Who is this man, is he really so famous in mumbai, india ?

i read this from www.thefridaytimes.com

Bombay’s famous speaker Dr Zakir Naik speaking on a number of Islamic topics. When asked by a Hindu questioner why the Muslims were not willing to live under a uniform civil code in India he said he had told his Hindu friends that if they were willing to adopt the Islamic civil code (women wearing hijab) he would join the uniform civil code. When an Iranian asked what he thought of Imam Khomeini’s fatwa against Salman Rushdie he countered why didn’t Imam Khomeini apply the fatwa when the blasphemy had actually occurred; why did he wait for a year? He called the fatwa a piece of mere politics. He praised the Rajiv Gandhi government for banning the book before Pakistan did. He said mixing religion with politics was wrong. When a Hindu asked him whether he thought what the Taliban did to the Bamiyan Buddhas was right, he answered that since there were no Buddhists in Afghanistan and the territory belonged to the Afghans, they were right in destroying their own property. He said if Kaaba was similarly located what could the Muslims do if it was destroyed? He said under Islam images were banned. He gave the example of opium. What if all the opium-takers protested that a country had destroyed large stocks of opium? On 15 November 2003, Dr Zakir Naik made the paradoxical statement that Muslims had lost their mastery of the sciences by turning away from the Quran; the Christians gained mastery of the sciences by turning away from the Bible
