Animal rights

"Flesh eating is simply immoral, as it involves the performance of an act which is contrary to moral feeling: killing. By killing, man suppresses in himself, unnecessarily, the highest spiritual capacity, that of sympathy and pity towards living creatures like himself and by violating his own feelings becomes cruel."

Song of Peace

We are the living graves of murdered beasts,

Slaughtered to satisfy our appetites.

We never pause to wonder at our feasts,

If animals, like men, can possibly have rights.

We pray on Sundays that we may have light,

To guide our footsteps on the path we tread.

Were sick of war,we do not want to fight-

The thought of it now fills our hearts with dread,

And yet - we gorge ourselves upon the dead.

Like carrion crows, we live and feed on meat,

Regardless of the suffering and pain

We cause by doing so, if thus we treat

Defenceless animals for sport or gain,

How can we hope in this world to attain

The PEACE we say we are so anxious for.

We pray for it, o’er hecatombs of slain,

To God, while outraging the moral law

Thus cruelty begets its offspring – WAR

Nice quotes Babhru. It does seem that character is changed gradually by continually moving in a certain direction. Perhaps leading to an epiphany like the hunter that got the grace of Narada Muni, or many of the disciples of Srila Prabhupada, but for most of us it may be more incrementally.

We know that cruelty does inherit the Kingdom Of the Lord.

From beliefnet.com :

We want to help in some way. But we are not the type to go on the street and picket or demonstrate. So what to do? Plenty.

PETA has this section on their web site called action alerts. They have done the research on various situations and provide a way for us to work together in a more focused and concentrated way to bring about effective change.

They provide phone #'s, mailing and email addresses to the appropiate person for each action that is being undertaken as well as tips on writting an effective letter, which always include being polite.

Even if a person just made one effort like this a week,in a year that is 52 substantial communications to people and organizations that can bring about real change. Added to the fact that you yourself are living a cruelty free/less lifestyle and you can be assured that you are doing much to bring about a more compassionate world.

One voice is not insignificant. One voice is powerful, especially when added to a million more.

Check it out: http://www.peta.org/alert/index.asp

God bless
