Guest guest
I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for over 10 years, and very smugly thinking I am out of the animal cruelty loop. After all, they don't kill the cows to make milk or cheese. Well.....we had a little beef recall here in California a while back, and it had to do with downer dairy cows being slaughtered for beef. And it got me thinking, and I realized they're really not that nice to dairy cows either. I am not totally vegan yet. We are vegan at home. But, when we eat out, we still do cheese. And I don't feel like I can push grandma into not doing cheese. She is an awesome babysitter and has been very respectful of our decision to not give the kids meat. But I don't think she could wrap her brain around 'no animal products' at all. I am glad that I am contributing less to the animal farming business, but I don't do it perfectly. ~ Cindy Mom of 3 boys, ages 5, 3 1/2 and almost

I was not thrilled to have to deal with the egg issue, because I wasn't ready to give up eggs--even though, vegan issue aside, I'm allergic to them! I wanted to believe the " cage free " propaganda. That darn Debra pointed out that what I wanted to believe, wasn't true! LOL! Sorry, Debra, but you ruined my egg buying forever! Cheese is another holdout issue for us. I use some vegan cheese here, and a shredded cheese that's soy based but has casein. It's a compromise for now, because it's so easy to cook with, but it's not really what I want. I wish Tofutti would go back to making their shredded cheese! For me, I will have to compromise on some of these things, due to dh not being on the same page as me with regards to food. He's willing to cut back, but definitely not ready to eliminate. I wanted to sit him down last night and tell him that I could no longer buy or cook meat, but I was still such an emotional wreck about those videos, and my soy ice cream, I never got the chance. I will still buy his organic creamer and milk, butter, eggs, and the partly-soy cheese. I'm not thrilled, but if I don't do that, he might start buying even less desirable items (like the cheap non-organic versions). I'd rather buy the less cruel products myself. But meat--how am I ever going to tell him this now? *sigh* I wish I could just go back to being ignorant. Marilyn **************Psssst...Have you heard the news?
