Zen is a variation of Buddhism, which exists in Japan.

When Buddhism arrived at Japan around 1100 AD, Shintosm is active there. Mixing both up, Zen Buddhism come to play while Shinto become official religion for Japan for a few centuries.

Basically, Zen Buddhism is something like what Kyastrias of Hindusm could follow - deattach oneself from the World, serve the master without questioning, and strive to life and die by honor.

I believe Hindu Kyastrias have a saying that "A Kyastria must strive to die in battle or in service to the Lord". Same thing here, except the Lord is also the Shogun (Emperors) who Shinto believes are descendant of Gods.
