Guest guest
I would greatly appreciate any advice from veteran raw foodists. A few months ago, I became enamoured with the idea of going raw, since indeed my life as a 34 year old living in suburban LA, my health problems have steadily been increasing, particularly now with chronic asthma, allergies (animal and dust, and some food). For the past while I have been a heavy meat/protein eater, which seems to be very good for my energy level and physique - I am relatively thin and with good muscle mass. Basically going raw was my reaction to wanting to get rid of my health issues, and to live in longevity without adult aging diseases. I tried two experiments, both of which lasted about 3 weeks. For the first, I went totally raw but ate a great deal of raw fish and raw cheese. This was great for me and I had quite a good amount of energy. In fact, my asthma improved and I had to take only about 1/2 the amount of asthma medication. Then, I took a hiatus of about a month, and tried an all-vegan raw diet. This for me was very difficult. I was constantly hungry, even though I ate the nuts, hemp protein, bee pollen etc.. Despite my hunger, I gained about 11 pounds, and I had to start taking the full strength of asthma meds. Whereas my weight was fairly normal before, and I had certainly not been underweight, the 11 pound gain was very disconcerting. I attributed it to all the fruits and higher carbs I was ingesting. Much of the recipes I got from " Raw Food, Real World " . But all in all, it was discouraging because it was not sustainable to me -- I was constantly fatigued, hungry, and in addition, I was getting fat! I have now gone back to a semi-raw diet which includes very little fruit, but more vegetables, and raw fish. My asthma is still where it was (ie/ not half, as with the protein-raw diet), and I am losing all the weight I gained. Because I am trying very hard to " do the right thing " for my body, I welcome any insight from any of you who have had similar results, and how you managed to overcome them.
