from Teachings of Lord Caitanya:

"The principal word in the Vedas, pranava omkara, is the sound representation of the Supreme Lord. Therefore omkara should be considered the supreme sound."

"Omkara is the reservoir of all the energies of the Supreme Lord."

"In Bhagavad-gita the Lord has in many places given importance to omkara, (Bg. 8.13, 9.17, 17.24)." (Sorry I don't have the Gita here now)

"'Omkara is the most confidential sound representation of the Supreme Lord.' The sound representation or name of the Supreme Lord is as good as the Supreme Lord Himself."

"In the Mandukya Upanisad it is said that when omkara is chanted, whatever is seen as material is seen perfectly as spiritual. In the spiritual world or in spiritual vision there is nothing but omkara, or the one alternate, om."

"He (omkara) is the beginning, middle and end, and He is beginningless as well. When one understands omkara as such, he becomes immortal. One should thus know omkara as a representation of the Supreme situated in everyone’s heart. One who understands omkara and Vishnu as being one and the same and all-pervading never laments in the material world, nor does he remain a sudra."

"Although He (omkara) has no material form, He is unlimitedly expanded, and He has unlimited form. By understanding omkara one can become free from the duality of the material world and attain absolute knowledge. Therefore omkara is the most auspicious representation of the Supreme Lord."

"Omkara is therefore the ultimate representation of all the Vedas. Indeed, the Vedic mantras or hymns have transcendental value because they are prefixed by the syllable om. The Vaisnavas interpret omkara as follows: by the letter O, Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is indicated; by the letter U, Krishna’s eternal consort Srimati Radharani is indicated; and by the letter M, the eternal servitor of the Supreme Lord, the living entity, is indicated."

hope this helped

AAAAUUUUMMMM

The sound of AUM is very important, because it is the very sound of AUM that makes this Universe run.

The Sound AAAA is the sound representing the beginning of the creation.

The sound UUUU represents its existence and MMMM represents its dissolution.

------------

what are the benifits?

If you chant AUM you will be in sync with the universe and finally know the truth. The AUM has many powers in it, it will make the person who chants be one with the universe.

om purnam adah purnam idam

purnat purnam udacyate

purnasya purnam adaya

purnam evavasisyate

"The Personality of Godhead is perfect and complete, and because He is completely perfect, all emanations from Him, such as this phenomenal world, are perfectly equipped as complete wholes. Whatever is produced of the Complete Whole is also complete in itself. Because He is the Complete Whole, even though so many complete units emanate from Him, He remains the complete balance."

Hare Krishna

There is no Difference between Omkara and Krishna, although you cannot gain spiritual realisation my chanting Omkara by itself in this age, Omkara is esp. meant for when you meditate, but nowadays it very difficult with all its different sitting postures and breathing exercises, the easiest process as recommend by Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu the Most Munificent Incarnation of Lord Krishna is chanting His names:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna

Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Hare Rama Hare Rama

Rama Rama Hare Hare
