Guest guest
hi, i am curious to know about the sacred thread worn by priests. I read somewhere that if one wears 2 sets he is married? Is this true? another query- the term bhramacari - does it mean someone who is not married and dedicated to serving god. thanks.
Guest guest
Indian society was traditionally divided into four varnas (Brahmana (intellectuals), Kshatriya(Kings / administartors), Vaishya (Traders / Agriculturists) and Shudra (Labourers) with four ashramas.(Brahmacharya (Student life / Celibates), Grahasta (householders), Vanaprastha (Retirees) and Sanyas(Renunciates)). The first threee varnas were expected to follow the four ashramas. Today hardly anybody does. The sacred thread was the mark of entering the first stage viz. Brahmacharya, where the young human being is supposed to lead a life of simplicity, honesty, hardwork and celibacy. In the first stage it normally consists of 3 strings knotted together. After marriage another set of 3 is added. Once a family is started, a third set is added.
