Guest guest
When a baby's umbilical cord is cut, Hindus use to take a small piece of that cord, put it inside a small golden or silver enclousre and tie around the waist of the baby, in a golden, silver or simple rope. They believe that the mothers umbilical cord gives some kind of protection or assurance to the new born baby. I am not aware whether many modern day people do this, or even if they do, they just have the thread without the umbilical cord.
Guest guest
People in my region usually wear black or red thread around their waists. I don't know the religious significance, but I do know one of its famous practical purpose. It holds komanam or loin cloth securely /images/graemlins/smile.gif. It is not uncommon to find villagers roaming around with only loin cloth. In my opinion, this must have been the original intention of that rope, but with passage of time, people simply continue to wear it as a meaningless ritualistic symbol.
