our departed

ancestors. Have a happy Navaratri! Jai Maa.

daily thru this festival.

Thank you Dilipji for such a lovely contribuition(covering Devi Mandire books)

For a start could you share the method of fasting as prescribed (if any) in Devi Mandir books.

Sarada Ma have shared the starting of fast .It would be good if

somebody could share fasting for navarathri, full moon ,no moon or

ekadashi for start(reference could also be made on other Devi

scriptures)

Thank you ...............

We just asked Swamiji about fasting the other day and he said that

everyone will define what fasting is differently. Swamiji says that

for him fasting means taking only water but others will eat fruits

and nuts or whatever else they need to sustain themselves. Some

people have to work for a living and can't afford to be sluggish so

it all depends on how you want to do it. There isn't a Devi Mandir

book that deals with rules of fasting but there is a great chapter

in the Devi Bhagavatam that discusses the Navaratri and fasting.

Your name alone puts me in nice bliss of that beautiful

enchanting flute player.

I'm not very strict about fasting and my fast involves one full

meal and other time I may take fruit, juice, milk products, ... and I

try to avoid Onion, Garlic, Hingue (english?) as per Srimad Bhagwatam

on that day particularly. Moreover I try to cook my own food or visit

strict veg place (home or retsaurant). I like to do Ekadashi, Ashtami,

etc.. also. But I feel now that if I make a Sankalpa to do fast with

right devotion that's enough Day is not important ... I understand

certain days have more importance than others.

I would like to learn more about it myself ... Jai Maa

regards and best wishes

In chapter 17 of the third book in the Devi Bhagavatam, the

Navaratri is outlined in detail although it only gives a few hints

about food. It says that one should take only one meal on the new

moon before the first day (sacred food, boiled rice with ghee) and

that one Brahmin should be appointed to observe the fast during the

Navaratri. I am going to ask Swamiji to shed some more light on this

subject and I will get back as soon as I have more to share. Jai Maa!
