Guest guest
Hi all, here some further news and explanation as to what happens next (hopefully) with the cat and dog fur situation and the EU.. I Hope it is o.k. to post this here. Diana " It's Their Destiny " News items on Asian animal abuse 20th November 2006 EU Commission Proposes Dog & Cat Fur Ban Dear Friends We are pleased to be able to report that the EU Commission today confirmed its proposal to ban dog and cat fur. The full statement can be seen at http://europa.eu.int/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/06/1586 & format=HT\ ML & aged=0 & language=EN & guiLanguage=en (Copy and paste the whole link) There may be some confusion however over what happens next so we thought it better to clarify the situation for all those unfamiliar with the EU's somewhat pedantic system. The proposal from the Commission does not become law until it is approved by both the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament. The fact that the Parliament put this to the Commission back in 2003 doesn't count. Both the Council and the Parliament must agree and approve the precise wording. When this has finally been achieved, it becomes a directive to the member states who then have to pass laws at individual state level to comply with it. Enforcement is then the responsibility of each member state. As should now be obvious, these furs won't disappear from our High Street stores overnight, although we are hopeful that the legislation we have all been waiting for won't be too much longer in coming. Meanwhile, please remember that all fur is the product of suffering, whatever the animal it comes from. With Christmas approaching, many people will be tempted to buy " faux " fur items as gifts. Be suspicious of even this fake fur, especially if it's an imported item. Don't forget that it's cheaper to skin a dog or cat than it is to manufacture artificial fur. Without expensive testing it's difficult to know if it is real or fake. The only good " rule of thumb " we have found is the burn test. All animal and human hairs smell pretty much the same when burnt. Just make sure you pull a hair or two off the item before testing, particularly if the seller is watching........ ----------------- http://itstheirdestiny.2kat.net
