Hey!

This is my 5th year doing it, i'm going to do it for 7 yrs. Like everyone has said it's a fast that you do for 5 days and on the 5th day you have to stay up till sunrise- "Jagran". During the 5 days you can only eat one meal, typically in the evening. Your meal cannot contain any salt what-so-ever and can only be dishes like potatos, mogo (casava),mango russ, raita. During the day you can eat frsh fruit, nuts and sweets like pendo and burfi etc. You can drink water, unsalted lassi, fresh fruit jucies and chai (tea) etc.

The fast is meant to be done with your heart and it's for the hope that you will be blessed with a good husband and have a hapy married life together - as well as the long life of your husband. Jaya Parvati vrat is done by girls from the age of 16+, married and unmarried. There's one called Mora Kat that's for younger girls.

You can either do pooja everyday, or you can do it all in one go on the 5th day. Normally Mandir's will have a big group sitting of girls who are following the vrat on the 5th day and evening you'll find garba taking place to help you stay up all night.

The story was that a couple went to Jaya Parvati beacause they cound't convieve a child, so she told the wife to eat no salt and nething containing wheat flour for 5 days ad to pray for the health of your husband. So the wife did this for 5 days and after that she was able to have a baby. So Parvati said that all women, who are married or not should do this for the health of their husband and for a happy healthy married life.
