Guest guest
I know this sounds crazy....but here is one thing you can do. Build a GOOD scarecrow! But...make it human like. Stuff a shirt and pants and put shoes on it, put him or her in a lawn chair so they dont fall over, make a head out of a stuffed bag and put a baseball cap or big floppy hat on it, then sun glasses, gloves for hands. You can use whatever you have handy in the back of a closet so it wont cost ya too much at all. Animals that approach a garden, do so from a far at first...they look, if they see what appears to be a human, they will be more leary to approach. And move it around from time to time so it looks different to the animals. I also have used an old cheap transister type radio of some kind and put it in the garden and leave it playing on a talk radio station to make it sound like the " people " in the garden are talking to one another... You can also...go around the outside of your garden with thorny type plants like rose bushes...roses like to grow up against fences but there are other kinds of bushes that grow thick then all you have to worry about is the ones that burrow. As far as burrowing animals....the only solution we could come up with was one that took some work and is more permanent to the landscape and that was to dig a trench about 2-3 feet deep but only a few inches wide around the garden and fill it in with cement.......but you gotta get deep to thwart diggers...so that is a pesky problem to say the least and some work to dig it all...we used a trench digger that we borrowed from a friend...it works, but once you put it in, its in...so if you are renting...then I guess you better ask first...LOL!!!! But I have found with squirls that they also dont like the big plastic owls that you see people putting on roofs and in gardens...they do help with most birds as well! I had the most luck when I started making human scarecrows....we had three of them in our garden and it got fun to dress them and do silly things with them...but that was mostly after drinking too much wine all day..LOL!!!! Maybe someone else can give some tips as well...... Good Luck.... Allegra <useyourthorns wrote: Hello, I've gotta get my blender from my mum's. Well I don't own, but am able to use the garden if I wish. I live in the middle of 40 acres of woods, so I get about every kind of pest you can think of. There is a very good fence around the garden that keeps the rabbits out, but the groundhogs just dig under it, and the squirels climb over it. They eat EVERYTHING. (Well they don't manage to defeat the red raspberries! But those SCARE me.) There is a pear tree in the garden too, so putting a cover over it is unlikely. (Like chicken mesh, thats what I did with my old garden. The black plastic stuff.) Mail Bring photos to life! New PhotoMail makes sharing a breeze.
