sin_patas 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2002 an honest question: how can it be said that the human soul is eternal and unchangeable when at every moment it is accumulating karma, and is bound by it?
Rati 0 Report post Posted April 13, 2002 Very good question, indeed. If a diamond is encrusted with mud, one may not be able to detect its brillance and purity, because all that is visible is a lump of dirt. When the mud is washed away, then the spectacular gemstone is revealed. So, that is the nature of the atma (soul). The trick of maya (illusion) is that one in the material condition is spiritually blinded to one's true nature. The cause and effect nature of karma never actually effects the soul, just the physical body that the bewildered atma has falsely identified with. The Bhagavad Gita explains all of this in great depth. If you have not read it yet, then by all means do so at once.
xxvvii 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2002 I give you a metaphor. In order to buy sth. you need from a vendor (maayaa), you should pay some money (- phala); in order to get interests (+ phala), you should deposit some money. The value of money is illusively changed & the value of total property is unchanged. Thus soul can't be bound by karma.
