Dr. Cousens has published many articles in health journals and popular magazines in the areas of biochemistry, school health, clinical pharmacology, hypoglycemia and Alzheimer' disease. A graduate of Amherst College, where he was captain of an undefeated football team, Dr. Cousens was selected as an All New England lineman and one of eleven National Scholar Athletes inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame. He received his M.D. degree from Columbia Medical School in 1969 and completed his psychiatric residency in 1973. Dr. Cousens is listed in the Who?s Who in California, the Who?s Who Among Top Executives, the Who?s Who in Executives and Professionals, the International Who?s Who of Entrepreneurs, Strathmore?s Who?s Who, and is a former member of the Board of Trustees of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA). Since 1965, Dr. Cousens has been involved in humanitarian projects. For several years in the mid-60?s, he worked with Afro-American teen gangs on the South Side of Chicago. For three years, he lived and worked in Central Harlem, while attending Columbia Medical School. In his second year in medical school, as the head of the regional student health organization, he organized doctors and medical students from the nine different medical schools in the region to set up an evening clinic at PS 175, a grammar school located one block from Harlem Hospital. They examined over 500 children in one week, and after analyzing the results, he developed a training program for community mothers, with funding from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. This program was so successful that it spread to over half the schools in Central Harlem. By the time Dr. Cousens graduated from Columbia, the program became adopted and financed by the New York Health Department. While in New York, Dr. Cousens also developed a sickle-cell screening program with the PS 175 grammar school in Central Harlem. The results of this program were also followed through by the New York Department of Health. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Cousens received an appointment at the National Institute of Mental Health in community psychiatry. He also received a commission as a lieutenant commander in the Public Health Service where he served for three years. During his medical internship, Dr. Cousens developed several community programs in San Francisco supporting socio-cultural peace. When he moved to Boston to complete his psychiatric residency, he developed a teen center for white, working-class teenagers providing family therapy and teen counseling as well as social activities. After his residency, he moved to Petaluma, California, where he became a consultant for the California State Department of Mental Health. He also became the chief mental health consultant for Sonoma County Head Start programs, which ranged over an area of almost 300 miles. During this time, he worked with white, working-class parents and Pomo Native American parents and teachers in developing a Head Start Program, which included teaching family dynamics to the Head Start teachers and developing an innovative lead-screening program. Over a period of several years, Dr. Cousens established the Petaluma People?s Services Center, which is a community-controlled network that provides social services for all of Sonoma County. It involved organizing over 40 agencies, plus developing new programs and networking to serve the elderly, a child-abuse hotline, and parent crisis hotlines. This center is still operating 25 years later and has been successful in its endeavors. It has become a significant social service agency in southern Sonoma County. In 1992, Dr. Cousens founded the Essene Order of Light, a non-profit humanitarian service and educational organization dedicated to the healing and transformation of the planet. In 1994, Dr. Cousens developed the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Patagonia, AZ and continues to act as director. The Tree of Life is a multi-cultural, spiritual, eco-retreat center for rejuvenation of body, mind and spirit. In 2002 the Tree of Life Foundation was created which encompassed all of these organizations under one non-profit 501 c (3) umbrella. Currently, the focus of Dr. Cousens? humanitarian work is creating world peace on all levels. He has been leading peace meditations around the world since 1985. He has established a Peace 21 meditation where as many as 2,000 people have come together at one time to meditate for peace four times per year on each equinox and solstice. In 1996, while in Patagonia, he established this quarterly peace meditation at the United Nations in New York where he regularly goes to lead this meditation for world peace. This is all part of an overall process to create peace and healing of the planet on the physical, mental and spiritual levels. In 2003 he initiated the worldwide ?Peace Everyday Initiative? to encourage all traditions to work for peace. He has been working with Rabbi Zalman Schachter- Shalomi, the grandfather of the Jewish Renewal Movement. The Dalai Lama has given his blessings to the project. Dr. Cousens works daily on an individual level with people who are seeking to consciously cultivate peace in their own lives and within their families and communities. In this context, as part of his work with a Lakota Sioux Chief with whom he has Sundanced, Dr. Cousens has created the framework for a program to assist Native Americans in healing from diabetes. This is a program that will eventually benefit all indigenous groups whose health has degenerated because of not following their traditional, healthy diet. The world literature clearly shows that diabetes becomes epidemic within twenty years after eating a diet of fast food, junk food, and large amounts of white sugar and white flour. With the holistic techniques that Dr. Cousens has developed, people are able to heal from adult-onset diabetes in as short a time as two weeks. This natural healing technology is simple and highly effective. By returning people to indigenous diets, and with the help of certain nutrients, a great service is being provided. The Tree of Life Foundation has also created the idea of building holistic orphanages and eco-villages for 200 children, developing a garden-centered school with a holistic health component. The larger plan is to extend these holistic orphanages and schools throughout the world. The mayor of Sao Paulo, Brazil and sites in Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Egypt, Israel, and South Africa are interested. A complete program has been developed, but is waiting for the Tree of Life Foundation in Patagonia to reach its next level of operation before this can manifest. At the July, 1999 Native American Sundance, Dr. Cousens had the vision of the possibility of feeding the hungry children of the world. Using technologies that are being incorporated at the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center, such as EM (Effective Microorganisms), low water, and dilute salt-water technologies; agriculture production can be increased from two to ten times. With these agricultural technologies, and using the holistic orphanages and other EM-based farms as food production sites, enough food can be produced to feed the children in every region where these programs are implemented. Dr. Cousens looks forward to the long process of establishing these programs on a national and international basis. After the four-year Sundance commitment, he was adopted into the Lakota Sioux Nation. Presently, the Tree of Life Foundation, in conjunction with his Native American brothers and sisters, is sponsoring a multi-tribal, multi-cultural White Buffalo Spirit Dance for the healing and transformation of the planet. At the first dance in 2002, people from many Third World tribes in Mexico, Native Americans in the U.S., people from all states in the U.S. and Europe participated in this eight-day world peace event. Gabriel has now established a White Buffalo Spirit Dance at the Tree of Life as an outgrowth of the earlier Spirit Dance. Since being initiated as a Rabbi in 2001 by Rabbi Gershon Winkler, Gabriel?s peace and spiritual teachings have taken him to Israel where he has become a popular teacher. Part of his humanitarian mission is to support the peace process in the Middle East. Dr. Cousens has committed his life to world service and to establishing these fledgling programs on an international basis so that he, and everyone who chooses to help, can participate in the healing and transformation of the planet.
