personally, i treat mala as i would treat yajnopavita. i was not born a hindu, so i am technically outcaste and have not had the courage to ask swami-ji about taking upayana-sanstha. but, the as far as wearing the yajnopavita goes, sri dandi swami shivananda says that when moving the bowels or taking bath, one should tuck it behind the ears. however, this is not possible with mala. i personally remove my rudraksh when moving the bowels. but, everyone is different. some say that the mala can purify all negativities, so it doesn't matter and can be worn even in such situations. i remove mine out of respect to the mala, and out of a sense of ritual purity. my impurities are my own, and should not be shared with my mala.

om mam male mahamaye sarva shakti svarupini catur vargas tvayi nyastas tasman me siddidha bhava.
