Science Discovers the Physiological Value of Continence

Dr Raymond W. Bernard

Mokelumne Hill, CA: Health Research, 1957

The physiological value of continence

An opinion has gained ground in modern times, not only among the general public, but also among physicians, that the belief in the physiological value of continence belongs to the dark ages of religious superstitions and scientific ignorance, and is incompatible with physiological knowledge. Certain pseudosexologists have exploited this idea to their commercial advantage and have created in the public mind a phobia in regard to continence, which is regarded as a cause of nervous and mental diseases and a positive health danger. On the basis of this belief, physicians and psychoanalysts have looked in continence for the cause of the nervous ailments of youth and have advised young men to visit prostitutes and risk venereal infection as a lesser evil than the assumed hazards of abstinence.

A careful reading should, however, convince any open-minded reader that the above view is false, and that continence per se can never do harm, but is always beneficial; and that when trouble occurs in an individual not practicing normal sex relations, the fault is not continence but some vicarious means of sex expression, excessive nocturnal emissions, etc. In view of the richness of the semen in lecithin, cholesterol, phosphorus and other constituents of nervous and brain tissue it is clear that it is incontinence, or loss of these valuable nerve-nourishing substances which, by promoting undernutrition, is responsible for disturbed functioning of the nervous system and brain, and never true continence . . .

The semen is a viscid albuminous fluid, alkaline in reaction, which is very rich in calcium and phosphorus, also in lecithin, cholesterol, albumen, nucleoproteins, iron, vitamin E, etc. In the ejaculation of the normal man, about 226 million spermatozoa are given off; these are rich in phosphorized fats (lecithin), cholesterol (the parent-source of sex hormones), nucleoproteins and iron. An ounce of semen is considered to be equal in value to sixty ounces of blood, of which it constitutes an extract of some of its most valuable constituents, as far as its vitalizing power is concerned. Dr. Frederick McCann remarks on this point, 'From what has been stated it must be admitted that the spermatic fluid does possess potentialities justifying the belief of ancient writers concerning its vital properties.' . . .

The following are among the many physiological evidences which demonstrate the value of continence:

1. There is a remarkable similarity of chemical composition between the semen and the central nervous system, both being especially rich in lecithin, cholesterin and phosphorus compounds, which would indicate that seminal emissions withdraw from the body substances necessary for the nutrition of nervous tissues.

2. Excessive voluntary seminal losses (through masturbation, coitus, coitus interruptus, and contraceptive practices) are debilitating and harmful to the body and brain.

3. Excessive involuntary seminal losses (through nocturnal emissions, diurnal emissions, spermatorrhea, etc.) are debilitating to the nervous system and may cause neurasthenia.

4. Observations of the immediate effects of the sexual orgasm indicate that it temporarily exhausts the nervous system, and when repeated too frequently leads to chronic nerve-weakness (sexual neurasthenia).

5. Continence is beneficial to the brain (for conserved lecithin from retained semen is a true brain food). Hence some of the greatest intellectual geniuses in ancient and modern times led continent lives. These include Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, Spinoza, Newton, Kant, Beethoven, Herbert Spencer, etc. . . .

Convincing evidence of the benefits of continence and that the assumed 'sexual necessity' is an illusion is afforded by the study of the debilitating effects of sexual orgasm, which are immediate and striking. Though these have been attributed to purely nervous origin, there can be no doubt that they are chiefly due to the harmful effects of the seminal discharge, which involves a sudden withdrawal from the body of calcium, lecithin and other substances necessary for the normal functioning of the nervous system. Havelock Ellis, in his 'Studies in the Psychology of Sex', quotes the observations of Dr. F.B. Robinson on this subject . . . He notes that when a stallion cohabits with a mare for the first time, after a short, vigorous coition, he is apt to fall down in a dead faint, which Robinson traces to brain anemia thus produced. He mentions one case of a mare falling dead immediately after coition. Young bulls frequently faint away after the first connection with a cow, and it is very common to observe a young bull so exhausted that he sneaks off to a quiet corner and lies down for a couple of hours. . . . In the case of the boar, the orgasm rises to such a pitch that the animal seems on the verge of pain, and is usually exhausted for several hours.

Havelock Ellis writes:

'When we have realized how profound is the organic convulsion involved in process of detumescence, and how great the motor excitement involved, we can understand how it is that very serious effects may follow coitus. Even in animals this is sometimes the case. Young bulls and stallions have fallen into a faint after first congress; boars may be seriously affected in a similar way; mares have been known even to fall dead. In the human species, and especially men, probably, as Bryan Robinson remarks, because women are protected by the greater slowness with which detumescence occurs in them -- not only death itself, but innumerable disorders and accidents have been known to follow immediately after coitus, these results being mainly due to the vascular and muscular excitement involved in the process of detumescence. Fainting, vomiting, urination, defecation have been noted as occurring in young men after the first coitus. Epilepsy has been not infrequently recorded. Lesions of various organs, even rupture of the spleen, have sometimes taken place. In men of mature age, the arteries have at times been unable to resist the high blood-pressure and cerebral hemorrhage with paralysis has occurred. In elderly men the excitement of intercourse with strange women has sometimes caused death, and various cases are known of eminent persons who have thus died in the arms of young wives or prostitutes.'

The celebrated Russian general Skobeloff, died while cohabiting with a girl of ill-fame. Robinson refers to the case of a judge who died shortly after connection with a girl in a brothel, and to the case of a man of seventy who died after intercourse with a prostitute. He also mentions the case of a man of 48 years of age who was found dying in a Chicago hotel after cohabiting with an accommodating widow. Also the case of a young man who fainted away at the first coitus, and that of a man of sixty years old who had connection with a strange woman and fell dead as he walked to the door immediately after the act. Such deaths usually occur in elderly men, and usually as the result of intercourse with strange women, which is more violent and intensive than with their wives. Atilla, king of the Huns, died while cohabiting with his young wife.

Acton, the great medical authority, points out that in some persons the termination of the orgasm is accompanied by an epileptiform convulsion of more or less severity. This is succeeded by a great amount of prostration. This is seen in a very exaggerated form in the buck rabbit, which, after each copulation, may be noticed to fall on his side in a sort of epileptic fit, the whites of the eyes being turned up. The animal then gives several spasmodic twitches with its hind legs, and lies panting for several moments until the nervous system recovers itself. Acton mentions cases of deaths occurring in houses of prostitution as well as in the marriage bed as arising from the adverse influence of the sexual orgasm on the nervous system and on the body as a whole, especially in susceptible individuals. Entomological works abound with cases in which death follows copulation. Geddes and Thomson, in their book, 'The Evolution of Sex', refer to the fact that some spiders normally die after fertilizing the female, and such sacrifice of the male occurs also in other species. The association of reproduction and death is well known in the case of flying insects, as the common mayflies. Emergence into winged liberty, the love-dance and the process of fertilization, the deposition of eggs and the death of the parents, are often the crowded events of a few hours. 'In higher animals,' say these authors, 'the fatality of the reproductive sacrifice has been greatly lessened, yet death may tragically persist, even in human life, as the direct nemesis of love. . . . The temporarily exhausting effect of even moderate sexual indulgence is well known, as well as the increased liability to all forms of disease while the individual energies are thus lowered. . . . Reproduction is the beginning of death.' . . .

The resemblance of the sexual orgasm to the epileptic attack has been noted by many authors. The sudden withdrawal of calcium produced by the seminal discharge biochemically produces the tetany-like symptoms of the orgasm, which are so similar to those of the epileptic attack . . . According to Acton, the sexual orgasm resembles the epileptic attack both in its phenomena and its effects. The mental hebetude and physical prostration following the discharge of nerve force characteristic of an epileptic attack also follow the sexual orgasm. The latter profoundly affects the whole nervous system with such intensity that Acton says that 'it is only mature individuals who can bear even infrequent acts of copulation without more or less injury. In young persons all the vital powers should be conserved for growth and development.'

Dr. Deslandes observed that epileptic attacks often follow coitus, as was the case with Napoleon. He says: 'There are some individuals who are so susceptible to epilepsy that they have a regular attack of it whenever they indulge in sexual intercourse . . . It is related of the first Napoleon -- who, as is well known, was subject to epilepsy -- that he experienced a paroxysm every time he attempted copulation.'

Menard had a watch-dog which was affected with epilepsy every time he copulated. These attacks were characterized by convulsions and by loss of consciousness. 'Coition,' said Democritus, 'is a kind of epilepsy.' 'It is,' said Haller, 'an action very similar to a convulsion, and which of itself astonishingly weakens and affects the whole nervous system.' Tissot reports cases in which emissions of semen were accompanied by 'a convulsion, a species of epilepsy; and the same observation furnishes evident proof of the influence which these violent actions have on the health of the unfortunate individual in whom they occur. The promptitude with which the weakness follows the act (of coitus) . . . and the debility of all those affected with convulsive diseases prove that the weakness is produced by the orgasm.' Tissot illustrates this point by referring to an Amman of a Swiss village, mentioned by Platerus, who, being remarried when old, and anxious to consummate his nuptials, was affected with a suffocation so violent, that he was obligated to desist. The same thing recurred every time he repeated the act. He consulted a number of quacks; one assured him that after he procured and took several medicines he was no more in danger. He hazarded a new attempt on this advice; and full of confidence, he persevered, only to die in the act in the arms of his wife. Says Tissot: 'The violent palpitations which sometimes accompany coition are also a convulsive symptom.' Hippocrates speaks of a young man in whom excesses in wine and sexual commerce produced, among other symptoms, constant palpitations; and Daleaus saw one seized in the act with a palpitation so violent that he would have suffocated if he persisted.

Havelock Ellis remarks that the symptoms of coitus bear a strong resemblance to those of epilepsy, and refers to the statement of this effect by the sophist of Abdera, who said that coitus is a slight fit of epilepsy, 'judging it to be an incurable disease.' Caelius Aurelianus, one of the leading physicians of antiquity, said that 'coitus is a brief epilepsy.' . . . Fere has recorded a case of a youth in whom the adoption of the practice of masturbation, several times a day, was followed by epileptic attacks, which ceased when masturbation was discontinued. West describes masturbation in an infant by thigh-rubbing which produced a convulsion that was mistaken by relatives for an epileptic fit. Tissot writes: 'We know that paroxysms of epilepsy, when accompanied by an emission of seminal fluid, leave the patient more exhausted, and more confused, than in ordinary cases. . . .'

. . . Mercier, an English psychiatrist, in his 'Sanity and Insanity,' writes that after the act of coitus, the resulting languor and lassitude indicate that a great strain has been placed on the store of energy available to the organism, whose seat is the nervous system, the highest regions of which -- the brain -- are most powerfully affected, and this tends to produce disorder of this organ. But while, with a normally constituted organism, the stress of the sexual orgasm is not sufficient to produce brain disorder, unless it is repeated with undue frequency, in one whose energies are naturally defective and which is constitutionally below the normal level of stability, the effect of the act will be to produce disturbed cerebral functioning. This is especially true when such indulgence is begun at too early an age. . . . According to this eminent English psychiatrist, the sexual orgasm has by its very nature a disintegrative, deteriorating influence on the organism; and the loss of energy it entails, especially when frequently repeated, results in apathy, lethargy and dementia. . . .

Besides those cases in which the dementia produced by sexual excess is sufficiently pronounced to incapacitate the wretched individual for the duties of life, and to render it necessary to commit him to asylum care, Mercier mentions that there are an enormous number of individuals, forming a considerable part of the total population, in which premature decadence of mental powers, premature exhaustion of energy and premature senility result from excess sexual indulgence in early life. . . .

Rouband describes as follows the immediate effects of the sexual orgasm of coitus, which he compares to an epileptic attack:

'The circulation quickens, the arteries beat strongly, the venous blood, arrested by muscular contraction, increases the general heat, and this stagnation, more pronounced in the brain by the contraction of the muscles of the neck and the throwing of the head backward, causes a momentary cerebral congestion, during which intelligence is lost and the faculties abolished. The eyes, violently injected, become haggard, and the look uncertain. Or in the majority of cases the eyes are closed spasmodically to avoid the contact of the light. The respiration is hurried, sometimes interrupted, and may be suspended by the spasmodic contraction of the larynx, and the air, for a time compressed, is at last emitted in broken and meaningless words. The congested nervous centers only communicate confused sensations and volitions; mobility and sensation show extreme disorder; the limbs are seized by convulsions and sometimes by cramps, or are thrown wildly about or become stiff like iron bars. The jaws, tightly pressed, grind the teeth, and in some persons the delirium is carried so far that they bite to bleeding the shoulders their companions have imprudently abandoned to them. This frantic state of epilepsy lasts but a short time, but it suffices to exhaust the forces of the organism, especially in man. It is, I believe, Galen who said, "Omne animal post coitum triste." (All animals are sad after coitus.)'

Deslandes . . . writes:

'During this tumult and after the crisis, the general state of the patient conforms in every manner to that of the genital system. Thus the face reddens, the neck swells, the veins become filled, the skin now burning and now moistened with sweat, the heart beats with rapidity. In fact, there is a state of fever which almost justifies us in placing the act of venery among diseases. At the same time the nervous centers, the cerebrum, the cerebellum and the spinal cord experience a very powerful impression. As the state progresses, consciousness is lost, and the subject is, as it were, in a state of delirium. The will is suspended, and the muscles are not controlled by it, but by the nerve centers which are so much irritated. The trunk and limbs are agitated by involuntary motions and chills. The disturbance increases until the crisis arrives, when the convulsions affect the genital system; a fit of epilepsy as it were ensues; the sight becomes dim; the trunk stiffens and the neck is thrown back; and finally this state might be regarded as a violent access of disease if the beginning and end of it were not known.

'The genital apparatus, lately so full of life, now becomes flaccid; the scrotum becomes loose and pendulent, and a sensation of torpor, of fatigue, of chill follows. The convulsive motions are succeeded by a kind of paralysis, and all attempts at new excitement are in vain . . . Now, however, the individual is changed; his face has lost its color, his limbs are stiff, and without motion as if paralyzed; the head is painful, the mind is slow and limbs are incapable of the least effort. The hearing is dull; the sight is deranged, and the external senses import to the brain only imperfect impressions. The pulsations of the heart are feeble, the pulse is small, the veins are collapsed and the eyelids are livid. The soul is left in a state of languor and sadness and becomes as it were melancholy.'

During the sexual orgasm of coitus symptoms occur which border on psychopathology; and there can be little doubt that excessive frequency of such symptoms may indelibly impress themselves on the brain and nervous system. . . .

According to Prof. Lydston, the results of sexual excess are similar to those of masturbation, and both result from the disturbance of blood chemistry and general metabolism caused by the withdrawal from the body of the substances of which the semen is composed: calcium, phosphorus, lecithin, cholesterol, albumen, iron, etc. . . . 'Moderation in sexual intercourse is not only conducive to prolonged virility, but to longevity. . . .'

. . . Professor von Gruber, while doubting the allegation that sexual abstinence may prove harmful to the nervous system, is convinced that sexual excess certainly is. He believes that frequent discharges of semen lead to a 'reduction of the peculiar internal secretion of the testes', which is otherwise resorbed into the blood-stream. The immediate effects of sexual excess, he states, are depression, fatigue and exhaustion. As further symptoms there is pressure in the lumbar region, nervous irritability, a feeling of pressure in the head, stupidity, insomnia, ringing in the ears, spots before the eyes, shunning of light, a feeble trembling and actual shaking, pounding of the heart, tendency to sweating and muscular weakness. There is also weakness of memory, neurasthenia, melancholic depression and disinclination to physical or mental effort. The digestive activity becomes less efficient and food is less well utilized. There is a deficiency in blood and a lowered resistance to infectious bacteria, the tubercle bacillus in particular, for which reason sexual excess is known to predispose to consumption aside from its tendency to drain the body of calcium. There is irritable weakness of the genitals, premature ejaculation, frequent nocturnal emissions, and increasing impotence. The more frequent nocturnal emissions that result increase the nervous irritability and exhaustion (i.e., neurasthenia). All these effects are more marked in the young and the aged; in the former, sexual excess, by its detrimental influence on metabolism and the process of growth, stunts physical and mental development, while in the aged it hastens death, often by causing heart failure.

By producing enervation and by exciting the nervous system, Dr. Shelton claims that sexual excess can further the development of any disease to which the individual is subject. For this reason a person predisposed to epilepsy is almost certain to have an attack after each sexual act. Some cases of epilepsy do not develop until after marriage for this reason. Asthmatic attacks and St. Vitus's dance are often brought on and perpetuated by sexual excess. Spinal and heart disorders are apt to occur. There is an increase of blood-pressure, which predisposes to apoplexy. Dr. Shelton writes:

'No function is so exhausting to the whole system as this. If excessively indulged in, no practice can possibly be so enervating. J. Bradford Sax probably overestimates the amount of energy consumed in coition when he says, "Probably more of the nervous fluid or influence is expended in a single sexual crisis than would suffice to carry on all the vital operations, perhaps for a day." At any rate the energy expended is very considerable and if the act is indulged in daily, or even weekly, the indulgent individual need not hope for health and strength.

'What constitutes excess? The reply has been given: Anything is excess when procreation is not the end. Man is sexually perverted. He is the only animal that has his "social problem," the only animal that supports prostitution, the only animal that practices self-abuse, the only animal that is demoralized by all forms of sexual perversions, the only animal whose male will attack the females, the only animal where the desire of the female is not the law, the only one that does not exercise his sexual powers in harmony with their primitive constitution.'

. . . Of all members of the mammalian family, civilized man alone is a victim of an exaggerated and morbid sexual urge, a condition which he has inflicted, to a certain extent, on the animals which he has domesticated and which have adopted his diet, especially the dog. Wild animals in a state of nature practice copulation only at certain mating seasons for the purpose of reproduction. Civilized man practices this act at all times, and in most cases without intention to conceive. On the other hand, so-called savages and primitive races leading more natural lives and who follow their natural instincts to a greater extent are far chaster in their sexual behavior, as noted by Havelock Ellis. Such considerations must lead one to the conclusion that the sex life of civilized men is unnatural and that the excessive manifestation of the sex urge among them is due to certain aphrodisiacal stimuli rather than to natural instinct; among such stimuli are a high-protein meat diet (accompanied by physical inactivity), the use of tobacco, alcohol and coffee, sexually stimulating literature, dramas, motion pictures, conversation, etc. For these reasons civilized man has departed from the natural law, obeyed by animals and primitive races, which requires the separation of the sexes during pregnancy and lactation, for the benefit of both mother and child. Violation of this law may account for the large number of physically and mentally defective offspring produced by civilized races as compared with animals and primitive peoples. . . .

Animals, like men, become perverted sexually and victims of an exaggerated sexual urge when they are subjected to artificial feeding and confinement. Thus apes, when confined to a cage and fed on meat and other sexually stimulating food, while previously gentle and tame on a fruit diet, become extremely licentious and vicious. Then they masturbate excessively and have intercourse daily, while the female consequently menstruates as freely as a woman. (Other female mammals leading more natural lives to not menstruate, though under domestication and excessive feeding, cows and other species do.) . . .

A biochemical theory of the neuroses and psychoses

. . . The eminent physiologist, Prof. Eugen Steinach has performed experiments which definitely showed that the internal secretions of the sex glands, after being resorbed into the circulation, pass principally to the brain and spinal cord, wherein they are stored. . . .

t is interesting to note that in contrast with the lasciviousness of idiots and the insane, which, according to Dr. Spitzka, is largely responsible for their arrested brain nutrition and development, most of the greatest mental geniuses in history led strictly continent lives (which should result in superior brain nutrition from the conservation of lecithin and other brain-nourishing seminal constituents). Thus among philosophers we have Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, Porphyry, Proclus, Leibniz, Berkeley, Locke, Spinoza, Kant and Spencer; among artists, Leonardo da Vinci, Michael Angelo, Raphael and Fra Angelico; among composers, Handel and Beethoven; and among scientists Newton. . . .

The fluids elaborated by the testes, the prostate gland and the accessory sex glands are very rich in phosphorus, as are the spermatozoa themselves. The loss of semen must therefore lower the phosphorus content of the blood, for it is from here that these glands derive the phosphorus for the manufacture of their secretions. This must deprive the nervous system of an element so necessary for its nutrition and normal well-being. This explains the neurasthenic effects of masturbation and sexual excess, which are due to loss of phosphorus through seminal emissions. The same occurs in prostatitis, where considerable phosphorus is lost through the expelled prostatic fluid. Lorand points out the beneficial influence of phosphorus when administered in many brain disorders, which are accompanied by a diminution of the phosphorus content of the brain, as Marie found in idiocy and dementia praecox. In the brain phosphorus is present chiefly in the form of lecithin, a phosphorized fat. . . .

Evans states that during thinking and mental exertion phosphates are increased in the excreta; and he therefore concludes that thinking involves an oxidation of phosphorus compounds in the brain (under the catalytic influence of the iodine of the thyroid hormone). . . . It is thus clear that phosphorus, oxygen and sufficient thyroid hormone (iodine) are all necessary for the normal generation of brain electricity, and that in the absence of either of these three elements, there will be deficient brain action. For it is well known that the brain is richer in phosphorus than any other part of the body, and also uses up oxygen three times as rapidly as other tissues; also without the catalytic influence of the thyroid hormone, it cannot function normally -- or without iodine on which element the thyroid depends for the manufacture of its secretion.

According to this point of view, neurasthenia may be considered as representing a condition of phosphorus deficiency, or rather lecithin deficiency -- for lecithin is the form in which phosphorus is present in the myelin sheaths of the nerves, the nerve-oil whose burning keeps the fires of nerve vitality burning. Since lecithin is a prominent constituent of the semen, we can understand why excessive loss of semen can cause nerve starvation and all the symptoms of neurasthenia. When the lack of lecithin and organic phosphorus is more serious, the brain itself suffers lecithin deficiency and becomes disturbed in its functioning, just as any other starved organ is when deprived of the elements it requires for its normal nutrition and functioning. In this way, psychoses commence to manifest. . . .

The action of alcohol, like that of anesthetics, is dependent on its ability to dissolve and remove lecithin from the brain; and when the concentration of brain lecithin is sufficiently lowered, insanity is the result. Sexual excess produces a similar effect; and, together with alcohol, constitutes a principal cause of neuropsychopathic conditions.

The modern view is that the origin of nervous and mental disorders is to be looked for in the endocrine glands. Now it is interesting to note that organic phosphorus, in the form of lecithin, is not only a prominent constituent of nerve and brain tissue but also of the endocrine glands, and is as necessary to the nutrition of the latter as it is of the former. . . .

In view of these observations, we can understand the reason why Dr. Brinkley places the sex glands in the position of master glands in the endocrine chain, for they alone, through their external secretion, are able to withdraw considerable amounts of lecithin and phosphatides from the circulation, and thus directly affect the functioning of the other glands, which are so dependent on phosphatides for their normal functioning. . . . But while the immediate effect of such phosphatide withdrawal is overactivity of the other endocrines, . . . the final effect is to produce underactivity and atrophy of the endocrines, due to chronic phosphatide deficiency, and this is why sexual excess leads to an earlier appearance of senility, a condition resulting from endocrine hypofunction and degeneration. Thus the basic cause of endocrine dysfunctions -- hypoactivity or hyperactivity -- is to be found in the sex glands and their ability to alter the lecithin or phosphatide content of the blood, which is the primary raw material from which the endocrines manufacture their hormones.

There is no time in life when the endocrine glands of the individual may be more powerfully affected by a deficiency of phosphatides than during the months of embryonic development, when these glands are most sensitive to their chemical environment, the maternal blood-stream. Deficiency of phosphatides in the mother's blood at this time, due to ovarian overactivity (as the result of sexual intercourse) may affect the development of the thyroid and other endocrine glands of the embryo, as well as of its central nervous system. . . . Dr. Schlapp believes that glandular depletion of the mother during gestation is the basic cause of the production of cretins and idiots, when there is no direct hereditary causation. . . .

The phosphatide withdrawal caused by activity of the sex glands and seminal emission excercises a most powerful effect upon the thymus glands, which are most dependent on adequate phosphorus supply for their normal well-being and activity. Now it is interesting to note that coincident with the increased activity of the sex glands at puberty and the subsequent withdrawal by them of phosphatides, the thymus gland degenerates. Such degeneration may be viewed as a product of lecithin deficiency, similar to the endocrine degeneration which McCarrison notes to result from vitamin B deficiency. . . .

That the internal secretion of the sex glands may have a nutritive function in relation to nervous tissue and brain cells, and that mental diseases may result from its absence, is indicated by the observation of McCarrison, who found that atrophy of the testicles is frequently found in cerebral and spinal diseases. . . .

These facts indicate an intimate relation between spermatozoa and the cells of the cerebral cortex, absence of the formation of the former leading to decline of the latter. There is evidence that spermatozoa, when not discharged, are resorbed into the blood-stream and carried to the brain. Both in their chemical composition and their elongated form, they have a remarkable similarity to brain-cells, which, like them, lack the capacity of reproduction, in contrast to most other cells of the body . . . Could spermatozoa, passing to the brain and spinal marrow, have a relation to the mobile neuroglia, which likewise move about by flagellated motions of their tail, and which are potential cells of the central nervous system? This is an interesting speculation. Norret must have had some such thought in mind when he remarked, 'The resorption of what Dr. Le Camus called a mass of microscopic brains is a source of vigor and longevity.'

That the semen contains substances of great physiological value, especially in relation to the nutrition of the nervous system, is clear from its chemical analysis, which shows that it is extremely rich in lecithin, cholesterin and phosphorus, the chief constituents of nerve and brain tissue. It therefore follows that the withdrawal of these substances from the circulation by seminal discharges (voluntarily or involuntarily) must have an adverse effect on the nutrition of nerve and brain tissue and result in disturbed functioning. Such biochemical considerations support the view that loss of seminal fluid involves lowered nutrition of nerve and brain tissue, and, when excessive, to nervous and mental disorders. . . .

Both the semen and the brain are composed largely of phosphorized fats, or phospholipins, to which class lecithin belongs. Lecithin is a substance of great importance for the nervous tissue. It is claimed by some that the nerve fatigue experienced at the end of the day's activities is due to an exhaustion of the daily supply of lecithin in the myelin sheaths of the nerves, and that the invigorating effect of sleep is due to this lecithin being replenished during the night. The chronic fatigue of old age is considered to be due to a lecithin deficiency of the endocrine glands and the body as a whole. Lecithin is essential to the life of the nervous system, the brain and the endocrine glands. . . .

Now since both the brain and the semen depend for their supply of lecithin on what exists in the blood, it is clear that excessive withdrawal of lecithin by the sex glands would mean that a smaller amount would be available for the nutrition of nerve and brain tissue. May not neuroses and psychoses be due to such diminished nutrition of nerve and brain cells due to excessive withdrawal of lecithin and cholesterol from the blood to replace expended seminal secretions? The tonic effect of lecithin preparations upon the nervous system would indicate that the conservation of the body's own lecithin should constitute a therapeutic measure of primary importance in the treatment of neurasthenia and mental disorders. . . .

The only other part of the body that can compare with brain, nerve and endocrine tissue in high content of lecithin is the semen and spermatozoa, for like the brain, the semen is a fatty substance rich in phosphorized fats, the phosphatides or phospholipins. That considerable lecithin is required for the formation of spermatozoa is indicated by Miescher's observation that the amount of lecithin in the blood is increased during the period of formation of the reproductive cells. . . .

That insanity might be due to a deficiency of lecithin in the brain, resulting from a deficiency in the blood, is indicated by the observations of Lassaigne, who found a decreased quantity of lecithin in the white brain matter of the insane. Commenting on this subject, Fischer, a French biochemist states: 'The content of the brain in combined lipoids seems, then, to have some relation to intellectual power and to its modifications as well.' Similarly, insanity due to alcohol has been shown to be due to the same cause, since alcohol is a lipoid solvent. It has been shown by experiment that in the series of agents which act as narcotics, the anesthetic power increases in proportion to the quantity of lipoids that the liquids employed are capable of dissolving from the brain. Chloroform and ether both possess the property of dissolving lipoids . . . It has also been shown that after anesthesia, ether and chloroform accumulate in the nervous tissues. . . . May not the deep unconsciousness that follows sexual activity be due to the withdrawal of lipoids from the brain by the sexual orgasm, producing results similar to those that follow the administration of an anesthetic, which likewise withdraws lipoids from this organ?

Since both the brain and the sex organs extract identical substances from the blood (lecithin, cholesterol, etc.), this would mean that there exists a chemical antagonism between them, since increased activity of the latter means decreased nutrition of the former. The more lipoids that the sex glands withdraw from the blood, the less is available to the brain. . . . [A]ll loss of seminal lipoids, whether through coitus, masturbation or nocturnal emissions, are at the expense of the brain: and this effect is most detrimental during childhood and before maturity, when the brain is in the process of growth. . . .

Continence results in a greater supply of lecithin, cholesterol and phosphates in the blood, and consequently in the brain. Brown-Sequard has shown that testicular secretions increase nerve and brain vitality. Chakraberty remarks that the eating of desiccated testicles has a stimulating effect on the central nervous system 'due to the nucleo-albumins, lecithin and phosphorus in which they are so rich, and which are also prominent constituents of nervous tissues.' (However, there is no need to eat desiccated testicles when each individual can conserve and resorb the valuable secretions of his own.) According to Fischer, the sex glands may be considered as reservoirs of lipoids, which they release into the blood to energize the brain. And conversely, through external emission, they can withdraw lipoids from the blood, and thus indirectly from the brain.

No adequate comprehension of the sexual question can be had without understanding the chemical composition of the semen and spermatozoa. When it is realized that they contain in high concentration phospholipins essential to the nutrition and normal functioning of the central nervous system, it will be realized that withdrawal of these substances from the body by seminal emissions must have an adverse effect on the nutrition of the brain and nerves, predisposing to neurasthenia and other nervous and mental affections. . . .

The excessive withdrawal of lipoids from the blood by the sex glands is at the expense of the adrenal cortex, just as the withdrawal of protein observed by Miescher is at the expense of the muscles. Excessive gonadal activity, by depriving the adrenal cortex of lipoids, leads to its atrophy. Thus, in cases of dementia praecox, many of whom were habitual masturbators, there was noted by Mott atrophy of the adrenal cortex together with progressive atrophy of the testicles. It has also been noted that excessive withdrawal of nucleoproteins and other substances from the blood to form spermatozoa may cause diminution in the size of the thymus gland and its atrophy, which probably is the reason why this occurs after puberty. (Could the atrophy of the pineal gland, accompanying that of the thymus, not be due to a similar cause, in view of the richness of the pineal in lecithin?) . . .

[T]he thymus increases in weight from birth to puberty, but as soon as the first seminal emissions occur, with the onset of puberty, it commences to retrogress and lose weight. These facts indicate that the sexual changes of puberty, instead of being the effect of thymus atrophy at this time, are the cause. . . .

The proteins of the brain cell and those of the head of the spermatozoon are very similar. Both contain abundant amounts of nucleic acid, and the head of the spermatozoa, like the Nissl substance of the brain cell, is very rich in nucleoproteins. Both the spermatozoon and the cortical brain cell are remarkably similar in their general formation. It is significant that the spermatozoon contains more phosphorus that any other cell of the body except the brain cells; and since with each ejaculation 226 million spermatozoa are given off, it is clear that in this way a considerable amount of phosphorus is lost, in addition to the phosphatic constituents of the semen. . . .

It is interesting to note that the cerebro-spinal fluid, like the semen, is rich in calcium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium and chlorine, and has an alkaline reaction. The ancients noted a relation between the semen and the spinal cord, and Hippocrates believed that involuntary seminal losses can cause tabes dorsalis. That they cause spinal weakness is well known.

That the sex glands and the brain have an intimate physiological connection with each other, which is antagonistic in the sense that greater activity of one leads to decreased activity of other, has been stated by Havelock Ellis in the following words:

'The brain and the sexual organs are the great rivals in using up bodily energy, and there is an antagonism between extreme brain vigor and extreme sexual vigor, even though they may sometimes appear at different periods in the same individual. In this sense, there is no paradox in the saying of Roman Correa that potency is impotency and impotency potency, for a high degree of energy, whether in athletics or in intellect, is unfavorable to the display of energy in other directions. . . . The masters of all the more intensely emotional arts have frequently cultivated a high degree of chastity. This is notably the case as regards music. One thinks of Mozart, of Beethoven, of Schubert. . . .'

Dr. Ryan expressed a similar thought when he wrote:

'Bacon observed that no one of great genius in antiquity had been addicted to women; and he stated that among the moderns the illustrious Newton had never enjoyed sexual intercourse. This fact confirms the remark made by Aretaeus, and since verified by physiologists, that continence, or the reabsorption of the semen into the bodily economy, impresses the whole organism with an extreme tension and vigor, exciting the brain and exalting the faculty of thought.'

. . . Prof. F.G. Lydston presents evidence to prove that neurasthenia has its roots in prostatic dysfunction caused by sexual indulgence, which results in depletion and derangement of the prostatic hormone. . . . Dr. Allen . . . considers masturbation and sexual excess as the causes of impotence, producing as they do inflammation and congestion of the prostatic urethra, a condition predisposing to nocturnal emissions and spermatorrhea, which precipitate loss of functional activity of the testicles . . .

It appears that the internal secretion of the prostate gland accelerates growth and metamorphosis by its stimulating influence on the thyroid and pituitary gland . . . Clear evidence of the importance of the prostate secretion to the body is afforded by the study of its loss as occurs in cases of spermatorrhea, a disease characterized by the involuntary emission of prostatic and other seminal secretions unaccompanied by any erotic sensation -- a condition closely allied to prostatitis. The loss of lecithin, cholesterin, phosphates, etc. thus occasioned exercises its most immediate and profound effect on the spinal cord and entire central nervous system. Spermatorrhea (literally 'a flow of semen') was known to Hippocrates, who called the disease tabes dorsalis. . . . For the cure of this condition, Hippocrates advised sex abstinence and avoidance of alcohol. Celsus advised in addition a special raw vegetable diet. Aretaeus advised continence and cold baths. Languius advises intestinal purification through proper diet as the basic factor in the cure of this condition. . . .

Our modern knowledge of spermatorrhea dates back to Lallemand, who made the most careful study of this disease. He traces it to an inflammation, congestion and hypersecretion of the mucous membranes of the urethra, primarily initiated by frequent sexual orgasm and intensified by the irritation of toxic blood resulting from wrong diet and autointoxication. Alcohol, coffee, tea and spices, by irritating the genital mucous membranes, he believes to contribute to this condition. The chief causes, he says, are 'sexual excess and masturbation, which act principally by provoking inflammation or irritation of the ducts, and prolonged erections excited by erotic ideas or lascivious publications.'

Professor Bartholow of the Medical College of Ohio, in his book on spermatorrhea, considers masturbation and sexual excess as the chief causes. He then goes on to show that the frequently repeated sexual orgasm causes a condition of inflammation of the urethra, manifesting first as nocturnal emissions, and when more serious merging imperceptibly into true spermatorrhea, in which the act of emission occurs without erection, pleasure or particular sensation, the semen gradually losing its color, odor and spermatozoa gradually coming to resemble mucous or prostatic secretion, often being lost with the urine. Professor Bartholow believes that spermatorrhea may cause degeneration of the cells of the gray matter of the spinal cord, which indicates a relationship to tabes dorsalis or locomotor ataxia, which has been repeatedly observed by physicians in both ancient and modern times. This is understandable in view of the close similarity in chemical composition between the semen and the spinal cord, for which reason excessive losses of semen can deprive the myelin of spinal tissue of lecithin, which is so necessary for the nutrition of nerve cells. . . .

Formerly spermatorrhea and gonorrhea were identified as the same disease, and also gonorrhea and syphilis. Spermatorrhea appears to represent a catarrhal inflammation of the genital mucous membranes, accomplished by a mucous discharge. Ordinary nocturnal emissions constitute a primary manifestation of such a catarrhal inflammation, while true spermatorrhea represents a more advanced form, being the male homologue of leucorrhea in the female. When the inflammation of the genital mucosa advances from a catarrhal to a purulent stage, the discharge assumes a purulent character; and in place of whitish or colorless mucus, there occurs the characteristic yellowish purulent discharges of gonorrhea accompanied by the gonococcus. . . . It is clear that the neurological symptoms of gonorrhea, like those of spermatorrhea, are produced, if not exaggerated, to a great extent by the loss of lecithin, through the seminal discharges which invariable precede this disease.

As the inflammation of the genital mucosa advances from a purulent (gonorrheal) state of inflammation to a fibroid and atrophic one, we have the characteristic fibroid growths and cancers of the uterus in the female, while in the male, the cancer-like growths on the sexual organs characteristic of the beginnings of syphilis appear. That the demineralization and dealkalization of the blood through previous seminal discharges prepare the soil for such cancerous developments, there can be no doubt, while a resulting condition of acid intoxication can prepare the biochemical conditions of the organism for the skin pathologies of secondary syphilis, which bear a resemblance to those that accompany the seminal discharges resulting from the masturbation and involuntary emissions of puberty. . . .

From the foregoing, it is clear that there is an important internal physiological relation between the secretions of the sex glands and the central nervous system, that the loss of these secretions, voluntarily or involuntarily, exercises a detrimental effect on the nutrition and vitality of the nerves and brain, while, on the other hand, the conservation of these secretions has a vitalizing effect on the nervous system, a regenerating effect on the endocrine glands and a rejuvenating effect on the organism as a whole.

Chemistry of semen, spermatozoa and brain

Seminal fluid is composed of the secretory products of the testis, epididymis, seminal vesicles, prostate gland and Cowper's gland. It is a viscid, albuminous fluid, alkaline in reaction and opalescent in color. The average amount given off at each ejaculation, which varies with individuals and with the same individual at different times, is about 5 grams. In each ejaculation about 226 million spermatozoa are believed to exist.

Human semen contains 90 per cent water and 10 per cent solids which when incinerated yield 1 per cent ash. The quantitative analysis of the ash reveals a large amount of calcium and phosphorus. According to Lode, the amount of calcium given off at one ejaculation is about 0.01 gm., which exceeds that in an equal quantity of lime water. As we have mentioned, the semen also contains a substance named spermine, which is a powerful metabolic stimulant and has been so recommended by Poehl in 1898. Spermine has also been found to be present in the gray matter of the brain. This may explain its nerve-invigorating properties, which resemble those of lecithin, also present both in the semen and the brain.

The physiological chemist, Simon, describes the semen, as a thick, whitish, glutious mass containing *cholesterin*, which he calls "brain fats", and *lecithin*, a phosphorus-containing fatty constituent of brain substances. If the semen is allowed to stand until it evaporates, Simon notes that it deposits a film of prisms composed largely of phosphate of lime. On heating it gives off ammonia, leaving a carbonaceous mass containing sodium chloride, calcium phosphate and magnesia. According to Lode, the ash of the semen contains 20% calcium and 30% phosphoric acid.

Chakraberty describes the composition of the semen as follows, "The protein substance consists of nucleoproteins, traces of mucin, albumin and a proteose, and is relatively richer in nuclein than any other part of the body. The mineral bodies are calcium, phosphorus, sodium chloride and potassium." It is thus clear that emissions of semen can withdraw considerable minerals from the body, and so predispose to mineral deficiency, in addition to the withdrawal of lecithin, cholesterin and nucleoproteins.

It is to its prostatic components that the semen owes its milky turbidness and peculiar odor. This milky turbidness is due to the lecithin globules (fatty-nitrogen-phosphorus compounds) of the prostate gland, the decomposition of which leads to the odor. The prostatic secretion also contains sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chlorides, phosphorus, sulfur, nucleoproteins, albumin, etc. In a paper, "The Constitution of the Normal Prostatic Secretion" (Am. Jour. Med. Sciences, Aug., 1903), Stern points out the presence in the prostatic secretion of "abundant amounts" of phosphorus-containing lecithin, an essential constituent of nervous tissue. The loss of this deprives the nerve cells of nourishment; and this explains the relation between prostatitis and neurasthenia.

No two organs show greater similarity in their lecithin, cholesterin and phosphorus contents as the semen and the brain. The analyses of Slowtzoff, Meischer and Lode show the semen to contain:

Proteins albumin, nucleoproteins, globulins, mucin, nuclein, proteose, protamin, hemialalbumose, alkali albuminate 2.650%

Lipoids phosphorized fats, including lecithin 0.412%

Cholesterin 0.208%

Minerals phosphorus, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, sulfur, chlorine 0.910%

The high concentration of lipoids (lecithin, etc.) in the semen, rivaled only by that in the brain, is striking. Wheelon(?) writes, "The beneficial results following the administration of testicular preparations have been considered due to the presence of nucleo-albumin rich in phosphorus, resembling lecithin or glycerophosphates (Sajous). Microscopic studies have definitely shown the presence of fatty particles in the interstitial cells and lymphatics of the testis, the fat content varying with the sexual cycles. Certain investigators, especially Duesberg, contend that these microscopic bodies represent the internal secretion of the testes." The interstitial cells of the testis, like the brain cells, are characterized by richness in lipoids.

No investigator has more carefully studied the chemistry of any cell than Miescher in his studies of the spermatozoon. He found its tail to be very rich in phosphorized fats (phospholipins), particularly lecithin, and also cholesterin, while the head consists almost entirely of nucleoproteins and an organic substance containing iron, besides abundant amounts of phosphorized fats. According to Miescher, the tail of the spermatazoon has the following composition:

Protein 41.90%

Phosphorized fats (lecithin) 31.83%

Cholesterin 26.27%

The spermatazoon as a whole contains:

Protein 83.76%

Lecithin 07.47%

Other fats 04.53%

Cholesterin 02.53%

Chakraberty describes the tail of the spermatazoon as being composed of proteins, lecithin, cholesterin and lipoids, and states that "its composition resembles the non-medulated nerves or the axis-cylinder."

According to Meischer, the head of the human spermatazoon consists entirely (96%) of a substance very rich in nitrogen and protein, belonging to the group of compounds known as nucleo-proteins. The other four percent of the substance of the head of the spermatazoon consists of lecithin, cholesterin, fat, calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate and an organic substance containing 0.12% iron.

Miescher found a higher concentration of lecithin in the blood of fish at the time of spermatogenesis than normally, which indicates that a considerable amount of lecithin is withdrawn from the circulation for the formation of spermatozoa. He also observed that in the salmon, the sexual organs develop at the expense of the muscular system and that the proteins deposited in the testes for the formation of spermatozoa is derived from the protein of the muscles, since the fish does not take in any food during this period. He noted that during the breeding season the muscles of the salmon atrophied to the degree that the sex glands became more active. Marshall remarks on this subject, "In the salmon, the material for the growth of the testis is supplied by the muscles undergoing atrophy."

In the human subject a similar relation has been noted. It should be observed that the adrenal glands and the testes are embryologically and histologically closely related. (Could the atrophy of the pineal gland, accompanying that of the thymus, not be due to a similar cause, in view of the richness of the pineal in lecithin?) Prof. Sajous shows that thymic tissue and lymphocytes are remarkably rich in nucleins, as are the heads of the spermatozoa.

Backmann found that the thymus attains its greatest size and weight just when the spermatogenesis commences, after which it starts to atrophy. Hammar noted that the thymus increases in weight from birth to puberty, but as soon as the first seminal emissions occur, with the onset of puberty, it commences to retrogress and lose weight. These facts indicate that the sexual changes of puberty, instead of being the effect of thymus atrophy at this time, are the cause.

Ostwald states that the spermatozoon contains an oxidizing ferment which acts on the ovum during fertilization and initiates its development. Loeb considers this oxidizing ferment to be lysine, whose action on the cell wall of the ovum starts embryonic growth, which can occur without fusion of cell nuclei.

It is significant that the spermatozoon contains more phosphorus than any other cell of the body except the brain cells; and since with each ejaculation 226 million spermatozoa are given off, it is clear that in this way a considerable amount of phosphorus is lost, in addition to the phosphatic constituents of the semen.

Modern knowledge of brain is comparatively recent and goes back to 1910 when Thudischem published "Die Chemische Konstitution des Gehirns des Menschen und de Thiere" (Chemical Composition of Human and Animal Brains). It was early realized that the most striking difference between the chemistry of the brain and that of the rest of the body is the large quantities of lipoids it contains, especially lecithin. Nerve and brain tissue are fatty substances; approximately half of this fat is cholesterin and approximately half consists of lipoids, half of which is lecithin.

No tissues in the body contain such a large quantity of fatty, alcohol-soluble substances (i.e., lipoids) as the brain, with the exception of fat tissue itself. The lipoids of the brain, however, are almost entirely free from neutral fat. These lipoids contain large amounts of phosphorus. These phospholipins have a very important function in the brain and increase in quantity with its development. The most important of them is lecithin. The growth of the brain in infancy has been found to be proportional to the lecithin content of the milk. Human milk, intended to nourish a more rapidly growing brain, therefore contains more lecithin than animal milk.

Brain lipoids are of two kinds. Some, like lecithin, are found in other organs, while others, like cephalin, phrenosin and keratin, are found only in the brain. The white matter of the brain contains twice as much cholesterin as the gray matter; the latter, on the other hand, contains twice as much lecithin and three times as much cephalin. This explains the reasons for Lassaigne's observation that in insane subjects the amount of fat and lecithin in the brain decreases in enormous proportions.

Students of the physiological chemistry of the central nervous system emphasize the fact that *in the active protoplasm of each nerve and brain cell, lecithin and cholesterin are the most prominent constituents*. They are also the principal constituents of the semen, which, like the brain, is also a fatty substance. These facts clearly indicate the existence of an important biochemical relationship (through the medium of the blood) between the semen and the central nervous system:

Lecithin, according to Sajous, is "a conspicuous component of the brain, nerves, yolk of egg, semen, pus, white blood corpuscles and the electrical organs of the ray." Concerning the importance of lecithin to the nerve cells, he says, "Lecithin, therefore, becomes the functional ground-substance of the cell-body of the neuron, just as it is in the nerve. Both in the neuron and its continuation, the nerve, therefore, the vascular fibrils carry blood-plasma, which, by passing through their walls, maintains a continuous reaction, of which the phosphorus of the lecithin and the oxygen of the blood-plasma are main reagents, and chemical energy is the end-result." According to Duval's observations, functioning nerve tissue is the seat of intense combustion accompanied by the liberation of heat; in view of Evan's deductions, this should consist chiefly in the oxidation therein of organic phosphorus compounds (i.e., lecithin).

Concerning the large amounts of phosphorus in the brain, Professor Mathews, the physiological chemist, says, "Not only do we find compounds of phosphorus in the protoplasm of the brain (and its importance was emphasized by Thudischem by the selection of the phosphatide, to indicate that the other radicals are grouped around it), but phosphorus occurs in large amounts in the nucleus and in phytin; it helps regulate cell reactions." Among the phosphatides (phospholipins) that compose the largest part of the solids of the brain are: lecithin, cephalin, myelin, sphingomelin, amino-myelin and paramyelin. Besides the phospholipins are the glycolipins, which include phrenosin, kerasin, cerebron, homcerebrin, and cerebric acid. There are also amino-lipins, or nitrogenous fats. The medullary sheaths surrounding the nerves are composed of glycolipins (cerebrosides), phospholipins and cholesterin. Sajous states his conviction that the myelin of the nerves is not a mere insulating material or sheath, but a phosphorus-containing substance (lecithin) which, when in contact with oxygen-laden blood, generates nerve-electricity through oxidation.

The importance of sufficient lecithin to keep the myelin sheaths properly nourished is therefore apparent. Could not the symptoms of neurasthenia, i.e., diminished generation of nerve-electricity, be due to lecithin deficiency as the result of seminal withdrawals? Lipins, including lecithin, play a role in maintaining of irritability of the nerves. Mathews believes, with Sajous, that the lecithin and lipins of the myelin sheaths have a nutritive function in relation to the nerves. Tashiro showed that nerve fibers are centers of the most active metabolism of any cells of the body, and that they are nourished by the lipoidal substances of the sheath that surrounds them, namely, the phosphatides. It is therefore clear that phosphatides, most important of which is lecithin, are of great importance to the nutrition of the nerves, and that an abundant supply of them in the blood makes for the best nutrition of nervous tissue, while a deficiency, as is caused by excessive activity of the sex glands, leads to under-nutrition and diminished functioning of nerve and brain cells, which can lead to the appearance of neuroses and psychoses.

According to Mathews, the materials of which the medullary sheath of the nerves is composed are galactose, inosite, fatty acids, phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, potassium, calcium and sodium besides abundant lecithin. Mathews states that in order to fulfill its nutritive function in relation to nerve cells, the myelin sheath contains a reserve of phospholipins (lecithin). The more rapid the metabolism of the nerve fiber, the larger the quantity of such nutritive substances that pass from the myelin sheath to the rest of the nerve cell.

In view of these considerations, neurasthenia should be viewed as a condition of lipoidal undernutrition of nervous tissue due to a lack of lecithin and phosphatides in the medullar sheaths. Sexual neurasthenia is obviously due to the withdrawal of these substances from the blood by the sex glands and their discharge through the semen.

According to Petrowssky, the gray and white matter of the brain have the following composition:

Substance Gray matter White matter

Water 81.62% 68.25%

Fixed residuum 18.28% 31.75%

Albumen and keratin 11.42% 08.87%

Lecithin 03.16% 03.14%

Cholesterin and fats 03.44% 16.64%

Cerebrin 00.10% 03.01%

Minerals (potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, chlorine, sulpher) 00.26% 00.18%

The albumens found in the brain are similar to those in the semen. Both are composed chiefly of albumen and lipoids; and both contain more cholesterol, lecithin and phosphorus than other parts of the body. The brain also contains cephalin, cerebrosides, cerebric acid, myelin, neuroplastin and lactic acid.

It is interesting to note that the cerebro-spinal fluid, like the semen, is rich in calcium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium and chlorine, and has an alkaline reaction. The ancients note a relation between the semen and the spinal cord, and Hippocrates believed that involuntary seminal losses can cause tabes dorsalis. That they cause spinal weakness is well known.

That the sex glands and the brain have an intimate physiological connection with each other, which is antagonistic in the sense that greater activity of one leads to decreased activity of the other, has been stated by Havelock Ellis in the following words:

"The brain and the sexual organs are the great rivals in using up bodily energy, and there is an antagonism between brain vigor and extreme sexual vigor, even though they may sometimes appear at different periods in the same individual. In this sense, there is no paradox in the saying of Roman Correa that potency is impotency and impotency potency, for a high degree of energy, whether in athletics or in intellect, is unfavorable to the display of energy in other directions.... The masters of all the more intensely emotional arts have frequently cultivated a high degree of chastity. This is notably the case as regards music. One thinks of Mozart, of Beethoven, of Shubert. At the age of twenty-five, when he had already produced much fine work, Mozart wrote in a letter that he had never touched a woman."

Dr. Ryan expressed a similar thought when he wrote:

"Bacon observed that no one of great genius in antiquity had been addicts to women; and he stated that among the moderns the illustrious Newton had never enjoyed sexual intercourse. This fact confirms the remark made by Aretaeus, and since verified by physiologists, that continence, or the reabsorption of the semen into the bodily economy, impresses the whole organism with an extreme tension and vigor, exciting the brain and exalting the faculty of thought

The article is biased ... Why only men are singled out ? What about the receipents, i.e., the so-called stronger sex- women ? What impact has it on them ? We have not come across any women dying or expiriong after sex! In fact, as per sexologists, women experience multiple orgasms! Agreed sex act expends a lot of calories (and nothing more) and therefore a good exercise for the general well being and health of teh body.Continenece produces brainy or genuis people is also unfounded!

So please do not malign sex in name of spiritulaism or any otehr philosopy of yours!

I find the article FACT-BASED instead of being biased, men are singled out or not is besides the point, the point is that if this applies to man then it should be taken seriously.

I am sure we can find better exercises than sex. yoga, swimming take your pick. Sex is a powerful act because it creates life, for those people who use it responsibly. For those who do not lets see the outcome:rape, birth control, AIDS peadophiles etc.

Anything done excessively is bad, such as overeating leads to mainly obesity(there may be other side effects such as greed), too much sleeping leads to laziness, similarly too much sex or masturbation has a reaction, cause and effect.

and based on the first article of this discussion excessive means anything other then to procreate. The more we unregulate the senses the more we become that of an uncivilised animal. As Prabhupada clearly states Human life is meant for austerity. so therefore he is not only speaking philosophy, he is speaking facts: if we understand him logically and clearly not sentimentally, there are many people around this world who are sensible, controlled and regulated, they are happy, those who are not are unhappy because there are always in want of something, this whole world is going around the desire of sex, this is due to the fact that sex is the highest pleasure this world has to offer.

continance produces brainy people has been founded as again if the first article was read properly then the following would have been found:Thus among philosophers we have Pythagoras, Plato, Leonardo da Vinci,Newton etc.

Mohammed Ali used to obstain from sex for 3 months before his fights which made him undefeatable, when he lost his fights this was due to not following obstinance. Gandhi also lead a continance life which gave him power to influence many people.

I hope that helped,

ys, J

So far there's not enough evidence that chemical components are 'given off' causing a lack aside, but they are stimulated to generate again and again, means that a healthy human being is able to produce 'extra' fluids with not problem at all, nature knows what it does, ... not this ignorant with less than 100 years old... in other words if this guy were able to digest large amounts of sperma, wouldn't be smarter... nice try, anyway.

Hare Krsna,

The body takes so much blood and energy to make semen, but at the same time the semen is only used for procreation, the nutrition value of semen is only a fraction of chemicals, but at the same time it took a lot out of your body, think about it, after sex the body is tired, thats a fact, any form of ejaculation does make the body tired.

Regarding your point about ingesting semen, it has no value or does not make the person smarter. y? because semen has low nutritional value, but that doesnt mean its cheap, it still takes a lot to make it. ask any scientist.

A typical ejaculation fills up about one teaspoon; the actual amount is determined by a man's age (younger men usually make more semen), when he last ejaculated, and how long he's aroused before ejaculating, among other factors. semen is not loaded with calories. Each teaspoon of ejaculate has about 5 - 7 calories and some 200 - 500 million sperm. Since sperm make up only about 1 percent of semen, what accounts for the other 99 percent? Well, its other ingredients include:

Fructose sugar

Water

Ascorbic acid (a.k.a., vitamin C)

Citric acid

Enzymes

Protein

Phosphate and bicarbonate buffers (bases)

Zinc

Can swallowing semen enrich a poor diet? Unless you're gulping gallons of it each day, it's no substitute for real nutritious cuisine.

I am sure scientists know wot they are talking about, its no good just arguing our theories, if we feel so strong about the topic then we should go out and look for the answers. Only by critical thinking we will find out the truth.

I am not going to get into the details on this, especially being the only woman commenting! However, I do agree both sides should be presented. Briefly:

1) Even woman are exhausted afterwards, so it drains them also. I dont know about falling over dead, but in reality not too many men are falling over dead either.

2) The adrenals are especially effected, and without strong adrenals no one can function in day-to-day life very well becaues adrenals are the main source of energy. While some youngins' may not relate to this, after 40 its all downhill and women are no exception. Therefore celibacy benefits both genders, and no sense wearing the body down prematurely.

2b) I'd have to add as part of the last one, all or most organs, or rather the endocrine system is being worked HARD during sex, therefore it is not limited to the adrenals being drained. They all are. And now you know why both genders fall asleep afterwards! With age, sleep does not bring sufficient rejuvination. Much can't be seen but there is invisible wear and tear on the body, even of women, when there is sexual indulgence.

Maybe someone can find some scientific studies on the benefits of celibacy for women.

I am new to this subject, and therefore will not agree or disagree, yet. I do think the article at hand is informative, but oddly one-sided. The Indian race is known for being more peaceful ( I am American), and seem to have closer knit families. These two facts are evidence that abstinence(except for the purpose of child-bearing) has benefits. I guess what I take offense to is that women are hardly mentioned, and are not studied accordingly. More please!

WOMEN AND BRAHMACHARYA

Is celibacy important to women also ?An aspirant writes: "I would like to know whether the same theory regarding the formation of Veerya and loss of the same holds good in the case of women also. Are they actually affected to the same extent as men?" The question is an important and pertinent one. Yes, indulgence in the sexual act is exhausting to the female system and a drain upon the vitality as in man. The nervous strain it imposes on the system is very great indeed.

The female gonads, the ovaries corresponding to the testes in the males, produce, develop and mature precious, vital force like semen. This is the ovum. Though the woman does not actually lose this out of her body, as in the case of semen in man, yet, due to the sexual act, it leaves the ovaries and is taken up in the process of conception to form the embryo. And one knows only too well what a strain and drain on strength child-bearing is to a woman. Repeated depletion of this force and the strain of childbirth makes wrecks of healthy ladies, and works havoc with their strength, beauty and grace as well as their youth and mental power. Eyes lose the lustre and sparkle that are indicative of the inner forces.

The intense sensuous excitement of the act shatters the nervous system and causes debility too. Their system being more delicate and high-strung, females are often more affected than men.

Women should preserve their precious vital force. The ovum and the hormones secreted by the ovaries are very essential for the maximum physical and mental well-being of women.

Women also should observe the vow of celibacy. They also can remain as Naishthic Brahmacharinis like Mirabai and devote themselves to the service and devotion of God. Or they can do Brahma-Vichara like Gargi and Sulabha. They will be styled as Brahma-Vicharinis, enquirers of Brahman, if they adopt this path.

Grihastha-Dharminis or householders among women should observe Pativrata-Dharma or the vow of chastity and should keep Savitri, Anasuya, as their ideal. They should see Lord Krishna in their husbands and realize God, like Laila in Majnu. They also can practice all the Kriyas such as Asanas and Pranayamas. They should do vigorous Sankirtan, Japa and prayer daily in their houses. Through Bhakti, they can easily destroy passion, because by nature they are devotional.

Many women of yore had done miraculous deeds and shown to the world the power of chastity. Nalayini, by the power of chastity, stopped the rising of the sun to save her husbands’s life. Anasuya turned the Trimurtis—Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesvara—into babies when they wanted Nirvana Bhiksha. It is through the power of chastity only that she was able to turn the great deities into babies. Savitri brought back the life of Satyavan, her husband, from the noose of Yama, by her chastity. Such is the power of chastity or Brahmacharya. Women who lead an ideal householder’s life with chastity can also become like Anasuya, Nalayini or Savitri.

Brahmacharinis—ancient and modern

In olden days, there were Brahmacharinis in India. They were Brahmavadinis; they discoursed on Brahman. They did not wish to lead the life of Grihastha-Dharminis devoted to a householder’s duties. They served the Rishis and sages in their hermitages and did Brahma-Vichara or enquiry of Brahman. King Janasruti placed his daughter at the service of Rishi Raikva. You will find this in the Chhandogya Upanishad.

Sulabha was a very learned lady. She was born in a royal family. She was a Brahmacharini. She was instructed in the religion of emancipation. She observed the practice of asceticism. She was firm in the practices that belonged to the mode of life she led. She was steady in her vows. She never uttered a word without reflecting on its propriety. She was a Yogini. She led the life of a Sannyasini. She appeared before Janaka in his court and had a great discussion with him on Brahma-Vidya or the Science of the Self.

Gargi was also a Brahmacharini. She also was a highly cultured lady. She also had a lengthy discussion with Yajnavalkya on Brahma-Vidya. The dialogue between them comes in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad.

In Europe also there were many women who were celibate and who dedicated their lives entirely to severe austerity, prayer and meditation. They had their own hermitages. In India, even at the present moment, there are educated women who lead the life of Brahmacharinis. They do not wish to marry. This is due to the force of good Samskaras of previous births. They give education to the girls in schools. They give free tuition privately to poor girls and train them in sewing and other household works. They study religious books and practice meditation in the morning and in the evening. They do Kirtan. They keep a daily spiritual diary. They conduct Satsanga classes and Kirtan among women. They train girls in the practice of Asanas and Pranayama. They give discourses on the Gita and the Upanishads. They deliver lectures on the religious subjects in English, Sanskrit and Hindi. During holidays and on important occasions, they hold religious conferences for ladies on a grand scale for mass spiritual awakening.

Sometimes they visit nearby villages and distribute medicines freely to the poor. They are equipped with the knowledge of first-aid, homoeopathy, allopathy and the bio-chemical system of medicine. They are trained in nursing the sick. There is a highly educated Brahmacharini, who is well-versed in Sanskrit, English and Hindi, who is the head of an institution for girls. She maintains a free private school also for poor girls at her own expense. This is a very noble service indeed.

Such girls and women are really a blessing to India. They lead a life of purity and self-sacrifice. They enjoy bliss, prosperity and renown here and will also attain the immortal abode of supreme peace hereafter. India is in need of more Brahmacharinis of this description who can dedicate their lives to service, meditation and prayer.

There was a Maharani in the erstwhile United Provinces who wore simple dress, ate simple food, served Sadhus and poor people and always lived amongst Sannyasins. She had a sound knowledge of the scriptures and she did regular meditation and prayer. She observed Mouna or the vow of silence for months together and spent some time in seclusion and ruled her state also.

There is an educated woman who is an M.B.B.S. Her husband is holding a good position. She treats the patients freely. She does not charge any fees for visiting. She does very good service to the society. She is not a job hunter. She is free from greed. She does medical service for the purification of her heart. She regards medical service of the poor people as worship of God. She looks after the house and serves her husband. She studies religious books and spends sometime in meditation, worship and prayer. She is an ideal woman who leads a glorious and pious life.

Loose life is not freedom

The world is in dire need of such ideal women. I wish that the world may abound with such glorious women. I do not condemn women. I do not oppose giving them education and freedom. I have the highest veneration for women. I adore them as Devis or goddesses. But, I am not in favour of such freedom for women as will ruin them. I am in favour of such education and culture as will make them - immortal and glorious, as will make them ideal women like Sulabha, Mira and Maitreyi, like Savitri and Damayanti. This is what I want. This is what everybody would like.

Loose life is not perfect freedom. Some women of India have ruined themselves by taking advantage of this false freedom. There is no limit to the freedom, which the so-called educated woman enjoys now. This freedom has caused many homes to be wrecked. It has created disorders in society. It has brought shame on many respectable families. The girls, in their insatiable craving for freedom, have overstepped the limit and lost that priceless possession which the women of the past could keep untarnished.

By mixing with men freely, woman loses her dignity, modesty, feminine grace, and the sanctity of her person and character. A woman who mixes freely with men cannot preserve her chastity for long. There can be, and there have been, exceptions. A woman who mixes with men freely in public life and yet remains pure must be certainly superhuman. An ordinary woman with her natural passion will soon succumb. Human nature will fulfil itself.

What is there in a woman’s life if her purity is lost? She is only a living corpse if there is no purity, although she may be rolling in wealth and moving in high circles in society. Promiscuous mixing will lead to disastrous results. Even Rishis and Yogins who are clad in rags, who live on roots in seclusion, will be pulled down by the dark forces of nature if they are careless. Then what to speak of women who eat daily dainties and sweetmeats, who are clad in perfumed velvet and silk with lace borders, who are given to too much mixing, who do not lead a life of self-control, who have no religious training and discipline, who have no idea of the inner life and the religion of emancipation? O wise reader! I leave this for your own consideration, reflection, cogitation and deliberation.

Women should not do anything that can bring dishonour or infamy on them and their family, and a blot on their character. Without character, a man or a woman is considered as dead while living. Women should be very careful and cautious when they move in society. They should avoid too much talking, too much mixing, guffaw and giggling. They should always walk in a dignified manner and not with the swinging of the hips. They should never look at men with a flitting gesture. Clothes should not be too tight or revealing. Abandon make-up.

A call to spiritual life

O Devis! Do not waste your lives in fashion and passion. Open your eyes. Walk in the path of righteousness. Preserve your Pativrata Dharma. See Divinity in your husband. Study the Gita, the Upanishads, Bhagavata and Ramayana. Become good Grihastha-Dharminis and Brahma-Vicharinis. Bring forth many Gourangas. The destiny of the world is entirely in your hands. You are holding the master-key of the world. Open the door of Elysian bliss. Bring Vaikuntha in your home. Train your children in the spiritual path. Sow the spiritual seed when they are young.

O Devis of the world! Should you not strive for the higher life, the grand, the sublime, the only real life in the Soul? Is it sufficient if you are satisfied with the petty material necessities of life on earth? Do you remember what Maitreyi said to Yajnavalkya? "What shall I do with the wealth of this whole world if thereby I would not become immortal?" said she to her husband. How many ladies of this world will be bold enough to assert this wise saying of the Upanishadic ideal of a woman?

To chain themselves with the bondage of Samsara is not the birthright of the mothers and sisters of the world. To get stuck up in family, children and relatives is not the ideal of courageous and discriminative women. Every mother of the world should realize her responsibility to awaken herself, her children, her family and her husband, to the true light, and splendour of spiritual life. What a glorious mother was Madalasa! Did she ask her children to study up to the post-graduate examination, and then seek for some employment? "Suddhosi, Buddhosi, Niranjanosi, Samsara Maya Parivarjitosi—You are pure, you are consciousness, you are taintless, you are devoid of the Maya of Samsara"—such was the Advaitic instruction which Madalasa gave to her children when she rocked them in the cradle. How many mothers of the present-day world have got the fortune to teach their children such profound knowledge? On the other hand, the present-day mothers would try to crush the spiritual tendency of their children even if it is found in them in a microscopic state! What a sad and pitiable condition! Wake up, O mothers, sisters! Wake up from your deep sleep. Recognise your responsibility. Spiritualise yourselves. Spiritualise your children. Spiritualise even your husbands, for you are the makers of the family! Remember how Chudala illumined her husband. You are the makers of the nations! You are the builders of the world! Therefore, spiritualise yourselves. Assert in yourselves the spirit of Sulabha, Maitreyi, Gargi. Do not be cowardly. Come out of your fleshy homes—the homes of delusion, the homes of vanity!

Be you all real Sannyasinis and bring real glory, real greatness, for that is real boldness and courage, that is real wisdom and understanding. A woman is not a woman if she is devoid of spiritual fire in her, if she is ignorant of a higher life in the Soul. A woman’s duty is not merely family; her duty is also to transcend the family. Her duty does not lie in sans, bangles, jackets, powders and scents. Her duty does not lie in getting employment for her children. Her duty is also concerned with the Self, the Atman, the Brahman. Such a woman is a real symbol of God. She is to be adored, she is to be worshipped!

The biggest objection to people's trying to follow the "four reg's " is usually sex life. For most it is not that they are so addicted to sex, more that they don't understand who they are, and having listened to so many people from an early age emphasising (over-emphasising) the sexual act they have taken it as the norm' to pursue and enjoy.

As many of you would know basic moral issues have changed dramatically over the past fifty years, especially. From where there used to be values of common decency, now anything goes - it's all on the InterNet.

In their modern liberalistic so-called freedom the user/abuser have become near indistinguishable. In most cases mutual abuse of the body to gain sensual please has become the accepted norm. then to accentuate the feeling further the use of drugs, excitable clothing, or even contraptions formally used to restrain or torture by oppressors, has been incorporated into their game of darkness.

Do anything, but feel pleasure, even if it harms the body, or harms others. In many places the pornographic industry has supported these ideals. Some have taken it to the furthest extreme to accentuate the sexual act by creating Snuff Movies where at the highest point of sexual climax they kill their partner as the Black Widow spider does. Not exactly human ethics, eh?

If people had some idea that they are not that body, and then didn't exploit their bodies even through this liberalistic idea of mutual consent as a means of sexual-social interaction - using each other's body as a primary source of pleasure as depicted and marketed by the whole sex industry. The exploitation, misuse and abuse would be so much less. The whole thing is based on that basic misconception of who we really are, and then from there take it that they have an exclusive right to use, abuse, or misuse their body as they like.

.

If their sexual activity were focused on the purpose of the progenitive function

their fulfillment/satisfaction with sex, as well as the quality of the nature of their relationships would be much more full.

.

When we talk of Spiritual Sex we are not talking of some Tantrik sexual gratificational exercise that has become popularised by some lusty people. We are talking of sex-life that is ordained by the Lord in the scriptures, that is empowered and embellished by the loving functionary aspect of Godhead called Kandarpa (Bhagavad Gita As It Is, 10:28. and purport) or Kaamadev (Cupid) (Srimad Bhagavatam 10:55:1 purport.) one of the eternal associates of the Lord (Srimad Bhagavatam 3:1:28., purport). Thus according to the revealed scriptures, and our experience "Lord Viñëu lives in the form of Kämadeva, only for the satisfaction of His devotees" as kämadeva-svarüpeëa (Srimad Bhagavatam 5:18:5.) Although this Kämadeva is viñëu-tattva, His body is not spiritual but material like ours (Brahmäëòa puräëa: kämadeva-sthitaà viñëum upäste).

.

The people of today want Safe-Sex. Safe from what? Safe from bad reaction - coming in the form of diseases. But actually the only Safe Sex in that case is that sex which is bound and endorsed with love that follows religious principles. All other sex-life one is bound to the actions and reactions of the material world in the form of karma. So if you want not only Safe-Sex, but Super Spiritual Sex then do it according to the Lord's direction. We are not against sex, but we are against sex that brings from it unwanted, neglected, diseased and or insipid children (varnasankara), who end up as a burden to not only the parents but the entire society.

.

We are also against the loose casual sex that aides the spread of so much STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). Diseases which come not only because of the nature of the sex, but also because of the quality of the sex as far as it being the sinful reactions for it.

However, anything that is done in a healthy - in union with the desire of the Lord. When anything is done under the sanction of the Lord all of his energies pervade it. From all of His administrative heads they give their blessings - this is the REAL Wholistic Approach that is so much desired and required, but so many are ignorant of.

.

"Laksmidevi (the Goddess of Fortune) advises all devotees who approach the Lord with material desires that according to her practical experience, the Lord is Kämadeva, and thus there is no need to ask Him for anything material. She says that everyone should simply serve the Lord without any motive. Since the Supreme personality of Godhead is sitting in everyone's heart, He knows everyone's thoughts, and in due course of time He will fulfil all desires. Therefore let us completely depend on the service of the Lord without bothering Him with our material requests".

(A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Srimad Bhagavatam 5:18:21. purport.)

Religious sex is specifically for bringing into the world good progeny, for the benefit of all of us. Furthermore intelligent persons who can control their senses and desires opt for abstinence rather than wanton fulfilment of lusty desires, and the reactions that come from it. Likened to an honest citizen who honours others rights, and a criminal who only thinks of him/herself.

Lord Rishabhadeva, an incarnation of Krishna, warned,

"People are mad after sense gratification. When a person considers sense gratification the aim of life, he certainly becomes mad after materialistic living and engages in all kinds of sinful activity. He does not know that due to his past misdeeds he has already received a body, which, although temporary, is the cause of his misery. Actually, the living entity should not have taken on a material body, but he has been awarded the material body for sense gratification. Therefore, I think it not befitting an intelligent man to involve himself again in the activities of sense gratification, by which he perpetually gets material bodies one after another. As long as one does not inquire about the spiritual values of life, one is defeated and subjected to miseries arising from ignorance. Be it sinful or pious, karma has its resultant actions. If a person is engaged in any kind of karma, his mind is called karmatmaka, or colored with fruitive activity. As long as the mind is impure, consciousness is unclear, and as long as one is absorbed in fruitive activity, he has to accept a material body. When the living entity is covered by the mode of ignorance, he does not understand the individual living being and the supreme living being, and his mind is subjugated to fruitive activity. Therefore, until one has love for God, he is certainly not delivered from having to accept a material body again and again."

(Srimad Bhagavatam 5.5.4–6)

from the purport:

Krishna conscious persons should not engage in illicit sex, i.e. sex outside of marriage or sex not for the purpose of conceiving a child. It should also be noted that abortion carries a special karmic reaction—those who participate in killing unborn children may be placed in the womb of a mother who chooses abortion and themselves be slaughtered in the same horrible way. But if one agrees to no longer commit such sinful acts, one can become freed from karmic reaction by inoffensive devotional chanting of the holy names of God.

1) Realize That You Have a Problem

You have to become aware and then convinced that you have a problem, and that the problem is causing you harm. Realize that you are being harmed by sex-indulgence, both physically and spiritually. Come to admit that you are having some difficulty overcoming it.

2) Become Convinced Of the Value of Self Control

You have to become intellectually firm in the conviction that sex indulgence is bad for you, and sexual self-control good for you. There are two effective ways to convince yourself.

First, become more self aware. Notice your inner state before you have an orgasm, and your inner state after losing out. ("Losing out" is a good term for male sex indulgence.) Apply your subtle awareness and you will realize that your have been changed spiritually. You have lost a kind of soul power. Even though it seems subtle to you, the change is profound and significant. If you can't sense the inner feelings yet, notice how you behave very differently after losing out. You lose interest in many things once interesting. You feel less confident, less courageous, less resilient. You are more irritable and prone to negative thoughts. You may feel a temporary sense of relaxation or relief, but you are now on a much lower plane in terms of purpose, focus, and inner power. This is in fact the "male period."

We know how much the female period affects her. Become aware of how it affects you in just the same way. Most men turn to outer obsessions and distractions to cover up the feeling of emptiness and demoralization that follows this loss. We turn immediately to drink, drugs and any possible thrill trying to fill the new void that is created. Men today are not taught the intelligent natural truth about their orgasm. So they don't have any intellectual expectation of this change. Still the negative change occurs. The male does not cognize what is happening, and this adds to his confusion. He tells himself that he should feel good; and that he feels no negative change at all. Nobody else expects him to be in a state of weakness. The female especially, who is ignorant because of male ignorance, thinks that the male should be "walking on air" after his orgasm. All expect him to be able to proceed as before. But the true inward demoralization is there. The usual weight of family, wifely, and female expectations feels heavier than before. Thus guilt and confusion is piled on top of the profound weakness he has already created. He tries to cover it up with extreme behavior and thrills. Or he gets angry and snappy. It is no wonder that men are at their worst, and do their most ignoble actions, right after orgasm.

It is really incredible today how western culture is brain-dead on this subject. One can see post-orgasm demoralization very clearly in a dog! Recently I was out walking my peppy, precocious dog and I noticed he wasn't behind me. I went back and found him. He was just sitting like a slug in the middle of the trail, not wanting to go further. His eyes looked glazed over. He is always peppy and eager on our walks. He never lies down. It was very weird. He just lay there looking pathetic. Then I noticed that he had a huge erection and had just had a big seminal discharge. (He had no doubt sniffed some female pheromones somewhere.) The fact that western culture is oblivious to all this, is just one indicator of how out-of-touch we are from Nature. If we were a wise culture, it would be expected for males to more-or-less slink away and hide for 24 hours after an orgasm.

So you, don't be unaware like this. Become keenly aware of the spiritual devastation that follows orgasm.

Secondly -- and this is the really wild thing -- note carefully what happens in your life within a day or two of orgasm. You will probably find that some kind of bad news develops. Often it will be in the first 24 hours. In many cases the news will be disturbing or even traumatic, and have to do with your personal life. This is the immediate consequence of breaking, again, the original spiritual law. If you are good at astrology, you can find out where your Pluto sits in the chart. Usually the new problem will take place quite obviously in the "house" where Pluto sits and rules. If you can become skillful at life observation, the negative outer changes will become obvious to you. Those who have been doing some restraint for a while will see them more clearly.

(Those who are sunk in sexing are generally so swamped by negative conditions, the new developments have less contrast.)

These two practices: subtle observation of your inner state, and observation of new outer conditions, will help convince you of the harm of sexual loss. Meanwhile, there is much literature you can read to firm up your conviction. You need to feed on this golden literature constantly!

You have entertained all kinds of false philosophies; you have been deluded by mass media and modern mass values, so you have to cut away all this wild overgrowth from the forest of your mind. To do this, keep reading materials that speak to the subject.

Also speak to men who are confirmed in this view. Give them your arguments and misgivings. Let them keep untying those knots in your mind.

One of the karmic consequences of sexual sin, in fact, is that you are made confused and unable to see what is sitting right in front of you. But your effort at restraint will clear the way. Keep hacking down the wild weeds of misunderstanding with the sharp machete of intellect and discrimination. You have to intellectually convince yourself of the merit of this path, until you stop arguing with yourself about it.

3) Ask God For Help

Sex becomes an addiction just like any other sensual pleasure. But sex addiction is very powerful, a lot like addiction to a powerful drug, say heroin. You have to come to a point where you realize that you have a problem and that you are not winning the battle on your own. To actually get out of the claws of sex addiction, you will need divine help.

The Divinity has no addictions. The Divine Being is completely addiction-free. You are going to have to get experience with a bliss far greater than sex pleasure, and this is found through contact with the Divinity. You are going to need to attract the Divine to yourself somehow, and ask Him to fight by your side. So step three involves having a heart-to-heart talk with your concept of the Divine.

The Divinity incarnates through human beings called "gurus, saints,Manifestations of God," Christ. This is so we can have a conceptual handle for the mind; something to address ourselves to and follow. He does this out of compassion for us, in the same way a compassionate mother would provide many ways for us to find our way home.

The yogic sages say: "You use a horse to catch another horse, and a cow to catch another cow, etc." For this reason God incarnates in a human form because we humans are capable of greatest attraction to another human form. He places these Divine Incarnations generously in every clime and every period, just as a mother would leave many "care packages" and maps in a forest to help a lost child. It is not hard to find a saint or God-man if you believe in them.

So just get into your mind some Divine Form that you trust; some saint or guru or holy person. Maybe this will be based on your childhood training; maybe it will be Jesus Christ. Maybe it will be just the general term "God." You have to choose the symbol that you relate to the most; the one that you can have some faith in. Faith is very important here. You have to have faith that you can overcome your sex addiction, and that there is a transcendental being somewhere that can help.

In this step, you need to speak out loud to this transcendental being, in this manner:

"Lord, I see that I have a problem. I see that I have become addicted to sex and it is hurting me. I want to overcome this problem. I believe that I need your help in this. Please help me overcome this problem, and come back to you. Please forgive me for all of the sin I have committed by sexing. I was unaware. I didn't have good teaching. Now I see that it is destroying me. I am willing to make effort now to overcome this sin and this problem. But please help me and give me ways, through your Divine Power, to truly overcome it. Show me what I must do, how I must act, what I must learn. I have faith that you can save me and destroy this terrible addiction in me."

You have to arrive at a day where you speak in this way to the Lord of the Universe. Do in out loud, in a heartfelt and sincere way. At the same time, you need to make a significant change and show sincerity about your intentions. You need to take some actions that represent your sincere willingness to "renounce."

4) Get Rid of Self-Inflicted Sex Stimulation

If you have a collection of pictures, throw them out. If they are paper, shred them and burn them. Make a ceremony out of it. Say prayers and talk to your Divinity as you do it. Put a picture or form of your Deity beside you as you do it. If your material is on a computer, in digital form, erase it all with no possibility of retrieval. Don't send them somewhere else where you could later get to them. Don't encrypt them. Just erase, erase, erase. This is the only way that you can prove to the Divinity that you really mean business.

If you have memberships in porn sources, cancel them all. If you have bookmarks to porn sites, erase them all. Also, ask the Lord God to erase even the memories of those urls or addresses from your mind. If you get emails or have subscriptions, cancel them all. If you get emails that look like porn emails, just delete them as fast as you can without even registering them.

Stop watching T.V. shows or movies that are sexually stimulating. Stop renting any videos that are sexy.

If you tend to go places where you are aroused -- like certain bars or dance clubs in your town -- stop going. If you have to actually leave town and move away, that is what you should do. These are hard habits to break. If you have been going to certain places near your town, you may have to actually move away to break that habit. But this is so important, this is what you must do if necessary.

Stop hanging out with people who indulge these addictions, or look at sex material, or who talk about sexual things, or who go to places that arouse. Just break those relationships. Ignore those people. It is that important.

You need to make a clean break at this time. It is going to be difficult even when you do this. But this is the way that you attract some grace and let God know you mean business. You will still have the problem of memories; images that are in your mind. This is a deeper problem. At this time, you will have to ask God to begin to erase these from your mind. Imagine them as a wound that begins to heal, or a rut that was dug into the ground. Now things begin to grow in it; nature begins to fill it in. All of these memories are going to be erased from your mind and body. Have faith in that.

Try to get into the habit of not looking at the rear ends, hips, or breasts of females when you see them. If a female is dressed in a sexy way, avoid looking at her. If females want to get the looks of men, then let them work for it a little. Let them make an effort at modesty, and refrain from looking like cattle prods to the male libido. If more men preferred that women dress with some class, they would do it.

Finally, if you are taking any drugs or herbs that increase your sex arousal needlessly, you will have to work on getting off of those in a natural way.

5) Begin Doing the Mula Bandha

This is an important and profound yogic practice that you should begin doing right away, and continue doing as much as possible. You contract your anus, and the whole area from the anus to the navel, and draw it up towards your spine. This practice will give physical aid in beating sex addiction, as well as occult spiritual aid. It will also begin to improve your outer karma immediately.

By doing the Mula Bandha, you are engaging in the exact opposite practice from sexing. In sexing, you are sending energy to your lower centers. In sexing, you are enlarging the physical and astral channels that flow downward in the lower centers. With the Mula Bandha, you begin doing the opposite thing. You begin to contract the physical and astral channels below. You begin to lift the creative energy back up and arrest its downward flow, both physically and astrally.

By sexing you have engorged your lower organs and chakras, sending inordinate energy down there for a long time. So now you need to do the opposite, and for a long time. Doing the Mula Bandha is doing the opposite.

You can do the Mula Bandha any time, anywhere. You can do it both sitting and standing. The first time you do it, you should be sitting. You basically tighten your anal sphincter muscles, just like you when you are trying to avoid going pee, or avoiding defecation. You just pull in as firmly as you can, for as long as you can.

The first time you do this may be a strange or amazing experience. You may experience a kind of "electrical charge" in your mind, sort of putting you into a strange, exhilarated state while doing it. It may even seem like a kind of mind jolt. Your mind seems to spin. This is because you are withdrawing a huge amount of energy from that area back up to your brain and higher chakras. If you do it on a daily basis and cut down on sexing, the jolt will become less great. To feel this strange charge in your mind during the Mula Bandha is a good sign. Imagine, as you pull up, that you are withdrawing all energy up your spine and out the top of your head. Imagine that your sex desire is now being "flown as a kite" -- on a string up your spine and out through your head. Imagine that you are offering that sex energy up as an offering to the Deity, like fruit laid out on a beautiful plate. Inwardly say, "Here, I give this to you. It is all for you. Whatever enjoyment could be mine, I now give it to You. I don't want it anymore. I prefer You to that. Take it, and please do with it what You will." When you do this bandha, speak inwardly to the Divinity in that manner.

It may sound childlike to address the Deity simply and sincerely. But to be childlike is a great advantage in dealing with God. The Deity is "more human" that we are, and responds to sincerity immediately. The Deity is the very source of personality. The very existence of your own "personality" springs from His. A mystic once said: "He Who made the ears, shall He not hear?" Know that God hears your sincere words and thoughts just like the kindest Mother, and He will be very impressed with your efforts in this. Another saying of the mystics is: "Every time you take one step toward God, He takes a thousand steps toward you." He will cover the distance for you.

After you get used to doing it, get better and better at it. Pull more steadily, firmly, and continuously. Pull only moderately at the beginning so that you don't pull or pop anything down there. If you overdo it and try to contract too strongly at first, you could create a hemorrhoid. (This is more of a possibility when holding in a bellyful of air -- another yogic practice. But to be on the safe side, be gentle and don't overdo it at the beginning.) At first you will only be able to do it for a moment. With time you will be able to stay pulling for longer periods. Get so you can stay pulled up like that for a minute, two minutes, five, etc. Do it when you're walking, in the car, at the office -- and especially when you are losing control of your arousal.

By doing the Mula Bandha you actually begin to "drain the swamp" of your sin and bad karma. You are draining the ignorant and dualistic astral karma that has been seeping down there. You have deposited a great quantity of sin and dark energy there, now you are draining the old, and sending the new, up to God to burn and transmute. By doing this a lot you can begin to see positive changes in your external world. You are turning back from sin; shrinking your sexual organ instead of enlarging it. You are going back to the state of childhood.

Wherever your planet Pluto lies -- in whatever astrological house -- you will have generated much stress, turmoil, and trauma there by sexing. Now as you do the Mula Bandha, you will begin to see these troubles and toils drain away from that astrological house. For example, maybe you live where Pluto is in your Third House. You probably have problems with communications, receive threatening letters. You have many hard drive crashes, get hacked, have viruses -- it ruins your business, etc. With a 3rd House Pluto you may even develop problems seeing, hearing, or getting around. But now by doing the Mula Bandha these problems will dry up. Or maybe you have Pluto in 8th, so you are always getting involved the lawsuits, the tax collector, and life-and-death survival struggles. These problems will begin to fade.

By doing the Mula Bandha you will stop having that roiling feeling of fullness, rawness, or aliveness down in your sex organ. Your sex organ will stop bothering you; stop "calling" to you. Instead of feeling like an open wound that bleeds, the area will come to feel very cool and quiet. This is what you want. Eventually, if you stop entertaining sex thoughts in your mind, your sex organ will cease generating sperm. Then all of that energy will be directly sublimated to other centers of your body and to your mind. Your mind will begin to become very powerful.

Women will benefit from this practice in the same way as men.

With the Mula Bandha you are beginning to master the prana in your body; the subtle energy beneath grosser physical forms. Your sexual energy is like the Master Bank Account of prana. Before, you were like an open gusher, spilling it on the ground as complete waste. Now you are going to take charge of it, learn to direct it, and let it do great things for you. All yogis who tread the highest path of God Realization, incidentally, must master this bandha. So you will be getting free of sex damage, plus building your launch pad for spiritual epiphanies.

6) Cut Down on Caffeine

The less caffeine you drink, the less horny you will feel, especially at night. Don't drink "decaf" -- it's like a stronger version. (The homeopathic principle kicks in, where a more subtle dilution of a substance acts in a more profound way.) If you are a coffee drinker, begin cutting down the number of cups, and only drink it in the morning. Your goal should be to eventually get completely off caffeine or any similar stimulant. These stimulate the lower chakras and make you stay "horny."

7) Try to Spend Less Time Around Females

This one is difficult for a married man, or one with daughters around. But if you really want to become firm, you have to pursue this one to the extent possible.

The ideal situation for a married man is to sleep in a bed separate from his wife. But only the most enlightened and educated wives can understand this and not take offense. If you have daughters or female relatives, you should keep some distance from them and not be around them intimately. Even though a normal father feels no attraction to his daughters, the human body is the human body. It tends to have its own agenda. Any female body around you will be having some degree of subconscious impact on your male body.

Try to cultivate male relationships. Hang out with men instead of women. As you overcome sex addiction, this will become natural to do. You will begin to see other males in the way you did when you were a boy -- as actually more attractive and interesting as people. Men prefer to hang out with women only because they are heavily sexualized and they enjoy relating to others only through that sex charge. As you become restrained, you will notice again that men are heroic and intelligent and you will prefer to be with them.

When dealing with females in the public realm, try to keep some traditional decorum and avoid "easy familiarity" with them. My habit is to avoid looking at females in public altogether, especially if they are badly dressed. I say "hello" only when necessary and only when they are decently dressed. I avoid talking to women at all unless we have been properly introduced. Even then I won't talk to her if she is badly dressed. This is the old culture of our ancestors, and worth reviving again. Young men today are completely at the mercy of the female and are continually being sexually harassed by her ways of dressing and acting. It used to be that the culture gave some protection to young men. Again, when you encounter females dressed in provocative ways -- without any respect for the male sex nature -- just avoid looking at them. Don't allow them to sexually harass you.

If you are one of my female readers, you can of course apply this to yourself by cutting back on your contact with men. Women become coarse by too much contact with men, and lose the female culture.

8) Learn About Meditation and Cultivate Devotion

This is the great secret weapon against sex addiction. This is the Cadillac technique, which will surely free you of all sin and all sex addiction. What happens in meditation is that you experience a joy that is much higher than the thrill of orgasm, though it is usually more subtle. With time you come to prefer the bliss of meditation to the coarser bliss of sex orgasm. Then later you will become aware that the lower thrill of sex pollutes you in such a way that you are unable to contact the finer bliss of meditation.

Overcoming sex addiction is like developing higher, more refined tastes. Meditation will give you the ultimate thrill, beyond compare with sex. It will also give you a lot of merit and attract grace, which will give you further ammunition against all addictions, including sex addiction.

I say "learn about" meditation, because it is good for you to have some understanding, some respect, and some reverence for it before you launch into it. The more respect and reverence you have for it before hand, the more you will finally get out of it. The subject of meditation is too big for this section, and will be addressed elsewhere and in other of my books such as "Gifts Of The Mystic." But here are a few points about meditation that you should ponder so that you begin having a proper respect for it.:

1) Meditation is the ultimate form of prayer.

2) In meditation you finally give your All to the Lord, because you give to Him your very mind, and that is your all-and-all. In meditation you work toward a state of full surrender to the transcendental Lord.

3) In meditation you still your thoughts, which means you clear out all false idols that are distracting your attention from the Divinity. Our thoughts are our false idols and are full of worldly desires and impressions. In normal consciousness we are, in a sense, worshiping our thoughts. We chase after them endlessly. But the Ultimate God is beyond thought. The ultimate Lord is beyond conceptualizations.

4) God is ultimate stillness beyond vibration. Out of the vibrationless comes all vibration and phenomena. When you still your mind, therefore, you come close to God and come to know His nature.

5) Sages who meditated well found the creative source within. They tried to describe its nature as "Being, Consciousness and Bliss." In meditation we come into contact with His pure Being, infinite consciousness, and ineffable bliss. By contacting that, we ourselves come to be more like that. We ourselves come to be more and more divine, as his true sons should be. It is a simple law that we become like whatever we associate with.

6) In meditation you find true fulfillment for the mind. You find a pleasure that is beyond compare with all earthly thrills, preoccupations, and pleasures. This breaks the hold of all addictions over you, including sex addiction.

"Devotion" is mentioned as part of this last step. To learn more about devotion go to bhakti-yoga.info, or get my book "Gifts Of The Mystic." In short, if you cultivate an attitude of devotion toward your chosen deity, you will make much greater progress in sex purification and in meditation. Devotion is an emotional attitude of faith, desire, trust, and longing. We cultivate these attitudes toward things of the world, and toward women, our mothers, etc. But in spiritual devotion we cultivate that attitude toward our chosen Deity, whether this is Christ, our guru, Krisna, or some other holy saint. Devotion is really the greatest secret of the higher spiritual life. It is a great mystery and a great Gift. If you feel that you don't have devotion, then you can pray to your guru or deity and ask Him/Her to give you greater devotion. As you turn sincerely to a higher divine life, you will have experiences of God. One of the experiences of God is deep peace and subtle bliss. You will have other proofs of his presence in your life. When you have these experiences, you are getting some good reasons to have devotion to God. You will begin to feel gratitude and devotion naturally. Thus a true feeling of devotion will grow through your actual experiences with the Divine Father. Until then, just a pinch of faith will do to start.

9) Analyze the Female

This is an old practice used by the Hindu and Buddhist sages to help you see past the sexual allure of the female. There are many ways you can "analyze the female" until her bewitching impact just dies.

Realize how her youth gives her a fleeting allure; she'll only be that way a short time. In her springtime nature tries to get some new babies coming along, by making her look that way so that she can draw in foolish males. The world has plenty enough babies, and the thrill of sex with her will come and go, and leave you wasted. Visualize how much she'll sap your bank account, probably sue you some day, and rob you of both material and occult wealth. All for that pretty face that fades so fast. See her as a pretty flower that is poisonous. Here are some examples of how to analyze the female:

1) Age her in your mind. Imagine what her face will look 30 years from now. Picture her at 40, 50, 60, and so on. Imagine how much less sexy she'll be as an old hag. Think how she'll look as her eyes sink in a little, her cheeks sag, etc. Visualize her rear when it sags and gets flat; her breasts when they deflate and droop. She'll start stinking, and you'll have to smell that strong chemical she uses to cover it up. She's headed for death. She's a sure case of "bait and switch." See her laid out in the coffin some day. Realize that's where her body's heading. It can help a great deal if you can see a photo of an older female relative, such as her mother or a sister. The older the better. You'll be able to get a good sense of what she'll look like when she's older. Even ten years of age will take away most of the charm of a female in her teens or twenties. Think that this is what she is already, now.

2) Ponder why her red lips make you attracted, and why she likes to make her lips red: a) it conveys to your body that she is healthy and could bear strong young, b) Red lips suggest she is in a fit of passion (like a cat in heat) and feeling "sexy," the blood rushing to her face and lips. c) She wants to make you aware of her lips up above so that she can later get you interested in her less attractive "lips down below." You could only get interested in those in a state of madness; that is why she sets before you her upper lips. Framed by a pretty face, with cute talk coming from them, they seem interesting. But they are just two worms on a vicious hook. She paints her lips because she wants you really aware of "lips," to do that bait-and-switch on you.

3) Pink cheeks are the same. They make you think she has good circulation and is in good health, thus to make babies. Flush cheeks imply she is pure and sensitive; that she is capable of blushing, which makes you feel she is pure and innocent like a child. She knows you are attracted to that purity, so she paints on fake "blush" to make herself seem healthy; and innocent enough to blush. Before the proliferation of makeup, girls who wanted to attract used to pinch their cheeks to redden them, all for the same reasons of psycho-genetic manipulation of the gullible male. Even old women are trying to scam you with rouged up cheeks! (Men are in such a pathetic state today, even the driest old prunes think they can pull you.) Even if her blush is real, soon she'll lose her innocence, become hard and jaded, and pursue of pleasure, fame, money. Her desires will be insatiable. Her innocence will soon be lost. Then you won't find her attractive.

4) Her rounded rear and legs say: She has some fat in her to get through the winter; she can bear and feed some young 'uns. All her rounded parts are just fat deposits that tell your mammalian mind that she is fit to bear young and get through a winter and nurse them. That's why your body gets a charge out of it. Your body is set on stupid mode when it sees her rounded fatty deposits.

5) Why has the female smeared that glistening gloss all over her lips? To make them seem wet, like the lips down below. Also it brazenly suggests semen, so she is conveying to you the sodomy sin which hooks men like fish on a jagged hook. See how awful she is? So brazenly she tries to pull you down to the lowest sexual ideas! Why has she made her nails long and red? To make you think of piercing, and blood. Or black: She wants you to know she is wicked; she is open to evil. See how easy it is to correctly deconstruct the female? It's all really obvious, it's embarrassing. She should be so embarrassed. Why does she wear high heels? Besides trying to fake the stature of a man, it makes her rear end sashay in a "sexy" (lust-inducing) way when she walks. Just like female fish waggle things about when trying to attract the male.

6) Realize her body is full of the various cruds that makes up the human body (this is a favorite of the Asian sages). Excrement is sitting in her, all sorts of fatty deposits, weird impurities and drugs, gristle and bone, etc. She has bacteria in her mouth, and when she wakes up it stinks. Even if she seems pretty, there is even more putrid bacteria in her lower orifices. She farts and defecates just like any animal. Try to visualize her skeleton beneath the skin, muscle, fat and fascia. See, she's not really a turn-on after all.

7) When you have the misfortune to see a media-slut staring at you from the cover of a supermarket magazine, or in some photo or video, it can be especially fun to deconstruct her because she is so obvious. Why does she wear that tossled-haired style? She wants to suggest to you that she has just climbed out of her bed; that you are right in her intimate quarters, that she just came from a romp in bed. Why does she wear underthings like slips as outer clothes? To make you feel that she is already undressed in front of you. Why is the little tart showing us her tongue, or even sticking it out? Women like to show their tongues to subconsciously suggest to you her similar epithelial tissues down below, and to make you think about the possibility of it licking your member. How gross the are! Why is she parting her mouth slightly and showing a bit of her tongue? Same reason. Why does J. Lopez and B. Spears pump and grind their pelvis that way? It's obviously sexual motion; she is simulating copulation. Why is she sitting with her legs spread out that way? Doesn't she know it is crude, unladylike, and oh so obvious? Men rarely spread their legs in photos. She is "doing the Flynt" for us. How gross! (It's incredible how many actresses have done "the Flynt" for the camera.) Why is the media-whore bending down as if she is on all fours? She wants you to think of doing the "doggy style" thing. Geez. How low can she get? Why is she holding that phallic object near her mouth? Obvious. Why does the actress from "Sex In The City" wear a dress with the Empire State Building emblazoned up across her front. Phallic suggestions again. Why does she wear that barbaric piercing? It suggests "I've been pierced," or "I can be pierced." Why is her waistline so low? Obvious -- she is tempting you, teasing you by getting close showing her absurd pubiscus. And so on and so forth.

Get to be an expert at deconstructing female attractions in this way. Analyze her until you see she is just a pile of bones. It will help a lot.

You can add to this the fact that she is probably vainer than a super model, takes for granted that you are a dog she can lead around on a string, is morally compromised, ethically dangerous, culturally bankrupt, philosophically impaired, seething with desires for fame and power, and about as deep as an "Archie" comic book. She will leave you as soon as she gets bored, or sees a cuter face, or a bigger wallet.

Women with a lust problem can apply these same ideas to deconstructing the male body if they please.

All this gives you vairagya, or dispassion. Vairagya (dispassion) is the opposite of passion. One needs vairagya toward the female in order to get free of sex addiction. One needs vairagya toward all worldly thrills in order to get samadhi and enlightenment. Getting this dispassion toward the female breaks the Gordian knot of addiction to all the world. With vairagya toward the female, you can get vairagya toward all false pleasures. So the above exercises are a very great work.

10) Understand Your Own Psychology;

Know Your Special Vulnerability "Buttons"

A set of psychological circumstances often acts as a prelude to sex desire. Seeing sexy stimulation is the big obvious one, and we have dealt with that one. But inner emotional conditions put a man in a state where he wants to seek out the sex thrill. By learning about your worst triggers you can go far toward conquering illicit lust.

For many, feelings of depression, guilt, or shame are the trigger. We then use the sex thrill as a mood-altering distraction or false "medication" to cover our inner pain. Overcoming those feelings of depression or guilt then will go a long way toward freeing you from sex addiction. Meditation is one of the ways one can successfully fight depression. Doing your duty as much as possible is the best way to fight feelings of guilt.

Sometimes anger is involved; we are pissed off at a situation, and this morphs into depression or shame. This is a strong setup to make a man want sex. We use it as a drug to dilute the negative feelings with something positive.

My biggest "trigger" is when I feel I should celebrate because something has gone well or I have received very good news. There is a "spring fever" feeling that affects any man at that time. When you feel that nature is supporting you, "fruit is on the vine," and "the harvest is in" -- it strikes a primal nerve toward procreation. Your body and spirit say: "Nature's bounty is in; you are supported. You can expand a little now. You can afford to have children." There is the added dimension that I feel I deserve a reward for my good outcomes. This trigger is my worst enemy. But when we slip and Lose Out under this positive influence, the result is just the same. We feel just as foolish and filled with intelligent regret.

Another setup is simple curiosity. "I wonder what those fools are doing now?" Just bored moments when you feel a desire for some kind of thrill to break some monotony. Or, "I wonder how bad the porn is now? Maybe I should do some research to see how corrupt they are getting." This kind of curiosity is a sure trap and "kills the cat." A thousand baths won't make you feel clean again.

Analyze yourself whenever you slip, and get familiar with the inner setups that make you trip. When they start developing, reorient yourself, break the pattern, and disperse those emotional setups.

11) Connect with Men Who Practice Moral Restraint and Celibacy

Whatever and whoever you hang out with, you become like that. It happens in imperceptible ways, and even on a subtle plane. Associations and environment are a stronger influence than willpower for most. Develop a cadre of enlightened men for friends.

Keep it in! Become a sage. Become great.

Blessings and many saints for our nation,

Julian Lee
