Help To Choose A Dehydrator?!

Hi Raw Foodies!

HELP! Too many choices! I'm a newbie to raw living and would love

advice from experienced dehydrator users! I'd like room to grow into

the dehydrator as I gain culinary experience with the basics like

yogurt, fruits, veggies and with recipes such as crackers, chips etc.

How many watts do I need?

How many trays is best?

Which brand and model to you recommend?

I've noticed 'Excalibur' dominates the market... what about 'Nesco'?

Many thanks so much for sharing your experience!

Warmly, Lisa

Good morning!

I have a Harvest Savor that I bought from VitaMix years ago and it does

me just fine. They don't make it any more, however. I was looking at

the Excalibur when I first started eating raw but I quickly found out

that I didn't need it. I hardly ever use the one I have. I like fruit

and veggies better just as they are. When I'm going to make a fancy

recipe for a special occasion, I can use what I have. Since you don't

have a dehydrator, that isn't a whole lot of help but my advice would

be this: don't buy more than you will use. The wattage doesn't matter

as much as how low it will go. I believe that mine has a top

temperature of 108 degrees. Any higher than that and your food is in

danger of not being raw. There is some debate if any dehydrated food IS

raw. A lot of the nutrition is lost with the moisture. As you progress

to more and more optimal raw eating, you will lose your taste for

dehydrated foods. The Nesco is definitely less expensive than the

Excalibur. It also allows temperatures down to 90 degrees. The

Excalibur goes to 85 degrees but I doubt you would ever use anything

under 105-108 so that isn't a real selling point.

Let us know what you decide! I'd like a review of whatever you get. :)

I love my Nesco, I have the garden master dehydrator with the mesh

screens and the fruit roll up sheets. It does a very nice job and was

half the price of the Excalibur. Now, with that said you have to get

creative with the Nesco to do some of the fancy dehydrated recipies

that are out there. I am going to butcher one of my trays to create an

extra layer of height in my dehydrator so I can do taller stuff. If I

want to do pesto stuffed mushrooms I have to have little mushrooms as

the big ones are too tall for the dehydrator!

Taevia,

You have gotten me to thinking about stuffed mushrooms! I have some

baby 'bellas stuffed with spinach pesto in my dehydrator! One quick

tip--if you want to make some of the " un-meatloaf " , etc., you can

cover the tray with an upside down bowl.

Gotta go!
