Find A Multiple Use Vitamin

If you take a daily vitamin, and you've decided you really need extra vitamin C and extra calcium on a daily basis, you have two choices. You can take several different pills, or you can find a good multivitamin/multimineral that supplies those extra ingredients. Most drugstores and grocery stores carry vitamins that have specific formulas, such as one for women that contains extra folic acid, calcium, and vitamin C. By now you should know how much and which specific ingredients you need. I can't stand taking more than one or two pills a day, so I have a daily multivitamin that reflects several of my needs, including extra calcium. You can get a mail-order catalog that will have more choices in it than your average drugstore, or you can go to a local health food store. You don't have to take a daily vitamin plus five other pills with all of the multiple-ingredient choices available today.

Natural Health Tip of the Day

Wednesday May 8, 2002

Eat Your Vitamins

Although I've discussed vitamins and supplements for several tips, the first way you should get anything for natural health is through your food. This is hard for many people because it means you'll have to do some work.

Do you know which foods are high in folate? (Beets are one choice.)

Or which are high-alkaline foods? (Beet greens, dandelion greens, spinach, and raisins are all high-alkaline foods.)

There are many books on the market that will provide lists of what foods have which vitamins and minerals. All you need is one good vitamin book and you're on your way to eating your supplements, rather than taking them in pill form.

You can do this with your remedies as well. For example, if you know you need garlic during the cold and flu season, start eating meals that are high in garlic content. And for some things, such as fiber, there is little reason to take pills when you can easily get what you need in your diet from a wide variety of foods.

Breakfast Scores Again

One more reason to eat breakfast is that you can get at least 25 percent of the vitamins and minerals we require daily from most cereals. And some, such as Total, give you 100 percent of many nutrients. Keep one fact in mind, however: The process of fortifying cereals involves "spraying" the nutrients onto the cereal, which means many vitamins and minerals end up in the milk you pour on your cereal. So forget about etiquette. Pick up that bowl and slurp up the last bit of milk, for your health's sake!

Dieting Tip of the Day

CHROMIUM

In the last few months, you've probably heard a lot about chromium, the element that appears in many over-the-counter diet aids and vitamins. However, the chromium found in many vitamins is inorganic. And even though many foods contain chromium, you probably couldn't eat enough of these foods to gain any benefits.

A better source for your chromium is GTF (glucose tolerance factor). It's organic and is touted as being easily absorbed by the body. It helps the body control the blood's fat and sugar levels. GTF is available at most health food stores. As always, please check with your physician before using this or any other over-the-counter supplements.

Healthy Diet As Important For Women As Men

The majority of studies comparing diet and heart disease have been performed on men. However, in a study of more than 69,000 women published in the August 13 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers reported that a healthy diet can lower a woman's risk of developing heart disease by as much as 36%. Previous studies have shown a similar correlation in men. The researchers described a healthy diet as one that is high in fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish, and poultry, but low in processed and red meats, desserts, refined grains, and high-fat dairy products. So, whether you are male or female, you will benefit from a healthier diet.

It's much better to take vitamin C seperately, for an optimum intake is between 3 and 10 grams per day. No way that will fit in one multivitamin pill.

The same applies to calcium & magnesium. If you want to get the proper amount, in the proper form (amino-chelate or citrate, anything but oxide and carbonate) there's no other way but taking them seperately. Calcium supplements are best taken in the evening.

If you want good health in later age, it's better to forget about getting everything from one pill, or through a so-called "balanced diet".

Ivar.
