Guest guest
http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/iron.htm Good ammunition for those of use whose doctors are meat pushers. This stood out when I was reading it: " For example, you would have to eat more than 1700 calories of sirloin steak to get the same amount of iron as found in 100 calories of spinach. " Not to mention that the 1700 calories of steak is rather higher than my weekly grocery budget. 12 ounces lean and fat is 675 calories. Multiply that by two and we get 24 oz lean and fat steak for 1350 calories. Add on another 5 ounce lean only steak and we come to the 1700 calories. Now add up the cost. Don't know about your part of the world, but in Albany, Georgia, a porterhouse is over 10 a pound and that 1700 calories was 29 ounces of meat, or darn near 2 pounds or 20 bucks. I can buy a LOT of beans, legumes and brown rice for that. Let's see, the fresh spinach I bought last week was about 3 bucks for a 5 pound bag. That fed us an entire week. Whole lot cheaper than meat. (better too, IMO.) 5 pounds of broccoli was a bit over 3 bucks and that lasts us two weeks. http://www.annecollins.com/calories/calories-steak.htm Gak, even thinking of chomping that down dead, decaying cow meat makes my toenails curl and stomach churn. Blech, catch you guys later, I am off to make bread bowls for tonight's chili.
