The sea salt in the water creates a liquid with same approximate weight as blood. It goes through the body without leaving any salt because it is the same weight as blood. At the same time it has the effect of washing out the colon. Burroughs does say that, if you cannot do the salt water, you can do an herbal laxative morning and night. I don't like the feeling with laxatives, and I dont' like the lack of control -- there is no way to predict when it is finally going to work, and then when it does, you have to RUN.
