I used to buy them at Ralph's. They carried pinto and black beans.

I later saw them at the 99 Cent store and now I can't find them at all. They

are great.

[veg_grp] Seasoned Instant Refried Beans (product review)

I had no idea this product existed until a couple weeks ago.

While visiting a local farm I purchased a 25 oz.bag of seasoned instant refried

beans.

I was hesitant until I read the ingredients and the only objection might be the

" natural smoke flavor Propylene Glycol.

No trans fat , low in fat and *gently seasoned* with peppers and spices.

They are soooo easy and delicious. This is how I prepared them in my first

experiment.

Instant Refried Beans & Tomatillos

I hulled and chopped 3 Tomatillos and sauteed them in a scant amount of water

for apx. 20 minutes.

Added 1 cup of the seasoned bean mixture, remove from heat, let stand 5 minutes

and serve.

These dehydrated instant beans would be perfect for camping and back packing.

Kids can make them in a minute for tacos, burritos, dips , etc.

The brand name of the one I purchased is *Loco Coyote* packaged and distributed

in Greeley Colorado.

I know that Fantastic Foods makes two types of instant refried beans....one

regular and one black beans. I also love their grain burgers that you mix up

and pan fry. They can be ordered at the FF store.

As I think of it, I don't believe the black beans are the refried type so they

only make one instant version. Sorry for the error.

Here's a site that I've been meaning to try that sells all kinds of

" instant " beans, along with many dehydrated products and TVP, too.

http://www.harmonyhousefoods.com/Dehydrated-Beans_c_2.html

Sounds good with cheap shipping ($7.95 flat rate - Free over $100).

Since it's almost the holiday season, I have no money to spare, but

maybe early next year I'll give them a try and report back.

I just joined the group today, but I'm gonna jump in and say that beprepared.com

has dehydrated refried beans, about $10 for a #10 can. They don't have any

spices, just beans and salt. I like dehydrated beans because I can make them

thick or thin, depending on what I will be using them for.

Glad to be here,

Paige

You can actually make your own instant refried beans quite easily. I use a

friends vitamix because my blender isn't strone enough to gring the beans. I

just put the beans in the vitamix and grind until it is a bean flour and then

put cumin and the other seasonings and a bit of smoke flavor in and stir up.

Then I put it in a jar and keep it it the fridge. I don't know that

refrigerating it is necessary, but I do. When I want refried beans I simply

spoon out as much as I want and add hot water and let it sit for about 5

minutes. The bean flour absorbs the hot water and the tiny particles of bean

are cooked and soft. I couldn't believe it the first time I heard about it, but

I tried and it works.

I just went to their site, and looked around. They sell Potato Starch - what

would you do with that? Is that what you'd use to make mashed potatoes with?

It is used as part of a flour replacement in gluten-free and Kosher-

for-Passover baking.

I've never heard of using it that way.
