Cleansing and the term " detox "

Thanks, Elchanan, for the essay on cleansing. I've actually heard people

say that they *want* to make diet and lifestyle improvements, but they fear

" detox " . I find that once people have a proper understanding of cleansing,

there is more acceptance and less fear of the sometimes unpleasant reality

of cleansing symptoms.

An important thing to remember is that the body doesn't have too many

options available to it besides elimination, and those other options can

present far more bothersome consequences than the symptoms of cleansing that

result from dietary improvement. It's like cleaning out your house -- you

have to either get rid of your junk, store it, or keep stepping over it. If

you don't get rid of it now, you'll always have it to deal with later. When

people seem to 'get away' with eating and living unhealthfully, they're

really only postponing their suffering. Personally, I'd rather have my

suffering now in the form of low energy or a runny nose rather than later in

the form of dementia, colostomy bags and assisted living.

Thanks again for helping to elucidate this important concept.

I agree, Nora, I'd much prefer to " take my lumps " now and get on with life.

I do wish to clarify one point: When I say " symptoms, " I mean all forms of

communication from the subconscious through the body. For example, dryness

in the back of the throat is the " symptom " that indicates thirst. Soreness

in the throat communicates " don't eat. " Nervousness may indicate " breathe,

center yourself before going forward. "

People often speak and write about " listening to our bodies. " I

wholeheartedly to this notion, but with one huge caveat: in the

course of our " education " and " socialization, " most of us have become so

disconnected from our own body-awareness, we don't even recognize messages,

much less have any idea how to interpret them. So I believe this is

something we all need to relearn, at least to some degree, and I devote some

considerable attention to this in talking privately with people. It's a real

eye-opener, and SO simple and straightforward! And it's fun!!!

Just for clarity,

Elchanan
