Saathrena karmanee jeevethu vishaang vaapyaathapi dvija : |

|| from Vashista Smriti ||

 

Translation :

 

Brahmins should pursue occupation as specified in the sastras.

 

"Karnataka : sathalayangaa draavidaa maharashtrakaa : gujara (sourashtra) shethi pakshaiva dravida vidyadakshiney, yathra kanya pradhathanyaa thathra kaarya hee mojanam |

Puurva samakshitho marga : kaloo thyajya : prayathnath : || "

|| from Yagnavalkya Smriti ||

 

Translation :

 

In Yajnavalkya Smriti, the Brahmins have been permitted, in critical times, to pursue the occupation of krishi, shilpa, Bhriti, Seva, Viparna, Kusida etc. (the occupations of farmers, artisans and laborers etc.)
