Guest guest
Hi Folks, Many people had many different questions about the RAW FOODS jobs that I posted earlier, so I thought that I would try to answer them all for everyone in one email. The best thing about working at the Ann Wigmore Institute is that you have a full immersion into a Raw Food community while living at a beautiful warm sunny beach. This Institute is more remote than some of the busier Dr. Ann institutes which may be next door to fast food restaurants and the like. It is located in a small residential neighborhood with maybe ten other houses and apartments on 100 yard residential street that ends in the sand of the beach. There is no through traffic. On the main road that this street comes off of, there is one road side stands that sell Juice Ice Frappes to local beach tourists. There are a few more businesses within a ten minute walk including a pharmacy, but everything else is just normal family houses and fields. Most people at the institute enjoy the sense of enclosure, never having to leave our safe little community. A Typical Day Many staff and students begin their day with optional sunrise yoga at the Yoga Pavilion overlooking the beach. When yoga is finished they head to the Wheatgrass area for the morning wheatgrass at 7:30 am and then get ready for their day. Breakfast at 8:30am always has energy soup for those who are staying strictly green, as well as other tasty treats, like fresh local papaya halves covered with blueberries and almond cream, or sesame milk mango smoothie. At 9am, our office staff opens the office and begins the typical work of arranging student reservations or managing the premises while the students begin their classes which are also open to the staff. The classes include sprouting, composting, food combining, colon care, raw skin and body care, about forty different classes altogether. The Greenhouse is busy soaking, sprouting, and planting all of the buckwheat, wheatgrass, adzuki, barley and others that will be used for our daily greens, as the harvesting staff is busy cutting, washing and drying greens for the kitchen. At 10:30am a light snack is served such as baby coconut water or fresh fruit. Fresh energy soup is always available. Lunch is served at 12:30 and this is the biggest meal of the day. Our kitchen carefully plans a large spread with perfect food combination rules followed. Large salads with raw dressings, dehydrated stuff vegetables, seed cheeses, etc, and as always plenty of fresh energy soup for those looking for purity. The early afternoon is usually kept open for the students to enjoy the warm sunny beaches whether swimming or long walks looking for freshly sprouted coconuts (yum). Some students even rent horses from locals for horseback rides on the beach. Another lite afternoon raw snack is served at 2:30pm. Classes resume at 4pm, with dinner served at 5:30pm. The office closes and the staff enjoys a leisurely meal as the sun sets over this beautiful place. Evening classes are usually devoted to inner healing, such as meditation, inner-child work, communication, positive thought, 12 step Raw Program. Staff are encouraged to participate. After the evening class, many use this quieter time to work on their colon cleansing while other choose to socialize in the common rooms. Quiet time begins at 10 pm so that we can get up early in the am again for yoga at sunrise. Accommodations Apartments within a two minute walk of the institute are usually in the $400 to $600 range for one bedroom beach front ocean apartments for long term stays. There is also discount staff housing available at the institute but this is dependent upon availability. For those relocating here from the states, the office can help with info on housing within the immediate area. Some people choose to share larger apartments with other staff members. Almost all staff from the states find long term accommodations within a hundred yards of the institute. Others, like myself, choose to live in the more rural hillside just a few minutes drive from the institute. Staff Diversity About half of the staff is from the states who are just to work at the institute. Many of them originally came down to do the two week certification program and decided that they wanted to devote themselves completely to their healing process by taking jobs and residences at the institute. We have many international visitors, so foreign languages are pretty common. The other half of the staff is comprised of local people who love the institute and are dedicated to a more natural way of life. They are very helpful in giving you personal inroads to the Puerto Rican culture that surrounds the institute. I am continually impressed with how helpful, loving and generous they are to those who have traveled so far. Some were friends with Dr. Ann personally and are part of the reason she stayed here so much to do her writing and teaching. Jobs Human Resources Coordinator Bookkeeper Manager Reservations Promotions Computer Systems Maintenance Facility Maintenance Development Coordinator Kitchen Coordinator Living foods Chef Office Supervisor Why are there so many jobs listed? Most people come down to spend a year or so healing and then go back to the " real world " so there is usually just a pre-understood rate of turn over. I like the fluidity that allows people to come and go as the seasons take them. It is much more relaxed in that respect than any other place that I have worked Pay Pay is low but expenses are pretty small as well. Prices are typically half of what they are in the states. First run movies are $3.50 to $5.00, where as in the states they are $7 to $10. By living entirely within the community and getting all of your food from the kitchen with five meals and snacks per day, plus 24 hour energy soup, you can keep your expenses pretty low. Healing I guess that this is best for people who really want to unplug from their toxic life and live and work in a state of purity and healing. I hope that this helps everyone who had questions. Guest guest
Thanks for elaborating with your second post about these raw jobs! I have a question regarding what you said about how easily the turnover of job positions flow over the seasons and years (I erased most of your post in this reply to save kilobytes): With awareness of the raw food lifestyle increasing exponentially into the near future, do you expect more difficulty in say, 2 years from now, being able to take up on this opportunity? The reason I ask is because I'm still working on my A.S. degree here in S. California, and I want to have at least that goal met in my life before I just drop everything and go do what I dream of doing for life (I'm 31 and already took a long break- 6 years - in life by moving to Florida for similar health-oriented goals). Thanks, Tiffany Tom Spontelli <outreach wrote: Hi Folks, Many people had many different questions about the RAW FOODS jobs that I posted earlier, so I thought that I would try to answer them all for everyone in one email...
