Guest guest
I am going backpacking for 5 days and I can't possibly carry enough water. A backpacker recommended water purification tablets to use for the stream water. She said it contains iodine. So what do you guys think of that? If that's no good then what other option would I have? Guest guest
Drink water from the river as upstream as possible, in as deep water as possible, and where the river is reasonably fast flowing. This will ensure clean water, with no animal effluent. I used to hike alot back in scotland, and you will find that the water tastes better than the stuff out of the taps. stephen rawfood , " minnie9090 " <minnie9090 wrote: > > I am going backpacking for 5 days and I can't possibly carry enough > water. Guest guest
I read somewhere that oil of oregano purifies water. You might want to look into that. Talk is cheap. Use Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1¢/min.

Guest guest
You can get iodine-free water purifying tablets if you're worried about the iodine. Ask at a knowledgable shop and look up the ingredients on google if you want to find out more. It's worth having some even if you don't intend to use them, for emergencies. The old fashioned way of making stream water safe to drink is to boil it first, this kills any nasty parasites and bugs that may be in the water. If you're out in the wilderness, personally I would use the tablets too. Even if you are taking in a minimal amount of some non-ideal substance, you're taking in so much less in the way of environmental pollution that it's still better than drinking mineral water while living in the city.... --- minnie9090 <minnie9090 wrote: > I am going backpacking for 5 days and I can't > possibly carry enough > water. Guest guest
You might want to research Grapefruit Seed Extract. I keep it in the house in liquid and tablet forms for travel and medicinal uses. Of course, now you can't travel on airplanes with the liquid, but the tablets can always be ground up and dissolved in water. Katadyn or sweetwater. No tablets. Tablets are not micro-organism filtering capable and in my opinion, not as reliable. REI or any back-packing store sells filtering systems. The people arranging the trip ought to know about this. Melanie
Guest guest
We have a dandy outdoor store in Seattle and it's been here since 1932. Try this and see if anything on this page will help. I think a filtration system would make more sense than iodine pills or any sort of pill. http://snipurl.com/us5i Shari
Guest guest
Minnie, If you haven't left yet: Go to a camping store and find a small filter. They use a similar process to the filters that you put on your sink but without the carbon mess. They are light and guaranteed to filter a certain number of gallons. You can decide how many you need. I used to spend a lot of time in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (months) and this is all that I ever used. Remember that you are starting with fresh, pure water. Hubby has done a lot of hiking in the Rockies and not filtered water until he got closer to civilization. You will have a sense of how concerned you should be when you see your water source. I just filter it as a precaution. There is nothing worse than being miles from civilization and getting sick from the water. I also have carried Pepto tablets as a precaution but never needed them. Have fun!
