Hi everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself since I just joined this list. I've

been

'raw curious' for about a year now. I discovered it when hunting for a

better diet for my parrots. At first I dismissed it as being to

radical.. vegan? raw? nahhh.. I'd miss too many things I could never do

that. Oddly enough I've been moving towards a vegitarian diet over the

last few years naturally, nothing I was doing on purpose, just drifting

in that direction. I bumped into raw again about three weeks ago and

jumped in feet first. I've been eating raw for two weeks now and I love

it. I feel like a lone person over here in Kentucky though, so I've

been reaching out to others via forums, websites, and now this list.

I'm 31 years old and married. Fortunately my husband is of the mind

set, " If it makes you happy, go for it " , so I don't have any problems

there. My mom is somewhat curious and my father thinks I'm a loon *lol*

but is keeping it to himself. I don't have any kids, but I have my four

parrots and a canary to keep me busy instead! I also work as a manager

at a bank, very interesting job that I do enjoy. Only bad part is that

I need to commute an hour into Louisville to get there. It's worth it

though! I also do parrot grooming and some behavioral consultation for

parrots on weekends. I enjoy reading, computers, Sifi/fantasy

roleplaying, and ocassionally sewing. That's me in a nutshell, I look

forward to getting to know everyone better and learning more about

eating raw.

Have a great day!

Hello Taevia,

Just wanted to welcome you to the group, and to raw foods. I think it's cool

how you have been naturally moving in this direction, rather than " forcing "

yourself into it. It was that way with me, too. I had already been vegetarian

for many years, then about 5 years ago decided to go vegan. Various health

problems led to to the discovery that I was gluten-intolerant, and after

eliminating gluten from my diet my health greatly improved. It was through

investigating gluten intolerance on the Internet that I came across the raw

foods lifestyle. It had never occurred to me before, but when I read about it I

was very intrigued. I found myself just naturally wanting to add more and more

raw foods to my diet. That was about 4 years ago, and I am now eating about

80-90% raw daily. I love the food I eat! I never feel deprived, in fact I feel

sorry for SAD eaters. They don't know what they're missing!

That's cool that you have so many parrots. My husband and I have a parrot, a

26-year-old Elinora cockatoo. What kind of parrots do you have? I wish our bird

would eat more raw food, but alas, he was hand raised on cooked food, and that's

what he prefers. I still always offer him some of whatever I'm eating (except

avocados, which can kill a parrot, even in small quantities), and he does

sometimes nibble. We also have a cat, which makes for lots of " interesting "

situations :) My cat is actually more afraid of the bird than the other way

around! I don't blame him, I've been bitten a few times by that beak, and it

sure hurts (and bleeds alot).

Nice to meet you,

Christine

Thank you for the welcome Christine!

It has been an interesting journey to this point. I never thought I'd

go vegetarian, but when I told my mom that she said 'I'm not surprised,

your the only kid I knew who would eat all of her veggies and want

more'. Huh.. didn't know that. Wish I had remembered that throughout

life, might have saved me some problems!

I have a blue and gold macaw, a severe macaw, congo african grey, and

a red meyers. My guys are all rather young, the oldest is turning six

this year, so I'm having alot of luck with turning them to raw. I've

done about 90% raw for them over the last week and I'm seeing changes

in their behavior. They all have more energy and my two problem

children, my severe prefers my husband over me and my grey prefers me

over my husband, are behaving better and stepping up with no issues

for the non preferred person. May be coincidence as I've been working

with them on their problems for a while, but it just seems odd that

they both turn around on the same week a few days after I start this.

But, no matter what caused it I'm not arguing. And yes, cockatoo bites

are the absolute worst of the parrots. I'd much rather be bitten by a

macaw any-day!

Have a good one!
