When advancement of knowledge is applied in the service of the Lord, the whole process becomes absolute. The Personality of Godhead and His transcendental name, fame, glory, etc., are all nondifferent from Him. Therefore, all the sages and devotees of the Lord have recommended that the subject matter of art, science, philosophy, physics, chemistry, psychology and all other branches of knowledge should be wholly and solely applied in the service of the Lord.

 

Art, literature, poetry, painting, etc., may be used in glorifying the Lord. The fiction writers, poets and celebrated litterateurs are generally engaged in writing of sensuous subjects, but if they turn towards the service of the Lord they can describe the transcendental pastimes of the Lord.

 

Valmiki was a great poet, and similarly Vyasadeva is a great writer, and both of them have absolutely engaged themselves in delineating the transcendental activities of the Lord and by doing so have become immortal. Similarly, science and philosophy also should be applied in the service of the Lord.

 

There is no use presenting dry speculative theories for sense gratification. philosophy and science should be engaged to establish the glory of the Lord. Advanced people are eager to understand the Absolute Truth through the medium of science, and therefore a great scientist should endeavor to prove the existence of the Lord on a scientific basis. Similarly, philosophical speculations should be utilized to establish the Supreme Truth as sentient and all-powerful. Similarly, all other branches of knowledge should always be engaged in the service of the Lord.

 

In the Bhagavad-gita also the same is affirmed. All "knowledge" not engaged in the service of the Lord is but nescience. Real utilization of advanced knowledge is to establish the glories of the Lord, and that is the real import. Scientific knowledge engaged in the service of the Lord and all similar activities are all factually hari-kirtana, or glorification of the Lord.

Everyday you give us a healthy dose of His Divine Grace. This is the path for staying on course.

I just want to make a point on this one subject for now. Pyschology.

 

Often devotees will find themselves in need of some professional level counseling and they generally find there is no where to go.

 

Maybe they can get some nice words from the person who has been teaching them from the holy books but they may require something more tailored to their specific needs at that time. But the secular pyschologist will not be able to really tie in their prescribed process of treatment with the practice of sadhana bhakti no matter how much they try or how otherwise accomplished their have become in their field.

 

The answer can only be found in a devotee pyschologist. But can most devotees be trusted with the past shortcomings and trauma's of one's life? I think not no matter how advanced they are supposed to be. Even the so-called big wigs are often seen to gossip and form little cliques. This is poison to not only guru/sisya relationship but also to the patient/practioner one as well. There is always an exception but I prefer now to speak of the rule.

 

The inticacies of the mental/emotional state are very complex and hard to understand. Even very trained practioners disagree amongst themselves but still they have learned alot. But they lack understanding of basic metaphysical principles. Most still consider past life regression to look for traumatic samskaras as voodoo science. They can only help so far.

 

This leaves a large gap in the treatment protocol especially for the sadhaka.

 

This gap must be bridged. This calls for devotee trained and professionaly trained devotee pyschologists.

 

However, presently if a devotee is found to be working in this way as a profession too often they are ridiculed as being a little too in touch with the mundane sphere. This must change.

 

On one hand we say there is no need to reject one's occupation to approach God just dovetail it for Krsna. Then when someone does they are often seen as less committed to sadhana-bhakti.

 

This stifles the growth of the Hare Krsna movement into society at large and I feel is very counter productive, ceratinly for those committed already to Krsna Conscious growth.

 

I see this as a simple bump in the road but still one that must be recognized and smoothed out.

 

Society needs devotee pyschologists. Or in other words all pyschologists should be devotees.
