Bombay Flood ... Disappointment.

The attitude of some Indians in face of their fellow Indians suffering in their own city is very disappointing and some what disturbing.

Majid Memon, a lawyer for a group of prominent residents of Bombay :

"Last week's disaster has exposed the city's inability to cope with such crisis," Memon said. "It is a manifestation of a larger problem — the manner in which we have ignored the basic interests of the people of Mumbai. If we can develop the technology to make nuclear bombs and launch satellites, why can't we build better drains, better roads, give our citizens better amenities?"

[/Qoute]

What he said is true ... if India can boost its pride in front of US, stating its an economical and nuclear superpower, then it should at least take care its own people.

[Qoute]

"It's a little unfair to attribute the problem to lack of disaster management," said Abheek Barua, chief economist at ABN Amro India. "If Singapore or London faced a downpour like what Bombay had last week, I would imagine the situation won't be much different. Those cities also would have been shut."

[/Qoute]

I don't think this person have ever been in London or Singapore before.

If people died for some preventable situation, the political leaders will be held responsible, like the shooting of the African in confusion a few weeks before. Who answered it? Blair himself, depended the Police actions for shooting (A SINGLE) Muslim for fearing he may had bomb on him.

In Singapore, if same situation occured, again, someone WILL be held responsible for it, and many times before, politicians have forced to resign from posts for failing in their duties.

In Japan, its even worse ... if a preventable accidence occured, the minister of that department IS required to step down in disgrace for not fullfilling their social duties.

Yet, over 1,000 people died and some people talk as if it is something common and politicians boost India's economic and military powers.

Unfortunately, what you say is quite true. It seems like it's in our blood. We always strive to boost our pride comparing ourselves to other nations, about acquiring military power, being a superpower, being this and that etc. but when it comes to improving the situations in our country, no one cares anymore. The political and justice system is so corrupt, it'd take a miracle for the whole thing to be cleansed. When people don't care about what happens to their brothers and sisters in the country, there's no hope for improvement. All we can do is just wait and see.

One of the reasons our costs of services are low in india is the reason of minimalist infrastructure. This minimalist infrastructure is also what sucks. A mere look at the city lights at the night will tell you how much power other cities (Shanghai, singapore) are burning as compared to mumbai.

What's not true is that other cities like singapore/london are more resilient to such problems than mumbai & other indian cities would. This is not true.

While singapore/london would have great infrastructure expense, there is no guarnatee that when disaster strikes they are going to be more resilient than cities in india.

The chances of resilience is high in india as we are a denser population than other countries. And in the end of the day, there is no help like the help from a fellow human being. This may also be the reason why we are more effective than other countries in foiling terrorist plots or catching terrorists. Simply fantastic, many many people, many many faces, many many people ringing the door bell, many many people to depend upon for a normal living.

Whatever mentioned in the Scriptures as the various signs of Kalikala (kali age) can be at once found in India eg: shudras ruling the country -like menons and demons however you call them . and ofcourse then thier statements also of that quality, no wonder

What I can say to anyone who comments on this is that its the matter of time , Kala , and this is the greatest changer. and the rest just follow him. There isnt a country in the world which is densly populated and the things as well managed that just doesnt go together. When the family is small then naturally it can be well managed and when it grows larger the mismanagement is the keyword.

If you see history(as you are very good at it) the very Bharatha has enjoyed the riches for AGES not for a few centuries and it has showd to the world how by being religious, spiritual, following the dharma and satyam a very good way of life can be lead for AGES .And now the very west shows how a destructive, non spiritual and materilstic HAPPY and yet very temporory life cud be lead for only FEW CENTURIES and that too with a lot of tumultous fearful atmosphere around.

The wordings like attitude of Indians or attitude of any ians do not make any sense as for a highly populated country nthing is so easy as one thinks.

While Man can sit and wait for changes (because of their own limitations) God will not. I believe He had already taken steps because I have seen changes is coming slowly to India.

India's fall into materialism and rejecting Spiritualims as basis is because of Colonial influence and also because of India choosing America as a role model.

First steps India can take is pushing aside this corrupted role model and choose another. I see India begin to look toward the East to Malaysia (where fellow Indians live) and toward Japan. This is a start in a step toward changes.

While it is true what you say, I believe if disasters struck in London and Singapore, the authorities will know what to do and how to do is faster.

From the news I see, it seems many of the help comes from local people (aided by Police and such), using crude materials and equipments and sere strength to save lives.

For a country which boost 7% economical growth and Nuclear and Stallite capabilities, India could at least provide some technology to save life, no?

The chances of resilience is high in india as we are a denser population than other countries. And in the end of the day, there is no help like the help from a fellow human being. Don't be so over-confident. USA also boosted the same way back in 1943 before Pearl Harbour and before the Sept-11 Incident.

But one thing I love about Indian Police is ... they don't cut any slacks in saving their homeland (unlike US's Armed forces). British following good example also - shoot first and ask later. /images/graemlins/grin.gif
