Hi All,

Here is a very simple Indian recipe. I have made a few changes to the recipe

to keep it simple.

All the ingredients mentioned here are available in any indian/asian grocery

stores.

MOONG DAL AMTI

-------------------------------

Ingredients :

moong dal - 2 cups (soaked in water overnight)

garlic cloves- 4 finely chopped

mustard seeds - 1tsp

hing(asafoetida)

curry leaves- 5/6

garam masala - 1 tsp or lesser

dry grated coconut powder - 1 tblspn

(if not availble use grated fresh coconut )

cumin powder - 1 tsp

red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp or lesser

brown sugar or refined sugar - 1/2 tsp

fresh lemon juice - 1 tsp

turmeric

salt

Take 2 cups of soaked moong dal in a big pot .

Add 2 glasses of water and 1 tsp salt.Cook covered until the moong is soft and

falling apart.

Heat oil, add garlic , mustard seeds , hing , curry leaves.

fry for 3-4 min or until the mustard seeds sizzle.

add cooked moong dal along with water.

Add garam masala ,  coconut powder , powdered cumin,  red chilli powder,

turmeric

mix well. Add salt and sugar to taste.

Bring it to boil.

Reduce heat and simmer for about 10-15 min covered.

Add water if necessary.

After switching off add lemon juice and fresh coriander leaves(optional)

Moong dal amti on itself tastes great.

It can also be served with rice or roti.

In India , we replace lemon juice with kokum .

Kokum is a sour spice that gives recipes a wondeful taste and color.

To use kokum soak 5 kokum pieces in 1/2 cup warm water for about 15 min

Squeeze and discard the kokum pieces and add the juice to the dal before

bringing it to boil.

This is one of the recipes that wont take lot of time and tastes good.

Enjoy
