Metabolisms are different enough between people that there are no generalities. Gabriel Cousens gets quite involved with this point in his book, 'Conscious Eating.' He goes into different metabolic types. For some people fruits are acidic, and for other people they are alkaline. A lot of it has to do with how one processes sugar. (fast or slow oxidizers) Greens are usually a safe bet for an alkaline food. However, the only way to know is to test your pH. It is really quite easy to do. The easiest method I have seen is to use pH strips in the morning for urine. Ideally you want a pH that is about 6.5-6.8 for urine. You want a slightly acidic urine pH (especially females), because infections can grow in an alkaline urethra. (different tissues have different pH requirements) You can also take pH readings during several times of the day and average them out, but I think that the morning urine pH is the simplest and easiest method. Never believe that something is making you more alkaline/acidic until you test the results yourself. Also, understand that it is tissue pH that we are talking about. Blood pH never changes much (from 7.34). If it did, you would die. pH is a very good thing to measure. Most enzymes and hormones don't work very well in the wrong pH. Insulin is an example. Many Diabetics and obese people resbond exceedingly well to balancing their tissue pH because they get they can get their insulin levels back in balance. If any of you guys want more information or more specific help on balancing your tissue pH, check out the website cocoonnutrition.com I spent about 2.5 years figuring out this problem. I tried dozens of different dietary approaches and supplements until I found the right balance for myself.
