Guest guest
We do have central air, but use it maybe 2-3x a year. We've only had it for 2 years. Otherwise we use fans. We are blessed (cursed?) with huge, mature, WALNUT trees, which makes our plant choices fairly limited. But we would never consider cutting down this natural airconditioning. They are the last to leaf out, messy when they flower, messy when they drop nuts (already starting and its only mid July) and first to drop leaves. But they shade the house wonderfully. We just have to be extra careful what we plant under them, and where we plant the tomatoes (walnuts are the kiss of death for tomatoes) and do what we can to be sure none of the endless parade of kids through my yard gets bonked by a falling nut. Oh well, we can plant all the tomatoes we want at the landscape nursery (we have an extra 20 or so acres), but then I have to resign myself to spending my Saturday or Sunday morning 'at work', weeding and mulching. Much more fun at home, but needs must, as my Finnish grandma would have said. AmyF
